  • Report: iPhone OS 4.0 to Support Multitasking

AppleInsider is quoting "people with a proven track record in predicting Apple's technological advances" as saying that the next major release of the iPhone OS will support multitasking: the holy grail of many enthusiasts. The informants - who asked that the details remain secret as development on the new OS has "a way to go" - say there will be new "multi-tasking manager" software as part of iPhone 4.0, and that the main obstacles to multitasking up until now have been battery life and security.

The iPhone OS is based on the same Mach microkernel that is at the heart of Mac OS X, and so is already capable of multitasking. Apple enabled this for certain native apps - such as iPod and Messages - so that you can get SMS notifications and play music while doing other things. Up until now, the sources say, the main reason Apple has avoided allowing third-party apps to run in the background is to pre-emptively prohibit any spyware or malicious code from being run on the iPhone. Secondary reasons include resource management and battery life. So what might have changed to allow Apple to reconsider?

Probably the most significant development is Apple's new A4. The energy efficient system-on-a-chip, reportedly allowing ten hours of video playback, will power the iPad and is widely rumored as the heart of the next generation iPhone. This could render concerns about battery life moot, at least on newer devices, and Apple may use this as an inducement to owners of current iPhones to get an upgrade. That's total speculation, but it sure sounds like a classic Apple move. The iPad, of course, would be able to take full advantage of multitasking, and Apple doubtlessly has considered user disappointment when they discover they can only do one thing at a time on the new device.

The iPhone user interface would obviously have to be redesigned to allow users to take advantage of multitasking. It could be something like a ProSwitcher-style "double-push" of the Home button… or maybe this is the use for the mysterious "triple tap" that's been found in the3.2 beta release of the iPhone SDK. It will be interesting to see how Apple implements it… and how it can be hacked to work better.

^^ No matter what, people will ***** and moan. They could literally make it so it dual booted a full blown install of OS X and iPhone OS, put an AMOLED, the kitchen sink- you guys get the picture. Honestly, multitasking isn't for everyone. I can only imagine that a small user base actually would use it for more than just showing off. I use music controls on a daily basis, so I would like to see this feature. But the guys at work really don't. Know what I'm sayin'?

I love OS *.0 rumors as much as the next cat, but it has gotten to the point where the same rumors are being cycled over and over with the only thing changing being the firmware revision.

Multitasking, MMS (mine still doesn't work), Front facing cam, Flash, etc. All just old rumors.

iPhone OS 4.0 will be quicker (obviously), hopefully it will have some degree of multitasking, but don't hold your breathe. Flash? Heck no.

iPhone 4G will likely not have a front facing cam. Though I imagine a better cam for video will be in it. Also hopefully a better battery. But this all literally remains to be seen. I suppose I'll just set my bookmark to the forums rather than the front page until after the announcement.

It has multitasking if you add Proswitcher and Backgrounder from Cydia. I have been using it for awhile now without any problems. And have not really noticed any change in battery life.

jailbreak and get multitasking if it is such a necessity.

i'm thinking of a Adam Sandler line. Something like "b-b-b-b-********!!" Don't see this happening. As others have said in post above me, Apple doesn't give us what we want half the time and these rumors are just being recycled. My prediction, the new iphone will look exactly like a 3G/3GS with a metal back perhaps in style of the 2G, 4.5 mp camera w/o flash, no flash player support, probably wont have an OLED screen, and wont have a front facing camera, and i highly doubt we will get multitasking support due to lack of battery life as others have said as well. All I know is that it better be a much better update than what i'm expecting or i am going to HTC and give my $200 a month to someone other than AT&T.

Apple will now copy everything us jailbreakers do, so everyone can enjoy the benefits. They are hypocrites...

And enough with the Pandora reason for multi-tasking! Everyone knows that Slacker Radio kills Pandora!

I'd bet thats its gonna be a sh*t interface that will be NOTHING compared to multifl0w. Apple will scale it down to the extent of making us all miserable, just like they never used flash. They dont want us getting into Jailbreaking so they (apple) are probably gonna fix every exploit so (Geohot, Dev-Team) are gonna have a sh*t time with OS 4.0. I'll stick with Jailbroken 3.1.3, thank you crapple.

The speculators have said "the next version will support multitasking...." forever now. They have been crying wolf now for awhile.
I will believe it when I see it. Even if apple does release backgrounder it will still be watered down and not even come close to what we have all become accustomed to with jailbroken phones.

Triple click has been present since iPhone OS 3.0

That's how you access the accessibility features (page zoom and text-to-speech) for the less fortunate iPxxx users out there.

Isn't a bigger battery one of the main reasons the iPad can do 10 hours of video? If it had the same sized battery as the iPhone, then I would be impressed.

Quite frankly I dont care what-so-ever. I mean I am perfectly with backgrounder+proswitcher. I dont see how they can make it better, infact I wouldnt be surprised if proswitcher was actually BETTER than apples multitasking support

Nice! A nice feature that will kill my battery life unless Apple makes a better battery life for the next generation of the iPhone.
