  • Steve Jobs Talks iPad Tethering

Reports have surfaced from the Swedish website Slashat.se that a question was emailed to Apple all the way from Sweden that posed a simple question: Can the WiFi-only iPad be tethered to the iPhone?

    "No."

Apparently, that one-word email response came directly from Steve Jobs himself via his iPhone.

Since the iPad's announcement, many iPhone owners have curiously pondered the prospect of this functionality being available. And while there will be plenty of modders and jailbreakers tackling this "problem" in due time, it seems that, at least in an official capacity, we can't tether our iPhones to the iPad. Had Apple made other arrangements, it would have been an overwhelming unexpected announcement, to say the least.

Still, a lot of Apple fans are peculiarly exhibiting a great deal of frustration with this situation - even though virtually everyone expected iPhone-to-iPad tethering to not work. Nonetheless, Steve Jobs one-word reply has rubbed many the wrong way this weekend.

Yesterday, Apple announced that iPad will be available April 3rd. 3G models, however, won't be rolled out until late April, when global availability will similarly set in.

It's like this. Their product, their choice. If I don't like it, I'll get something else. Why do people love to moan about something they'll never consider buying anyway? I won't be getting it. BTW, can anyone tell me if any of the other e-readers have wifi or 3G or tethering?

Don't worry guys. $60+tax per month is just fine by Apple standards.

Where do you think Steve Jobs is going to get the cash to pad his bed?

Ok, I like Apple stuff, but I really don't like Steve Jobs (more correctly, he disgusts me). He comes across as arrogant and self-centered, and someone who thinks he can control the universe.

As much as I don't like Windows (although 7 isn't bad), here we have Bill Gates using his time and money to help people in need, to make the world a better place, and Steve Jobs who's a complete self-centered idiot.

I'm thinking Steve maybe should get sick again, to see what's really important in the world, and allow someone else to take over Apple, someone a little more humble, who will make the company better.

like said before... MyWi will let you tether since the ipad will detect the internet from the iphone as a wifi signal and not as a tethered internet via cable or bluetooth...

my thoughts exactly!!! I mean that's what i was gonna do anyway if I were to get an Ipad. Why pay more for a 3G ipad when you can just thether from your iphone if you have one.

Jobs is answering this question from an "official" standpoint. Of course it's not SUPPOSED to b/c that would defeat the whole purpose of the 3G version for those people that own iPhones. If it can connect to a WIFI network and the iPhone can turn itself into a WIFI hotspot via MyWi then it should connect no problem. Now as far as software for bluetooth tethering that wont be supported. Also there would be no such thing as "USB" tethering b/c you'd be connecting from a 30 pin to a 30 pin connector (which I don't think exixt) and this is a totally diff kind of interface. Bottom line.. MyWi should do the trick.

same WAY if i pick my iphone wifi and put my key WHY IN THE WORLD i can't connect to it

      I am sure I will

Apple doesn't officially allow tethering over WiFi as it is right now. You can tether the iPhone over USB or BT as far as I know. Sooooo what makes you think they would change this if the iPad comes out? Of course Jobs is going to say no, because tethering over WiFi is not officially supported.

You cannot complain about a one word answer if it comes from Jobs himself. C'mon

Thats what Im talking about, yes we can... a wifi signal is a wifi signal, how can you think the iPad are going to recognize if you are sending signal from a router or your iPhone as a hotspot?
