  • Grooveshark: The App Store's Loss and Cydia's Gain

    Grooveshark, the namesake of an online music streaming service, has finally faced the music: indeed, it will never be openly embraced by Apple or the App Store.

    Despite not feeling the love from Cupertino, Grooveshark made the logical transition to the repository of other wayward applications that we still love and can't seem to get enough of. This weekend Grooveshark released their app on Cydia.

    Instead of relying solely on its recently re-tooled and updated web application, existing customers can finally get the long-awaited Grooveshark App for the iPhone - a jailbroken iPhone, that is.

    Like Rhapsody or Spotify (but better), VIP users of Grooveshark are privy to tracks from gargantuan catalogs of music that are easily accessible and searchable. Best of all, once you've discovered the track you're looking for, you can promptly stream the tune right from your handset.

    The advantages of Grooveshark in comparison to competing services are pretty clear. In a nutshell, Grooveshark's users upload music content straight to Grooveshark's servers. This makes Grooveshark's content base not only huge, but also more free-spirited" in a social networking kind of aspect. Naturally, some legal snafus have proven problematic for the company, but, overall, Grooveshark has worked well with major labels and other copyright owners. And, as it now stands, Grooveshark is making notable progress in ironing out licensing-related issues.

    For obvious reasons, one can see the concerns Apple would have with such an app. Nonetheless, expect Grooveshark to be a huge and welcome addition to the Cydia family.

      I've been a grooveshark user for about a year and I've been waiting for this for ages. I gave up waiting on AppStore approval, and sent ben @grooveshark a message on Twitter suggesting they make a move for cydia about two weeks ago. I'm not sure if they actually took my advice, or were already planning it. I just happened to find the app on cydia by accident. so I got a VIP account which I have been wanting for a while.

      The app is awesome. Very smooth. It's everything I had hoped for.

      Sure, but let's focus on what this app actually does:
      1. Legal Music - The artists are getting something (not much, but at least something)
      2. You don't have to store your music, just stream it. I use this service at home and work, their desktop version runs on air and is fantastic
      3. You can download the music off there if you know how.
      4. Limewire/Public Trackers will get you in ALOT of trouble by your ISP if you do alot of it.
      5. Every song I've tried I've found and it's been a valid song.
      6. Their price of $3 a month is crazy cheap considering how much you can use it, now even on wifi/3g if it's unmetered where you love.
      7. It's actually legal (saying this again).

      Give me 3 reasons why this thing is better than spotify and I'll give this article some credit.....
      Spotify = 120/year
      grooveshark = 20 / year

      That's 100 good reasons for me.

      The price isn't bad at all. iPhone users have yet another option while Zune users hang their heads in shame.

      Zune Pass $14.99/mo
      Spotify Premium 9.99 Euros = $13.61/mo*
      Grooveshark $3.00/mo

      *Not available in USA

      I went ahead and opted in for a year. I love what grooveshark is doing, for the web and iPhone, so it's high time I start supporting them.

      Why would Spotify get approved and this app rejected? Makes me kinda question the legality of Grooveshark...........

      It is working for me on T-Mobile. Click on Settings and Sign In. If you are still having trouble then try re-installing the app.

      I've given up hope for streaming apps long time ago, thank god for this now I do not have to buy another mp3 player.
      Paid 1 year subscription, though it is very dangerous because I do not know what Apple/AT&T will do... But $30 is nothing so why not.
