  • Ridiculously Cheap Fake iPhones Come to the West

China has long had a burgeoning market in knockoff iPhones, since the genuine article wasn't available in the Middle Kingdom for years after its launch, and even now is so expensive in legitimate outlets that it is out of the reach of most Chinese workers. Evidence is beginning to emerge that copycat iPhones (called shanzhai in Mandarin) are coming to the Western world... and bringing their low price tags with them.

Steve Cassidy at PCPro received a call from a friend who said that someone had sold him an iPhone at a pub for £25, or the equivalent of $38 US. The phone comes in a case identical to the iPhone 3GS right down to the Apple label on the back, with a few telltale differences - such as the mute switch bring a pushbutton rather than a slider - and an oddball screen display, with an iPod icon that looks like a CD and an Internet Explorer logo in place of the Safari icon. Other than that, according to Cassidy, this phone is "good enough to fool those who havenít used the real deal."

The fake - which commenters on Cassidy's blog think is a SciPhone i68 - has two batteries and supports dual SIMs, all of which are accessed by lifting the back plate, which is removable on this device. The touchscreen allows access to an array of workalike apps, including a "Java" icon and a porn app... which clearly marks this phone as a copy, as Apple would clearly never allow such a thing.

Most shanzhal phones - such as the micro-mini CECT m188 - differ significantly enough from the genuine article so as not they will not incur Apple's wrath. This copycat tries hard to look just like an iPhone, though, and the fake label would be something that Apple's legal team would attack with a vengeance should this item ever be legitimately offered for sale. While the quality almost certainly falls short of the original. should these devices ever come to the West in greater numbers, it may start putting price pressure on Apple's products. For now, it's hard to see this as more than just a curiosity.

My brother lives in Spain and bought one of these.
He was conned. We tried to make out that it was OK because it was cheap but then he had to admit after a couple of days that it wasn't.
These are not worth $2 anyone who buys one will be disappointed.
I love my Bro and he is intelligent but he was conned and no matter how much we tried to make it seem all right, it wasn't.
Please don't be stupid enough to buy one of these. They are far worse than you think.

Its not long before iPod touches are turned it "Real" iPhones. A Hackintouch if you will !!! Taking the parts from an old Att phone and integrating it with an iTouch.

(And no I'm not talking about skype or anything like that)

P.S. Apple needs to be taken down a peg or two !!!!!!

**Side Note** You could @ least buy these cheap knock offs for the screen if the dimensions are the same just to have a spare lying around.

The phones run on the Windows 95 OS if your going to put mp4 movies on the removable memory card and it will play any movie you put on the 2gb or 8gb depending on what phone comes with. It works usually they come with the Simpsons on it. You definitely don't have to worry about baseband updates! or unlocking firmware as its dual sim could run att sim and tmobile sim side-by-side!!! Thats almost business phone ranking on this phone.

      or $300..
      32g iphone for $300

I like the ad that says "don't like dirtying your screen, don't worry, comes with a stylus". LOL, anyone that has ever had the miserable experience of using one of these clones knows the reason that they come with a stylus is because the touchscreens suck so bad you can't navigate around without one.

These clones are sold everywhere in the world. There are people who will go for these for the right price. Remember, most new phones are at least $150-$200. iPhone is at least $300 for the 3G 8GB without contract. I've seen and played with these clones before. I am not impressed, but they have all of the phone plus some media functions like mp3 and video players, which for some people are all they want.

I saw one of these clones over the summer at a local flea market. They were selling knock off ipods and I asked if they had anything like an iphone for kicks and next thing I knew the guy pulled out a case of "iphones". Felt like crap, they were trying to get $100ea for them. Only thing nice about it was the replaceable battery. Funny, the thing had all the apple logos and all on the back. I'll have to see this summer when the flea market opens back up if they are there again with anything new.

I can totally understand why someone would want a knockoff iPhone especially for the price difference. But I would rather the real thing. Like someone else had mentioned for someone who hasn't used the iPhone you'd probably wouldn't notice or care but if you've already used one then downgrading to a fake one might not be so great. I wouldn't downgrade just so i could change my battery.
