  • RedSn0w 0.9 Released for Mac and Windows

The first beta of RedSn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows has been unveiled, with version 0.9 enabling jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing of the iPhone OS 3.0/3.1.2 software.

From this morningís post on Erectric:

It appears as if the iPhone Dev-Team is back at it again. The group has managed to release the RedSn0w 0.9 Beta jailbreak for all iPhones and the first and second generation iPod Touches today for both Windows and Mac operating systems.
Strangely enough - and due to whatís being called ďlast minute software changesĒ - the Dev Team hasnít rolled out the release yet with grand fanfare. Fortunately, however, we do know what to expect from the update. According to iClarified:

    • It uses our original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because itís a bootrom exploit, it canít be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Appleís next firmware release.
    • It offers custom logos and verbose boot
    • It installs Cydia without needing a separate download
Despite blackra1n thriving as the jail breaking tool of choice, the new version of redsn0w could resonate with jail breakers new and old and perhaps become the hottest new tool in jail breaking.

The RedSn0w jailbreak isnít quite as fast as Blackra1n, but it is capable of handling more variations, according to the report.

      Didnt read whole thread btw.
We can tell... Yes, you are still tethered by using redsn0w if you have the newer bootrom. redsn0w is just an alternate (and some may feel its superior) tool to Jailbreak.

I know this is a Geohot vs. DevTeam thread (basically) but i'd like to say that redsn0w 0.9 works great on my iPod 2G on 3.0 FW (yeah it's old, don't judge me.) and the only thing that DOESN'T work is Verbose mode (not sure why, but i dont really care, got a sweet boot logo instead). I hated blackra1n for a time, because it caused my WiFi not to work at all (even RC3 f*cked it up) but worked fine on my buddies 2G iPod.

This issue with the 3GS should be fixed now (as of Saturday night). Please try out the newest beta download.

^Any luck on un-tethered for the latest bootrom in the near future? People are dying to know so I thought maybe you could address them so they will stop asking

Angie, wow nothing. How many times do you see people asking the same thing over and over in this thread, and every other thread for that matter regarding the tethered JB. Let MN address it and put the damn thing to rest already. Where is the "wow" factor? You know once the Dev Blog is updated with the new Redsn0w 0.9 release you will be bombarded with this same question over and over again.

Thanks so much MuscleNerd I'll give it a go.

Just a quick question, I had an iPhone 3gs which was jailbroken using blackrain and was tethered (had to re-jb every reboot). I had a problem with it and apple replaced it for me. My new one came, jailbroke it using blackrain and it wasnt tethered (rebooted fine) so guessing the new one was the old bootrom? My new Model number is MC131B, and the beginning of my serial number is 5K947 and so this would indicate its the new bootrom - so i'm just confused on whether to click this is the new bootrom or old bootrom on redsnow.

      Please advise,
      Thanks

It's the old one. The 3rd digit of your serial number is "K" which indicates it's a refurbed phone. There's no way to tell whether a refurbished phone is tethered or not by the serial #, and since you're not tethered with blackra1n, you won't be with redsn0w.

      Lucky you

angie - a chance for me to correct your spelling!

      It is spelt 2 n d not 3 r d

Refurbed 3G and 3GS iPhones nearly always start 5G or 5K

Hmm...so is there any point to download the 3.1.2 custom ipsw to use this?

I used the previous version of redsn0w to JB 3.0.1 on my 3GS and that's what I'm still running...

You DO NOT use custom firmwares with redsn0w.
    1. confucious's Avatar
      confucious -
Custom FW is only necessary to preserve the BB at 04.26.08 in order to use UltraSn0w to unlock. To make a custom FW you need pwnage which also jailbreaks so RedSn0w is unnecessary.
RedSn0w jailbreaks standard FW but if you have upgraded to 3.12 or your phone came with 3.12 then your BB will b e at 05.11.07 so UltraSn0w will not work and you need either an official unlock or to use BlackSn0w to unlock.

      @stealthbravo & @confucious

Since you 2 are very helpful guru's thought maybe I could clear up why dummies like me may be confused.

The first sentence of the article on redsn0w 0.9 states,

"The first beta of RedSn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows has been unveiled, with version 0.9 enabling jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing of the iPhone OS 3.0/3.1.2 software."

Well, silly me reads that as redsn0w providing a jailbreak and unlock. I'm still not sure what it means by unlocking after reading @confucious last post. Since I'm gonna need an unlock in June to take my iPhone to World Cup I thought I'd give it run now. I've got 3G with 3.1.2 that was jailbroken with PwnageTool. So after running it (and checking previously jailbroken box and pointing to original 3.1.2 firmware), it appears nothing has happened other than on hard reboot I see and apple now as opposed to pineapple. I've got redsnow checked in winterboard, but nothing.

I still have tethering under Network (thanks Stealth), my carrier is still 5.5 and modem firmware is still 04.26.08. So now reading what confucious wrote, am I correct that all I need to do is run ultrasn0w to unlock since I'm 04.26.08. And really that's all I needed to do. I'm just lucky that unnecessarily running redsn0w didn't change my baseband?

Thanks and again - speaking for idiots putting unlocking in that first sentence makes it confusing.

      Cheers

Unlock simply means the ability to use ANY sim card from any counrty in your phone, and YES - Ultrasnow WILL unlock 04.26.08 (I know this cos that's what I'm currently using (though my carrier is 5.0)....and I've tried various sim cards from friends from other continents, and they ALL work...so far)!

      Hope that helps

@iLaw-One Yeah, I went ahead and installed ultrasn0w and popped in my buddies T-Mobile sim and it worked fine

That still doesn't answer what the article writer means when he states redsn0w will unlock your iPhone?

One further question. Now that I've popped my ATT sim back in I'm not getting voicemails. Do I need to call ATT to re-sync that???

redsn0w does not unlock your phone-end of story

Be patient, your voicemails will come back shortly. You may need to reset the network settings.
