  • RedSn0w 0.9 Released for Mac and Windows

The first beta of RedSn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows has been unveiled, with version 0.9 enabling jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing of the iPhone OS 3.0/3.1.2 software.

From this morningís post on Erectric:

It appears as if the iPhone Dev-Team is back at it again. The group has managed to release the RedSn0w 0.9 Beta jailbreak for all iPhones and the first and second generation iPod Touches today for both Windows and Mac operating systems.
Strangely enough - and due to whatís being called ďlast minute software changesĒ - the Dev Team hasnít rolled out the release yet with grand fanfare. Fortunately, however, we do know what to expect from the update. According to iClarified:

    • It uses our original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because itís a bootrom exploit, it canít be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Appleís next firmware release.
    • It offers custom logos and verbose boot
    • It installs Cydia without needing a separate download
Despite blackra1n thriving as the jail breaking tool of choice, the new version of redsn0w could resonate with jail breakers new and old and perhaps become the hottest new tool in jail breaking.

The RedSn0w jailbreak isnít quite as fast as Blackra1n, but it is capable of handling more variations, according to the report.

You can determine your week based on your serial number in settings, general, about. Look the 3rd, 4th, and 5th digits. If it is larger than 940 you will have a tethered jailbreak only.

I picked up a refurb tonight, and I can confirm neither blackrain nor redsnow can jailbreak it. Blackrain will jailbreak the device, but once you reboot it shows the apple logo then shuts down. It doesn't reach the recovery mode screen allowing you to do a tethered jailbreak. Even if you force the device to go into recovery mode, the tethered jailbreak doesn't work. It's back to square one I suppose. This is just another reason for me NOT to purchase the next iphone revision.
      Wow, are you serious?

No I am not joking. I got mine late November when my contract was up and I can get a new one. All this time I was busy and did not get around to jailbreaking until recently. Never had to tether jailbreak yet but it may be because I just recently did the jailbreak, so was curious about how to tell which iPhone 3GS I got.
Luckily I got one of the older ones that was sitting in AT&T store, all because people were too cheap and do not want to buy the 32GB version (they ran out of 16GB).

yes, jailbreaking no longer works on week 50 or later 3GS's. The bootrom has been updated. I successfully jailbroke with blackra1n, but the tether doesn't work, so if you ever restart (ie install winterboard) the phone won't turn back on no matter what. It hangs at the apple logo and then turns off. You have to force it into DFU and restore. Redsnow isn't even able to load the ramdisk. Now there's an even greater need to find a new exploit.

Wow so this means blackra1n is better because at least it works on week 50, even if it hangs you can force DFU and restore then jailbreak with blackra1n again.
So I guess people who was knocking on Blackra1n spoke too early.

Actually I never really had a need until now, I buy my apps and I am using AT&T I still have my old iPhones(3 other ones). Only reason I jailbreak this 3GS is because I want the MyWi on it so I can share my 3GS speed

Is Redsnow a little bit late to the party? Unless redsnow is capable of jailbreak iPhone os 4.0

If the Dev Team offered a new software carrier unlock, I would be all over it. Blacksn0w has caused me nothing but problems and I would love a stable alternative.

I've never used Blackrain or whatever it's called, and hopefully I will NEVER have to cos I have faith in the DT and perfer them as they're more reliable.

Unless they (DT) come out tomorrow and say they're no longer with the community, I'll always wait for whenever they release their JB tools!!!
Damn man... get that brown stuff off your nose and face.. sheesh.

Some of you crack me up.... Personaly. i dont give a ##@@ who makes what... as long as it WORKS!... I too am sick of the
T-JB... But i thought i could deal without being JBed... It lasted about a day... the phone is 1093019303 times better JB'ed and if i have to have my laptop handy in the event i have to reboot it... so be it.. Just wish i knew this before i swapped my cracked screen iphone.. i woulda fixed it myself!!

Some of you are saying Redsn0w is late, but honestly Geohot's program is not the best. I personally havent had any trouble with it, but ive heard of MANY others experiencing huge problems.

The dev team is just far superior as far as coding. They take much more time to get it perfect, while geohot just tries to get it working.

Lastly half of the posts on every thread are asking when the ipt3 and 3GS will be untethered, and it is my opinion that both geohot and the dev team have found a working exploit. The reason for not releasing it , is that with OS 4.0 and the new iphone (4G ?) coming out if the new bootrom was exploited it would be fixed and all that work was done for nothing. However if it is keept private, apple will release the new phone and the exploit will JB both the new phone as well as the old ones.

I have no need for unlock yet, but it does not mean I don't want one in the future. Right now company pays for my calls when I outside of U.S., no point saving them money But I may want it when I vacation some where, hope dev team comes out with a stable jailbreak AND unlock.

I have been thinking for about two months that this would be the smart thing to do.

      Hi,

      I have a 3GS 3.1.2 old boot room.

I have jailbroken using blackrain but I have had all the standard problems, plus my iphone reboots randomly when I use it (about 10 times a day!) only after the jail break. If I restore its fine but I need the jailbreak because I am with another carrier. So I wanted to try redsn0w so i restored the phone.

Ran it followed all instructions and then after it says the rest of the process will continue on the phone, the iphone screen stays black but lit up, and it doesnt do anything.

Funny thing is that I tried running this when I still had a blackrain JB, and it showed the jailbreak image on my phone when I was using redsn0w 0.9. Thankful for this new release but had to revert back to blackrain till I get more info.

      Anyone else having this problem?

      Thanks
