  • RedSn0w 0.9 Released for Mac and Windows

The first beta of RedSn0w 0.9 for Mac and Windows has been unveiled, with version 0.9 enabling jailbreaking, unlocking, and customizing of the iPhone OS 3.0/3.1.2 software.

From this morning’s post on Erectric:

It appears as if the iPhone Dev-Team is back at it again. The group has managed to release the RedSn0w 0.9 Beta jailbreak for all iPhones and the first and second generation iPod Touches today for both Windows and Mac operating systems.
Strangely enough - and due to what’s being called “last minute software changes” - the Dev Team hasn’t rolled out the release yet with grand fanfare. Fortunately, however, we do know what to expect from the update. According to iClarified:

    • It uses our original Pwnage bootrom exploit for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod 1G. (Because it’s a bootrom exploit, it can’t be fixed by Apple without a new hardware release.) Note that redsn0w 0.9 does use the USB exploit for iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G running 3.1.2, but that exploit will be fixed in Apple’s next firmware release.
    • It offers custom logos and verbose boot
    • It installs Cydia without needing a separate download
Despite blackra1n thriving as the jail breaking tool of choice, the new version of redsn0w could resonate with jail breakers new and old and perhaps become the hottest new tool in jail breaking.

The RedSn0w jailbreak isn’t quite as fast as Blackra1n, but it is capable of handling more variations, according to the report.

Most people will have already been jailbroken by now or will use blackra1n as it's quick and easy.

If there was an untethered jailbreak, then that's a different story.
I agree with you 100% f the unlocks work on the tethered jailbreaks

can someone explain to me what a "tethered" jailbreak is? I have used blackra1n once on my 3gs and have never had to run it again. That was six months ago. I have rebooted my phone numerous times and it is still remains jailbroken after the reboot. I see people referring to having to re-run blackra1n after a reboot. Are they talking about restoring, because after a restore then obviously you would have to run blackra1n again.

There is a new version of the 3GS that came out late 2009 that needs to be rejailbroke everytime the phone turns off or reboots. You have had yours for 6 months so yours is the 1st version of the 3GS. Hope this clears things up for you.

agreeing w/ most ppl here, nothing to get excited about till we get an untethered jb for new bootrom. its the one thing thats stopped me from jailbreaking my 3gs for the simple fact that my phone always messes up when im nowhere near a computer

Blackra1n isn't buggy, well at least not for me.
I don't really look at my boot screen often or restart my iPhone.
Last time I used verbose boot was back in the 1.1.1 days on the iPhone 2G and to this day I still don't know what that means or does. lol.

I have not had any problems with blackra1n i dont know why people are hating on geohot, i know hes kinda cocky but he is the original iphone hacker, where would be if he would not do what he does? Still un-jailbroken complaining about the things apple wont let us do. Thanks to all the devs!

I used PwnageTool to JB my 3G on 3.1.2 when it came out a few months ago. I didn’t think I would ever need to unlock, but now I do.

Can I use redsnow beta that just came out to unlock? Or do I need to restore and re-jailbreak with redsn0w to use redsn0w to unlock?

      What does verbose mode do

If you read the details given by the Dev Team, it answers almost all the questions asked above.

Personally I like having a custom boot logo, too bad LogoMe doesn't work anymore.

Hopefully the Dev Team released this now just to let us know they're still thinking about jailbreaking/unlocking iDevices. Maybe they already have something ready and waiting for the 4.0 firmware release (fingers crossed!).

I for some reason are attached to redsn0w, it takes me back to when I tried for ages to run 0.1! I did it and it worked fine, I just remember that one day I was out, iPod touch ran out 2hrs to nearest computer that I could use to boot. I was lonely. After that I kept tethered but I allways wanted semi-tethered but didn't bother. Now random emoji: 

But I jailbroke my 3GS as soon as the jailbreak came out. I was so obsessed, I found a site that posted immedietly when a jailbreak came out for 3GS and made an AppleScript to notify me. Yes, mad I know!

Well, I'm not most people and I believe that goes for quite a few others...
I've never used Blackrain or whatever it's called, and hopefully I will NEVER have to cos I have faith in the DT and perfer them as they're more reliable.

Unless they (DT) come out tomorrow and say they're no longer with the community, I'll always wait for whenever they release their JB tools!!!

I am utterly amazed at the entitlement that I see in these comments. No wonder Geohot doesn't want to deal with this crowd. Instead of being thankful that all of these Devs devote their time to releasing something that helps all of us, I see a lot of people saying "useless."

Dev Team (though I know you won't read this) thanks for your hard work. Thanks for a 2nd option for jailbreak. Thanks for seemingly laying the ground work for the upcoming 4.0 release (those who want untethered, that's your best bet, wait for 4.0). Geohot, thanks for blackra1n & thanks to all those people out there working hard to find the next exploit we can all use to free our iPhones.

Keep up the good work, all of you.

Yeah i agree, geohot is good at what he does, and blackra1n is a good jailbreak. i'm just tired of my wifi acting up, my location not working all the time, and my youtube being hit or miss on it working or not. geohot even said it had its bugs. i've never had any problems with any dev team jailbreaks though. i just think it's more stable. i guess after using dev team jailbreaks since the first gen i'm used to jailbreak having less problems. but it's all personal preference
