  • blackra1n RC2 Released, Tethered Jailbreak for iPhone 3GS

George (GeoHot) Hotz released version RC2 of his blackra1n "all device" jailbreak tonight. The update fixes a number of issues, and includes a working version of Icy along with Mac support.

In the initial release, blackra1n jailbroke all iPhones and iPod touches running on iPhone 3.1.2 firmware except for the newer 8GB iPod touches. The update, blackra1n RC2, jailbreaks all iPhone and iPod touches, but the iPod touch and iPhone 3GS running the newer bootrom require tethered jailbreaks, meaning blackra1n must be run each time the iPhone or iPod touch is rebooted. There were a number of issues jailbreaking iPhone 3G devices under the original version which GeoHot claims to have fixed in the new release.

GeoHot's blog reports the following changes in RC2:
    • Fixed all issues that you might had when jailbreaking iPhone 3G with blackra1n RC1.
    • Tethered jailbreak for 3.1 OOTB iPod touch 8GB and all the new iPhone 3GSs.
    • Fixed Icy issues.
    • Works on both Windows and Mac.
    • If you used RC1 with success, no need to rerun

Windows and Mac downloads are available at blackra1n.com.

I ran blackra1n RC1. That jailbreak got all kind of bugs. I hope RC2 would work.

It means if your battery dies or an app crashes and you have to reboot your device it must be connected to your computer everytime you restart.

Everyone was a noob once. If anything, I'm more of a noob because I haven't been keeping up with the jailbreak scene since the beginning of the year.

Anyways, tethered jailbreak means that every time you reboot the device, you have to be connected to the computer

This is my first time jailbreaking my 3GS since I got it.

Yes this is great if you have a MAC but you don't really have an option when it come the jailbreak for 3.1.2 on a PC.

off topic... i know... (so sorry in adv)

but there may be some people out there with the same question: how come my phone still isn't unlocked after the 'ra1n'?

      1. jb and unlock are different
      2. if ur like me and have a 3GS that was 3.1 OOB, ur SOL. (for the unlock that is...)

patiently waiting either a baseband downgrade or the 5.14xxx baseband unlock.

And I have no problem giving GeoHot a donation. he put in a lot of good work!
You must have the older 3GS. I believe the newest 3GS out of the box have different hardware.

Cohem: you have to google for the custom firmware. We cannot link to them on this forum.

      Thank you, Geohot.

Now I can buy a 3GS without getting scared about not theming, tether or no tether (my laptop is usually with me at all times, anyways).

I feel like I'm going to cry.
