  • Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 is out, Jailbreaks 3.1.2 and 3GS OOB
Would you like a little Pwnage Pi[e]?

Pwnage Tool 3.1.4 is out, jailbreaks the 3.1.2 release of the iPhone software for iPhone 2G/3G/3GS and iPod Touch 1G/2G for all you OS X folks who've been waiting. It also now jailbreaks the iPhone 3G[S] out of the box! Check out their blog post for full details.

This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband. For those who have been onboard the “unlock train”, simply install ultrasn0w via Cydia once you’ve restored to your custom IPSW. Don’t forget to turn off the “3G” setting in Settings->General->Network if you use T-Mobile in the U.S.A.

Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS. It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray. Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates. For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).

For the early adopters who ran blackra1n and are having problems with mobilesubstrate, winterboard, diskaid, or ifunbox, you can install a custom .ipsw from PwnageTool to fix these issues. That’s because all jailbroken devices accept a custom .ipsw created by PwnageTool. (However, if you ran blackra1n on a 3G or 3GS that means you updated to stock 3.1.x, and the carrier unlock is now out of reach. We’ll continue to work on a carrier unlock for the latest basebands, but the timeframe for such an unlock is unknowable.)

Note: If you use internet tethering on a carrier that doesn’t officially support it, you’ll lose it by going to 3.1.x. Stay back at 3.0 until a hack for that is developed.

Pwnage Tool's jailbreak is so much better than Blackra!n. Winterboard is working perfectly.

My 3G is unlocked at 3.1 right now but I got it from my law-abiding roomie who may or may not have updated it to a regular version of the 3.0 or 3.1 firmware. My modem firmware is 4.26.08, does anyone know if that falls within the safe-to-upgrade category?
If not, simply restoring to a custom 3.0 firmware file won't change the baseband back to where it needs to be, will it?

My reminder is acting funny as well. It will show missed calls/sms but no email notifications. Time for an update...

I am on 3.1.2 using T-Mobile with both a 3GS and a 3G. I used MakeItMine to get the carrier name back on both phones. Still no carrier name without it - not that I care. Interestingly enough, my daughter's 2G is also on 3.1.2 with T-Mobile and she DOES have the carrier name.

I don't know who else had this PROBLEM but I have an iPhone 3GS and I used Pwnage tool 3.1.4 to create the 3.1.2 firmware, I did everything correctly and my phones is running fine, the problem is when the phone completely dies, I plug it in to charge when I get home and it literally sits on the low battery with red little battery left for about an hour last time it did it.. Anyone else have this problem? or find a fix?

      Message me????

Just want to reply to myself. I went back to 3.0.1 and the issue was the same, so I went back to 3.1.2 again. Then I read somewhere to reset the phone (hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds until the screen goes blank and the apple logo appears). I did that, and it froze for a bit (it took like 3 or 4 minutes to show the slide to unlock screen), but after that, my battery life is great.

I took it off my charger 8:00am Friday, browsed the web a little, listened to a few voicemails, took some short calls, did a couple of texts. Very light use. On Saturday morning at 11:00am, I'm at 90%. So I think the reset did something.

Im currently running iPhone 3GS 3.0FW. Is it worth upgrading to iPhone 3GS 3.1.2FW? It would be a Custom FW as I use Windows. Just curious if I should go to 3.1FW or just CFW up to the newest 3.1.2FW?

I take it you are using AT&T as your carrier. Correct? I have an iPhone 3G running 3.1.2 on T-Mobile and MMS works fine. I read some posts on MMI that your problem is caused by the carrier 5.6 update from AT&T. You will need to go back to carrier 5.5. I am not positive, but I believe to can't uninstall a carrier update so you may need to restore your custom 3.1.2 firmware again and then follow the below instructions in the link:

Yes I'm officially with AT&T. I didn't do the full custom restore, instead I went back to 5.5 and still no go. I even tried the 6.0 file carrier where it game me options to "cellular data network" and still wont work.
My MMS was working fine on 3.0.1 (before this latest 3.1.2 JB) after hacking the file carrier to 5.0 even before the official MMS was released! Any other thoughts? Is it time to make it rain?

Blackra1n or PwnageTool have nothing to do with the problem. I have read in some posts that once carrier 5.6 is installed MMS will not work, even if you install other carrier updates like 5.5 over it.

I am absolutely positive you will need to restore a stock or custom firmware to resolve this situation. There are 7 pages under this topic thread on forums.macrumors.com. If you read through all the pages you will understand.

      1. Restore stock or custom 3.1.2 firmware. Set up your iPhone as new. Do not restore from backup.
      2. Do not install the 5.6 carrier update through iTunes.
      3. Follow the instructions in the below link. Many people have reported success with these instructions at

      Troubleshooting steps
      • If you installed any carrier themes from Cydia like the AT&T logo, you will need to uninstall them and try again.
      • If you have "MakeItMine" installed from Cydia, you will need to uninstall that too.
      • If the 5.5 Official Carrier File called ATT_US.ipcc has a .zip extension, just delete the .zip from the name and try installing it.
      • Try performing a "Reset Settings". Settings -> Network ->Cellular Data Network -> Reset Settings
      • Contact AT&T Support - In some AT&T customer cases, AT&T removed the messaging plan from their iPhone plan.
