  • How to Jailbreak iPhone 3GS on 3.0 [redsn0w/windows]
This is a guide on how to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware using redsn0w 0.8 for windows. The process is identical to all the other previous redsn0w guides. This will just jailbreak your iPhone. It will not unlock it. To unlock the iPhone 3GS use ultrasn0w (info here). This guide is for 3.0 only. NOT 3.1.

Your iPhone 3GS should already be on firmware 3.0 before you begin.
    First download redsn0w 0.8 (windows)
Download 3.0 iPhone 3GS firmware .ipsw

Extract and then run redsn0w. Click browse.

Find your iPhone 3GS 3.0 firmware file. Select it and click Open.

redsn0w says your IPSW has been successfully identified. Click next.

    redsnow starts doing its thing.

    Select your options. Click next.

Follow the directions to get your iPhone into restore mode.

redsn0w starts uploading everything to your iPhone.

You will see the done screen. You can click finish at this time. On your iPhone you'll see some text and the pwnage icon for awhile as your iPhone is being jailbroken. Do not mess with it during this time. When it is finished your iPhone will be on the lock screen fully jailbroken

Cheers mate, Its a combination of a few. Go to cydia, and download "Umicon" "Icomplete" They are in the complete themes section. then in winterboard, arrange the themes in this order: User wallpaper, Umicon, Icomplete, transparent dock.

You just need to search google for some good iphone background images, then surf on your phone to the same page, and save the image.

      Looking for advise.
I am trying to understand the importance (or need), to grab the iBEC and iBSS files as mentioned a couple times in this thread. Here are my "concerns".

1.) Today I am running stock 3GS, 3.0 firmware. Fine..
2.) I want to Jailbreak (Not Unlock)
3.) I will probably use Purplera1n to jailbreak
4.) I will have fun with my Jailbroken 3GS but.....
..In a couple weeks (let's assume), a new official firmware is release from Apple (3.0.1, 3.1??) which fixes some things such as battery life and such. I want the new official Apple firmware, and decide the official fixes are more important to me than the benefits of Jailbreaking (again, just assuming).
5.) Can I simply restore my phone to default?
6.) Do I need to have saved any special files before I do ANYTHING, or can I plug my Jailbroken iPhone into iTunes, download the official update and be happy?

Sorry for the newbie questions, I honestly tried searching before I posted, but all I see is that the iBEC and iBSS are needed for "Future Jailbreaking"... What exactly does that mean??

The reason for grabbing the iBEC and iBSS files is these are the signed files that apple sends to and from your phone to their servers to verify the phone. Have these files will allow you to be able to use future jailbreaks.

      4) When 3.1 comes out you will be able to just "restore" to that firmware if you don't plan on jailbreaking. The jailbreak will usually be out a few days afterwards.

      5) Yes, you can always do that.

      6) No special files are needed for syncing your phone with iTunes after you have jailbroke it. Now the 2nd part of your question is you will need to restore it to the new update but your jailbreak will be gone after restoring to the new update.

What "Future Jailbreak" means is that the DEV team has found out that these files are crucial to the jailbreaking process since Apple uses these file to close loops or verify the phone, not fully sure exactly but it's along those lines. Having your current iBEC and iBSS now before the hole is fixed will allow them to reuse these files for future jailbreaks even after Apple patches them for 3.1.

I used redsn0w from the DEV team.

All you have to do is right click on the file and click rename. Make sure you have the option to show file extensions turned on.

IF you still can't figure it out just follow the link I posted and redownload the file.
