  • Cycorder - Superior Free Video Recorder for 3G and 2.x

Jay Freeman (aka Saurik), author of Cydia and WinterBoard, Friday released Cycorder (website not REALLY there yet. ), a FREE native iPhone video recorder application. The release comes hot on the tails of DreamCatcher's 2.x release of their $19.95 iPhone Video Recorder software, and is superior in many aspects.

Before, I get into the details, here's a sample video recorded with Cycorder.

    [ame]http://saurik.cachefly.net/cycorder.mov[/ame]

Quality on the videos is much higher than iPhone Video Recorder's movies, due to Saurik's use of MJPEG compression - the same compression used in the majority of point and shoot digital camera's with video support. Oh, and there is no waiting 3 times as long as your video length after you record before the video compresses and lets you watch it (as Showtime did, in 1.x firmwares - its not yet out for 2.x iPhones) - when you finish recording a video with Cycorder, you can immediately play the video back.

The video playback list has a slick first-frame thumbnail shown for each video you've taken, vs just a listing of the time's of each video as competing video recorders have (MUCH easier to tell which video is which - if you record several videos in an evening or day, the times really don't help you much at all later).

Videos are recorded at 384x288, a 4x3 aspect ratio. Depending on how well lit the area is, videos are recorded at between 6-15 fps. Saurik notes that the large variance of fps is due to the iPhone camera, which when video is recorded is basically taking pictures as fast as it can and when you take those photos the camera has to open its shutter, let in the light that makes up the photo, and close the shutter. The less light, the longer it takes to do that. So, better lighting equals higher quality fps, and therefore smoother videos.

The UI is done in landscape mode, and is extremely simple and easy to use - press the large center button on the right (bottom if the iPhone is held vertically) to record/stop recording, and press the small arrow to open up your playback list. Saurik mentioned he's looking at ways to even have the videos show up in your iPod Videos list once recorded in Cycorder.

    Update!!!! Cycorder now includes audio

Cycorder can be downloaded now from Cydia (its on the Featured Packages list on the front page of Cydia, or in the Multimedia section. I'd definitely recommend it - the video quality is the best out there, and audio will be included shortly.

Anyone notice the status bar bug when you hop out of the app and back in? To reproduce this, simply start recording a video, hit the home button, then jump back into cycorder. The status bar will now be stuck on display, this includes during video playback and everywhere else for that matter.

This is fixed by just exiting the app and launching it again. No big deal, just thought I'd throw that out there

because the iphone camera was built that way. While some apps have a digital zoom like snapture, too much digital zoom would look horrible. For a real good zoom you would need a camera with adjustable lens, which the iPhone lacks

If someone was to create a snap on piece that adjust, that would be handy for someone to take pics, but then again, a 2mp camera....

How about a REAL add on optical lense for the iphone camera? They really make some it looks like, how funny.

(not sure these work with 3G though)
      Look fun though haha.

EDIT: found one that fits 3G

Yeah, known issue. I tried a lot of different things to make the status bar go away then, but I seem to lose control over it once I get suspended and resumed. I've been given another technique that seems overall better from a co-developer that I believe will solve the problem (but I haven't tried it yet).

I have a question, when I downloaded the video to my pc and watched, objects in the video shown horizotally. I shot it with my phone held vertically. It shown vertically in the phone. Does it mean that I have to record with my phone hold horizontally?

      PQ is awsome.

Thank you for your answer. It's just strange that every camera phone out there has a zoom feature but the iPhone does not!!!!!

Apple is very controlling about the software that goes on their devices. The /reason/ we jailbreak our phones is so that we can do the things with them that we want, including install the software that we want. Apple specifically designed a much simpler/braindead set of tools for people to build applications with over the course of building their "SDK" and now carefully scrutinizes incoming programs to verify they don't do anything too awesome.

I /will/ say that, if you want to change their minds, you might poke them about how awesome Cycorder is. I bet if they get a few tens of thousands of requests for it they might change their mind about a few APIs that are keeping programs that record video from getting in (although TV out still wouldn't be allowed, for example, and I doubt they would even be swayed on that one).

In order to give us all better access to these types of applications from larger, more well funded groups, I am working on turning Cydia into a true competitor to the App Store, a place where you won't find just games and simple web utilities, but a place where you can buy amazing software that takes advantage of the true potential of your device: programs like Cycorder or Snapture, IntelliBoard, etc. Keep your eyes glued on Cydia for future updates on this front ;P.

OK, no worries. Just thought I'd ask

This is the only "unofficial" app I'm bothered about to be honest, and as I'm sure jailbreaking is fine, just means I have to consider my jailbroken apps when upgrading f/w.
