  • DeepEnd: Add 3D Depth to Your SpringBoard

A few days ago I covered some news about a new app called 3DBoard, which created a 3D like effect for your SpringBoard icons. However, our good friend Ryan Petrich, developer of OverBoard, has been developing an app very similar called DeepEnd.

The biggest difference here is that it is the Wallpaper reacts to your movements rather than the icons, which creates a 3D feel and add's depth to your wallpaper. It is rumored that the price when release will compete with that of 3DBoard. Both apps are a similar end result yet work differently under the hood.

DeepEnd is currently still in beta, but for those impatient for the official release, you can try the beta version from Ryan Petrich’s beta repo: http://rpetri.ch/repo/.

It works with one eye close. Not too impressed. And they resized my wallpaper on home screen. I don't like that.

Same...kinda cool, but if there's any battery / performance hit, won't keep it.

Lol is a 3D SB some kind of new fad? Also this is way better than the last one. Shame that it proves me right about graphics tweaks slowing the animations though.

Go into settings and zoom out. It's set at 50% by default.

The reason it works on YouTube is because the video is taken from a single "eye" (ie: camera) perspective rather than true two-eye depth perception. So it will look great on video and in real life if you close one eye. But with both eyes open, true depth perception sees through the effect and effectively renders it useless.
Huh, interesting. Thanks for the analysis

I think what we really need is two wallpapers moving independently - so there's a wallpaper on top with an alpha/ transparency and a wallpaper below that move at different speeds depending on the tilt. I think that would give a better 3D effect.

Or, like someone stated, a mix between both the icons AND the background moving.

Its a neat tweak, both vendors produce a nice effect, till the moment when you have to hold the phone still to use it, facing straight forward to you, and the effect dissapears. I mean, its a nice effect for the rest of people staring close to you.

pretty cool, looks to work good. However 15 minutes after i installed it my phone gave me a message that it was running too hot, and to wait until it cooled off to use it...
      Anyone else see this?

I wonder what would happen if you used both apps; one for the icons, the other for the background.....?

Probably nothing would happen and they would negate each other

tried it out for a few hours...battery has very little decrease, and the depth perception only works with few wallpaper...tried using the pitch, roll, and zoom but the more you increase it the more it looks fake..just looks like the wallpaper is floating. i am eager to try 3DBoard...the opposite effect of the icons moving instead may just look better.
