  • SmartScreen, like Dashboard for your iPhone

Wizdaz, one of the iPhone DevTeam members has announced a wonderful new application for the iPhone OS devices called SmartScreen, to be released under his startup MediaPhone.

SmartScreen basically is Dashboard for the iPhone. Just like Dashboard on your Mac, you can have widgets like weather, stocks etc on the iPhone lockscreen! You can also reposition the widgets the same way you move the apps, just tap and hold to move - and you can have upto 8 screens of different widgets. Its quite a neat approach for having widgets on iPhone OS - relatively better than what we've seen in the past.

This app will be compatible with all iPhone OS 3.x devices as long as you have them jailbroken. Of course like all good Cydia apps, it violates Apple's SDK agreement and cannot be sold on the AppStore. The cool news is that developers who are willing to create various widgets will be completely able to - an SDK for SmartScreen has been scheduled for release in November of this year. If you're interested to port yours, e-mail the developer @ [email protected] or [email protected]

No information on pricing has been given, but I do believe it is going to be minimal as the app is coming from a DevTeam member. Whatever it might cost (hopefully not more than the device xD), for me, it will be just another reason to jailbreak!

thats awesome, this and many others are reasons to jailbreak, liveclock and 5 column SB, stuff like this apple should just allow it, i bet theyd sell more phones if jailbreaking wasnt "illegal" in their eyes, having total control of the phone is the best part of owning this bad boy!

That does look really cool! Hopefully it can be made to replace...or if not...work with Intelliscreen. Not that I am looking to replace it, but i don't like duplicate technology if I can avoid it.

      Looking forward to this!

Yeah you're right. None of us here, on an iPhone forum, want or own iPhones.

Obviously this will be catered to 3G touch and 3Gs iphones. I have yet to see widgets that don't take a lot of memory. Two to three widgets running on my 3G iphone just kills it. Can't imagine having pages of widgets running on the lockscreen.

Multibar lockscreen works great on my 3G with little memory usage and I get all the info I need on one page with twitter integration.

Kudos though to the devs for at least being a little creative with the lockscreen.

cool? yes...the demise of intelliscreen? I don't think so..I was quite distracted by the sparkly finger nail polish, so I'm gonna have to watch again...great work though!

EDIT: watched it again, still distracted by the nail polish...but, in all seriousness, I've read a few comments of how 'pretty' it looks..what's pretty about the default look of native iPhone apps? nothing! Isn't that the reason a majority of us jailbreak in the first place so we can change how our phones look and customize it to fit our individual style? I know this is still in beta, but hopefully they will make it esthetically pleasing before it's released...

Okay, EVERYTHING is beautiful about the default look of native iphone apps. Im sure that it was easier to emulate a feature that was already in place in the iphone as well. It is crisp and convientiant. Considering this app was not created by apple or available without jailbreak, i would say it DEFINITELY changes the way our phones look AND customizing them.
