  • iPad Owners Must Pay for OS Updates, May Not Get All Features

People who buy the new iPad with version 3.2 of the iPhone OS are entitled to one free update when version 4 comes out, according to the licensing agreement that was released last night. This positions the new device - at least in terms of software licensing - as somewhere between an iPod and an iPhone, rather than between an iPhone and a MacBook, as Apple has said.

Apple officially released the iPhone SDK 3.2 gold master for developers to download last night. The final version fixed some minor bugs and completed iPad support, and included the licensing agreement. MacRumors waded through the standard terms and conditions to discover the limitation of one free major iPad software update before you have to pay. According to the agreement, "Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped…on your iPad, for free. If your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software…up to and including iPad 4.x.” However, the agreement also stipulates that "such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models".

iPod touch owners are used to paying for OS updates, but those updates have been full versions, including all the features supported by their hardware. If future releases of the iPhone OS are feature-limited to newer models, though, how happy are owners of older iPads going to be to pay for the updates?

Not unless they are asking me to pay for software bug fixes with OS or app software (that require you to upgrade to get the latest version of fixes). After all I paid for something "that just works."

Understand where you're coming from with the iPad FW on MMi, but it will be in other places. How do you think people get IPT upgrades for free?

You're a tool, lots of things in life are free. Now, if you were to have said "a lot of things that should be free aren't", I might have agreed because this world, for the most part, is not fair.

let's be honest here, I wanted the iPad just like most ppl but I'm not willing to spend without getting all the facts first, that being said I'm very dissapointed with this:

      1. The iPad is a simple device with a huge price tag.

      2. Forget the 14 days, this things packs a 30% restocking fee.

      3. If you don't update then your apps won't either.

      4. The greed that drives apple is really what keeping me away from the any future devices.

so with that said, I'm ready to move on from apple. I'm selling my 3gs tomorrow and I'm going google.

Have fun with upgrades from the providers for google devices. Think 10$ is a hefty price try having to buy a new phone for the newer versions of Android.

      DITTO!

You get free updates up to and including 4.0. Once 4.5 or 5.0 rolls out, whatever version they deem a major update, then you will pay. So $10 once maybe twice a year...

Why are you guys complaining again, won't you just pirate it anyways? Jerks.

HAHAAAAAAA......haahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaa..... iM CRYING OVER HERE!! This is too much..

I can see paying for updates on the ipod touch... the price for one was not $5-900... so thats understandable,.. but as I mentioned in all my previous post about apples greed, this just shows my point being made clear over and over again.

Boy this is the icing on the cake right here.... I wonder what other "hidden" charges are not posted for the Ipad....

      "boy I loooooove being right"
What the heck are you laughing so hard about? And you love being right about what? No one here even knows you

Yeah i have noticed that about Android devices. So many of them are 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, or 2.1. But i thought that some were getting the OTA update to whatever fw...?

Quite a few Android devices have had upgrades (major) over their lifetimes, many of which were OTA updated.

Let's not ignore the fact that there is a huge ROM cooking community in case the upgrade to 1.5/1.6 wasn't enough for you.

2.1 has been available on the Milestone (read: Moto DROID) for some time now and porting isn't exactly rocket science.

So where are these FW revisions that people who have more than a pair of brain cells to rub together going to come from?

      Bueller?

*Sits back and thinks*... I won't ever pay for any of these "upgrade" fees! Why?! Because I'll just sell my old iPad and pre-order the new one every year just like I do my iPhone
