  • iPad Owners Must Pay for OS Updates, May Not Get All Features

People who buy the new iPad with version 3.2 of the iPhone OS are entitled to one free update when version 4 comes out, according to the licensing agreement that was released last night. This positions the new device - at least in terms of software licensing - as somewhere between an iPod and an iPhone, rather than between an iPhone and a MacBook, as Apple has said.

Apple officially released the iPhone SDK 3.2 gold master for developers to download last night. The final version fixed some minor bugs and completed iPad support, and included the licensing agreement. MacRumors waded through the standard terms and conditions to discover the limitation of one free major iPad software update before you have to pay. According to the agreement, "Apple will provide you any iPad OS software updates that it may release from time to time, up to and including the next major iPad OS software release following the version of iPad OS software that originally shipped…on your iPad, for free. If your iPad originally shipped with iPad 3.x software, Apple would provide you with any iPad OS software…up to and including iPad 4.x.” However, the agreement also stipulates that "such updates and releases may not necessarily include all of the new software features that Apple releases for newer iPad models".

iPod touch owners are used to paying for OS updates, but those updates have been full versions, including all the features supported by their hardware. If future releases of the iPhone OS are feature-limited to newer models, though, how happy are owners of older iPads going to be to pay for the updates?

They wont hook us up, if you look at the ipad and compare it to the iphone, you will realize that they made alot of changes and the OS features are different.

OMG $10 update, what are we going to do!? The price of the update is nothing compared to the $1000 I'm already spending, plus the monthly 3G charge.

That's not the point. The fact is that iPad owners will pay for Apple's bugs and lack of functionality that should have been there. I don't care if it's $10 or $1. Users shouldn't be put in that position in the first place.

^as you've said repeatedly," it's just a big iPod touch"

so why are you so concerned about it?

Are you retarded? That makes no sense whatsoever. If you had Leopard OS X and wanted to update to Snow Leopard OS X you can buy the $29 installation update DVD and update your system and get all the new software AS WELL AS updates for the old software, and you'll have the exact same operating system running on your computer as you would if you bought the full installation disc for however much it is (Probably 100+) and reformatted. We shouldn't have to pay for the new software they release, that's ******** and it's just another money-making scheme by the infamous Apple Corporation and Steve Blow-Jobs.

I think people have the right to complain especially if what they say is true. Pay for an update and not have all feature included...really? If i pay for a software update i will expect all features added. All of these ridiculous games of add this add that later it's so stupid. I'm only going to stick with iPhone OS and MacBook Pro and that's it.

I have the iphone like every iphone owner we never pay for the os update, but if you get a major i mean a real update with really nice new features yeah why not pay so if we update from 3.x to 4.0 thas ok but not from 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 that we be really stupid, anyway you would need to pay for a major once a year, so 10 buck once a year is not bad.

All those freaking out about the "missing features" aspect of this, isn't that likely just to cover the possibility that future versions of the iPad will have hardware improvements (much like the iphone line saw (GPS, MMS, Video, whatever)) that would allow some software features the current editions simply won't be capable of? (like the much whined about, but unnecessary camera).

I highly doubt they'll be holding back the "ball-scratching" app just to be douchey.

      I have an iPhone 3G. There's video recorder on 3G...Voice Control...Everything works...On 3G.
On the contrary, they're going to do it to be douchey.

Probably would only cost about 10 cents, but they have to make up losses from all the thieving software pirates

So what I think Apple should do to justified charging for new Major Update is to give it a name like Snow Leopard mobile or something that sound new and hot and that people feel that need to update.
