  • Toshiba To Provide New iPhone With 4" Retina Display?

Earlier this year Toshiba and Apple struck a deal to build a $1.19 billion production facility to manufacture LCDs for Apple's iPhones. The facility was supposed to begin manufacturing LCD's in the second half of 2011.

Fast forward to today. Toshiba confirmed in a press release a number of technologies it would be show casing at the Society for Information Display Conference running May 17 to 19. One of those technologies? A 4-inch 720p retina display.

Displays for Mobile Phones and Portable Electronics
The mobile section of the booth will feature high-resolution LTPS displays, up to 367ppi (pixels per inch) resolution density, in sizes ranging from 3.3-inch to 4.0-inch with resolution formats ranging from Wide VGA (480 x 864) to HD (720 x 1280). In addition, these displays will demonstrate advanced technologies such as high-contrast (up to 1,500:1), high-color (up to 92% NTSC), and wide viewing angle (up to H/V 176/176). The displays are just a few representative examples of TMD's broad line of thin and light displays for mobile smartphones and other portable electronic devices.
The startup date for the plant, coupled with the ability to produce a 720p retina display in form factors ranging from 3.3" to 4" makes for a mighty coincidence. Especially with the number of rumors pointing at an edge to edge 4" display (pictured in a mockup above) being used in the next iPhone. Like mentioned yesterday, look to the supply chain if you want to know what a product may look like before its release.

That being said, until Apple decides to unveil the next addition to the iPhone family we're all just drawing conclusions from crap we think we know. I wish someone would just leak photos of the final device already.
