  • Teen Arrested For "Terror Threat" at Apple Store

According to a report in The New York Post, a New York teenager has been charged with threatening to blow up an Apple computer store in a deadly suicide bombing. The "threat" was typed in a Stickies note on the screen of one of the display computers in the store. The young man said the note was a joke, but authorities are taking it seriously... and he may be sentenced with up to seven years in jail if he is convicted of the crime.

Jason Barry, age 17, went to the Apple Store in the Staten Island Mall on Monday and typed a note on a display computer that was either a stupid, insensitive prank or a chilling threat. Barry told police it was a joke when he wrote "I have threatened your store and all its employees with a bloody death" and that "the innocent citizens that walk in will be eliminated." The authorities say it was a serious threat that they could not ignore.

"Although this defendant claims he was joking, a letter threatening to inflict ‘a bloody death …’ is no joking matter," said Staten Island District Attorney Daniel Donovan. "There are serious consequences for this type of reckless behavior. In the post-9/11 world, especially in light of recent terrorist plots against our country, behavior of this type must be taken seriously."

The note was left on the Mac's screen, and authorities were notified upon its discovery. Witnesses who were in the Apple store at the time identified Barry as the note's author, according to the district attorney's office. Barry was arrested at home soon after, and was arraigned in Staten Island Criminal Court on the charge of making a terroristic threat - a felony offense which carries a potential jail sentence of up to seven years.

Barry signed the note with the name of the father of one of his friends who was with him at the store. His parents posted his bail on Wednesday afternoon.

That seems to be the main problem with all these comments. The apple fanboys are flipping out thinking some microsoft fanboy was about to blow up their precious.
This has absolutely nothing to do with where the threat occurred. A threat is a threat, and when innocent lives are at stake, it is taken seriously. If a 17 year old boy stood up on an airplane and yelled he had a bomb and then laughed about it, the air marshall would still arrest him and he would be convicted of a terrorist threat. I remember kids calling in bomb threats at school in Middle and High School, why? They thought it was funny and it would get them out of class. But it was not treated as a joke, it was serious, the school was evacuated and the kids were always arrested and convicted of a bomb threat. The Department of Homeland Security has to treat every threat as a serious threat, it is zero tolerance. Think back to recently when that little nigerian boy tried to blow up that plane on Christmas Day. They had received several warnings about him previously but never took any threats seriously. Go further back to Columbine and the trench coat mafia. No one took them seriously either until it was too late and all those kids were killed in cold blood. You have no idea of what people are capable of. No rational or normal kid or adult walks into any store and leaves a threat of that nature. The kid is troubled and bottom line needs to be dealt with accordingly. Therapy, prison, jail, psycho-evaluation, I dont care! But this was a serious threat no matter where it occurs. Do not be immature and pull the "Fanboy" defense on us. A threat is a threat and that is all.

Sounds like you should move to one of the following places...
      List of current communist states
States who currently declare themselves to be Marxist-Leninist.

      * People's Republic of China - (Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó) (since October 1, 1949)[1]
      * Cuba - Republic of Cuba (República de Cuba) (since January 1, 1959) [2]
      * North Korea - Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk) (since September 9, 1948) [3] (see Constitution of North Korea).
      * Laos - Lao People's Democratic Republic. (Sathalanalat Paxathipatai Paxaxon Lao) (since December 2, 1975)[citation needed]
      * Vietnam - Socialist Republic of Vietnam (Cộng hòa Xã hội Chủ nghĩa Việt Nam) (officially in unified Vietnam since July 2, 1976, but in the north since 1954) [4]

Our rights are being kicked around enough without the communist garbage like you around... You should be tarred and feathered for even thinking you have the RIGHT to open your mouth about everyone else's RIGHTS!!!!! As for the kid yea he should be punished, but 7 years is to extreme it will do nothing but turn him into a criminal.

I love you Melech, but as far as Columbine goes, the "Trench Coat Mafia" was actually proved to be nothing but a media lie as well as 95% of what was reported about that awful day. I will try to find the FBI report that was FINALLY released about it in early 2009. I do agree with you about Christmas Day though. Many warnings were there and look what happened, he got on a plane. In addition, EVERY threat of massive damage needs to be investigated. After the investigation, if this boy has no prior history of being a scumbag, I don't see the point in imprisoning him. Sure he's a scumbag, I just don't feel imprisonment is the answer. Prisons are NOT meant to be a punishment. If I put on my Facebook page (which I don't have) that I think someone should kill President Obama, I WILL get a visit from the Secret Service. Once it is deemed that I'm just an idiot with no threat potential, my name gets put on a long list and it gets dropped.

What's worse is all those kids in that library were killed while the police were on the premesis and standing around outside. That tragedy could have been much smaller if the damn cops had done their jobs. I blame the police just as much as the two kids that shot them. Same goes for VT. Cops found two kids dead from gunshot wounds and no gun, yet they didn't even notify the proper people and those people didn't do what they should have.

You take every threat seriously. Every threat. This kid should be picking up trash on the highways for a long, long time and should be on probation for at least a few years. At the very least. This kind of crap should NOT be tolerated no matter what the age is of the person doing it.

I would feel the same way if he wrote this on a dry erase board of a school supply store.

Actually he does not, not in public place where the words incite panic. Like you can not yell fire in movie theater when there isn't one.
I can not believe all the people here think freedom of speech implies freedom to say anything anywhere. How about I get in front of your house away and yell all kinds of offensive words to you and your family, then scream freedom of speech when you call the cops.

Actually, you have freedom of speech, but they are limited. Your example fits that category.

Give it a rest. I don't suppose anyone here did anything stupid at age 17???

Cops should be trying to catch actual criminals rather than some pimple faced kid with a sad sense of humor.
