  • Mopho DJ Turns iPhone Into Vinyl

    File this under amazing.

Nicholas J. Bryan and Ge Wang, students at Stanford University, have developed an application that turns your iPhone into a piece of scratchable vinyl. Instead of using time-coded vinyl to manipulate your digital music catalog through a program, the application uses the accelerometer and gyroscope of the iPhone, while attached to the turntable, to manipulate the desired track.

With proper processing, a three-axis accelerometer and gyroscope can detect three-axis rotation rate (pitch, roll, and yaw velocities) ideal for sensing motion on a turntable. As a result, by attaching a properly equipped mobile phone atop a vinyl record, an existing analog turntable can easily be modi ed into a digital scratching interface requiring no specialized sound card.
The paper goes into detail describing possible innovations to the art of the scratch. The touch interface of the phone can add an interactive and visual feedback component to the performance. Being able to display information on the phones screen, including markers for beat juggling, have the ability to make mixing records infinitely easier and at the same time more complex. Traditional mixing involves placing stickers on vinyl as markers (high-tech I know).

The most inventive idea presented in the paper is that of "air scratching." Taking the iPhone or smartphone off the turntable and manipulating the record while interacting with the audience. Liberating the DJ from behind his tools, his tables and mixer, is something most have never even dreamed about.

As a DJ myself, I don't see this supplanting the traditional method of record manipulation (someday perhaps), but it is ideas, and innovations like this that continually amaze me. These small devices in our pockets, and sitting on our laps, truly possess a daunting amount of potential we still have yet to tap.

Excuse me while I bust a move.

Serato/Traktor without the box & leads. Unfortunately, buying 2 iPhones is a more expensive option as opposed to the tried & true forms of digital music control out there now.
Having said that, this really blows me away, it looks sharp, to be able to scratch properly you have to have 0 latency, this looks close.
Well done guys, this is really impressive

Nice work indeed, but let's not encourage DJs in any way, shape or form. Okay?

There are endless ways to use an iPhone these days.

"breakfast in bed, with a BJ, and a hot cup of java..... There's an app for that".

What's next??? Let's keep the ball rolling!

Hopefully the app won't crash and get you fired from the club as their DJ.

Sometimes less is more. Stick to the traditional DJ methods.

This isnt even a forum- but you need to install SBSettings from Cydia, slide across the top of the screen- click on more - click on SBSettings options - and turn the statusbar free mem slider to on.
