  • GeoHot Offers to Fix iPhone WiFi Problems - For $10,000

GeoHot has declared the blacksn0w/blackra1n WiFi bug "closed," saying that after his investigation he believes it to be a problem with the iPhone firmware itself, rather than his work. On Twitter today, he made a statement suggesting he could fix the bug for $10,000. Most observers, though, are interpreting this as a tongue-in-cheek offer coming as it does in the wake of his smackdown of Jody Sanders' offer of $10,000 for the 3.1.2 baseband unlock.

Several separate Apple support forum threads address a persistent problem users have had with WiFi connectivity since the time of the 3.0 firmware release. The issue has manifested as a complete inability to connect, even from very close to the WiFi access point, to intermittent or permanent disconnects.

I’m using a 3G iPhone, and upgraded to 3.0 yesterday. Since then I’ve been unable to join any wifi network at all.
The wifi dropping has been driving me nuts. It’s only started since 3.0. Before, it has always stayed connected, never had conflicts on the network, and was never an issue. But since 3.0, like a lot of others, it can’t hold the connection for more than 20 seconds without releasing.
I have exactly the same problem. Wifi drops when the phone sleeps, and needs to be reset by toggling the wifi on-off switch. Scanning for the network is also flaky. It worked perfectly prior to installing the update. We need a fix, Apple!
Before updating, Wifi worked flawlessly; at times even better than my macbook’s.
After the updating, my iPhone does not discover my networks anymore. I have made it recognize my home network, however, by getting closer to the router. But since distance has never been a problem, it definitely shouldn’t be now.
As many users noted the issue after upgrading to 3.1.2 and subsequently unlocking and/or jailbreaking their iPhones, there was a concern that the hacks themselves could have introduced a problem. After seeing the volume of complaints from users of stock iPhones, however, Hotz concluded that his hack was not at fault.

Though workarounds from resetting network settings, to enabling/disabling Airplane mode, to putting the iPhone in the freezer for a minute (thus voiding the warranty) have been suggested by the user community, there is as yet no official fix from Apple for this issue... other than returning your phone to an Apple Store for replacement.

[QUOTE=Conas;5028396]I say Geo should fix it for free, but he should rig it so that only jailbroken phones can reap the benefits of the 'patch'. Then we could go to the Apple forums and brag that our jailbroken phones work and their stock phones don't. Muwhaha ;-)

That would be hilarious, i think that would be great

To all those who say it would be awesome if he worked for Apple... good for him but bad for us. Everything he does now would be an extreme contract breech.

wow, geohot is kinda an egotistical jerk... i dont know why you people like him when its the dev team's work that we should trust and rely on since they actually test a product before releasing it... I understand ill get flamed by half of you for this but i have been an iphone jailbreaker and unlocker form the start and really respect the work the dev team does and wish that geohot would work with them instead of putting his face all over his buggy jailbreak software begging us for donations....

If he works for Apple, say good bye to his jailbreak/unlock solutions... besides, I'm sure he makes more than 10k with donations... do you have any idea how many thousands of ppl use his software and donate?? I guess we will neer know, but good for him so he keeps coming with solutions

It would be bad if apple made him in their team, geo has got the skillz to be able to stop jailbreaks forever, and maybe even mess up people that have jailbroken already to force them on the offical firmware. that is of course if they payed him enough.

Thank YOU! Finally someone said this. Definately don't want his ego on my iPhone...I will use his hack only cause I have too, and I'd thank him, but I really am tired of everyone and their ego pumps inflating his already oversized head.

      Oversized? How so?

The guy solved jailbreaking/unlocking problems that nobody else in the world could solve (at those respective points in time). Hell, he rivals the entire devs-team combined. He may be a little flamboyant/narcissistic about it all but I do believe he's earned that right. Hell, Jody's $10,000 didn't even dissuade his "oversized head"!

Your dumb too, he does not beg for donations. He said if you want to donate here is the button. He does not demand or make you pay for it so whatever, do you have an unlock or jailbreak code that you wrote? Do you spend HOURS, DAYS, AND WEEKS devoted to iphone hacking? STFU!! Idiot.

I do appreciate what Geohot does. The guy is brilliant and contributes a lot to the jailbreak community. However, I do prefer the dev team method. They do seem to come out with the most stable jailbreak/unlock solutions.

I think all parties involved all have an ego. One ego to sell you an item that you can never truly own and another ego that says "I can hack it for free." By the way, 10.6.2 update is available. Why aren't we discussing that? This geohot tweet was a few days ago.

My last phone did this exactly as described right after updating to 3.0 right out of the box without jailbreaking. I had to get it swapped out. It would not even list most (usually, any) WiFi access points even when in extremely close proximity.
