  • iPhone 4 Supplies Quickly Diminishing Globally

"Launch Day" has finally arrived and it shouldn't come as a surprise that the lines are longer than the supplies (check out MMi's launch gallery to see for yourself). That's what we're hearing from scores of readers and understanding based on the early accounts from many others.

For hours now it has been reported that entire nations have virtually depleted their entire iPhone 4 stock, with the UK, France, and Japan chief among them. As this YouTube video from outside Apple's Regent Street, London store this morning proves, getting your hands on this device may not be as easy as once expected.

What's true abroad is also true at home for Apple. The in-store availability of iPhone 4s could be completely decimated before the end of launch day. With demand for the iPhone 4 outpacing the initial demand for the iPad by enormous leaps and bounds, it appears the first 600,000 units preordered will ultimately prove just a drop in the bucket for total sales when all is said and done for iPhone 4.

For some prospective but still empty-handed buyers, there was a glimmer of hope today when some reports surfaced that Wal-Mart would, in fact, have some iPhone 4s in store on launch day. Unfortunately, despite the frenzy that set in on Twitter and the foot traffic that resulted in Wal-Marts within hours, most iPhone 4 seekers were heartbroken to learn that many Wal-Mart stores only stocked one or two of the devices so far. Not one or two cases - one or two actual devices. Yes, only two iPhone 4s.

As reported this morning by CNN Money, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and RadioShack had previously suggested that iPhone 4 walk-in purchases might not work out so well on launch day. After all, only 1,500 of the 3,600 Wal-Mart stores in the US are even offering the handset today. These extremely limited supplies at incredibly scarce outlets have frustrated and confounded Apple fans like few other product launches ever have. Of course, the shortages aren't limited to Apple stores and Wal-Marts. "Inventory remains constrained, and it is expected that many of the iPhones that Best Buy receives will go first to customers who reserved one during presale," Best Buy warned on the eve of launch.

According to AT&T, demand for the iPhone 4 has already proven 10 times higher than it was for the iPhone 3GS. And, for the most part, there's video to back up that claim.

so I'll have to wait like the score of other MMi users before a jailbreak is issued in order to really enjoy this device.

The screen is GORGEOUS though... too bad the available cases are sh*tty.
Only if its possible to jailbreak the hardware, might not be.

So Far the only way a new bootrom device can be jailbroken is via a userland jailbreak like the one from by Comex. Those are few and far between, and likely the one used for Spirit is thoroughly patched.

The reason im still holding onto my 3GS. I need 3gUnrestrictor, and things like shrink. I suggest everyone do the same, the ip4 jb might not ever happen.

Got mine!! 32GB Black in all it's glory. I waited in line 3 hrs at the Apple Store in Braintree, MA at the South Shore Plaza. All in all, I'd have to say it went pretty smooth. I've had pretty good luck on getting defect free iPhones. I do not have any problems with the screen, no discoloration and no scratching as of yet. My battery seems fine, it's half now with pretty much constant use today, pics, vids, internet audio, etc. I also have had no issues with making calls while holding the phone. I have all the right bars in all the right places as usual.

I wanted to get friend who's there to pick up one for me. He's coming back there today. I won't hassle him if there's no stock left obviously.

EDIT: just found out no stock.

Haven't seen it yet but I take it just as per the Walmart issue, Best Buy won't have any either right?

Just got my 16gb. Got in the reserved line at the Seattle store at 5pm and was walking out with my phone at 5:45. They were still selling non-reserved phones at that time as well. Amazing that considering when I went by there at 6:30 this AM the lines for both reserved and non-reserved were absolutely insane. Man the new OS on the new phone is super fast and the screen is amazing. No antenna issues as of yet that others have reported.

KC, Kansas- Arrived at apple store @ 6am, moved approx 10ft every 2hrs. 4hrs in we were told only 32GB left, 20mins later there were none left. 5 mins after that UPS arrives 1 trillion hours later a police officer in the store is selling me my phone and activating it. Finally leave the apple store with a beautiful 16GB at 9pm. And 15hrs later i'm too tired to play with it to figure out if it was all worth it haha!

Why do u have to pay 1000 bucks for the iphone 4 32gb?
      Doesnt the non-commitment or no-contract iphone 4 32gb cost $699?
After paying that amount, do u have to activate a new at&t line since im a non-at&t user?
If yes, then do I have to pay anything additional?
Also, can I cancel that line (if forced to activate) without paying any termination fees?
Finally, can I purchase the non-commitment iphone 4 32gb online?
      Thanks, in advance.

I was soo lucky last night to get one at the Apple store by just walking in. I was there just to get a case for my wife's phone when she asked if they had any left and the employee asked on what size did I want. And I was huh? Are you for real? I guess if you didn't pick up you're pre order the same day, they can sell it to anyone right before the store closes.
