  • iOS 4 Goes Live

    It has arrived.

    Apple has released iOS 4 and the full slate of new features that come with it. As a result, the new iOS has sent iPhone lovers into a frenzy. And not without good reason. Compatible with iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and the most recent iPod touch, iOS 4 will now come preinstalled on the iPhone 3GS, in addition to the 4th generation iPhone, on tap for a Thursday release.

    To prep for the update, be sure to upgrade to Tunes 9.2 and similarly update all your apps. In recent days, a wave of updates have befallen the App Store.

    The 2009 iPhone 3GS and current iPod touch model will see a host of new bells and whistles. Some of the features you're about to start enjoying:

    * Multitasking
    * Folders
    * iBooks
    * 5x digital zoom
    * Tap to focus video
    * Home screen wallpaper
    * Spell check
    * Wireless keyboard support

    Shortly after Apple rolled out the new iOS, Version 1.1 of iBooks (now available for download) turned up, essentially making the app available on any iPhone or iPod with iOS 4. Best of all, while the iPad won't have the new iOS for a while, the new app does benefit iPad owners by bestowing the ability to open and read PDF documents and save them to the virtual bookshelf.

    EDIT 5:13PM - As of yet, there is no public jailbreak or unlock for iOS4. The Dev Team have repeatedly been letting us know the last few weeks it's all able to be jailbroken and unlocked, so your best bet is to hold on updating a few days while they finish testing on the actual release version of iOS4.

    Keep an eye peeled here, we'll let you know as soon as there's a public jailbreak and unlock for iOS 4.0. ultrasn0w already unlocks basebands through 05.13.04 as of today, so all we need is the iOS4 jailbreak solution to be made public from the Dev Team.

      Trust me when I say the 3G barely can handle multi-tasking alone. Wallpapers literally kill whatever little RAM you have left. Apple's implementation is good but it was clearly made for devices with 256mb+ of RAM.

      FYI iBooks will not work at all if you're jailbroken.

      from the GM build to the official 4.0 i've notice a lot less freezing, well in fact none at all, and i hope none for good. Game Center is not here.

      Game Center is not coming out until later this year. Not a single game supports or will support it for a while until Apple gets everything ironed out.

      There is literally no point to have Game Center. At all.

      So can anyone make it clear to me why it would be necessary to upgrade the iPhone 3G?

      I am seeing no benefits or perks for it with the newest firmware.

      Either way, I'm just super content that I finally got my iPhone 3G 3.1.3 unlocked! Such a long wait... But patience brought us unlucky ones back to peace.

      what you describe has happened to me several times with the MMS feature being gone or there but not working, it's one of the first things you should check when you restore and jailbreak your iPhones, if it is gone or not working, simply making a restore as Pat Bateman did... 99% of all issues with the iPhone can be solved like this, thus making a quick test of all the important features after any restore can potentially save you hours of time!

      I find it funny how Apple says Jailbreaking makes the battery drain faster. I updated my iPhone 3Gs to iOS 4.0 and after a days use I am finding the battery to last at most 1/2 as long. Usually I get to play some games that will eat up the battery and I would not even break below 40% battery by 11PM. I am at 6:30 PM and played no games today and my battery is already 17%.

      When I was jailbroken I had many things that ran in the background but I never had my battery affected like this iOS 4 has done.

      Is this just me or is other people having the same issue?

      ok guys i have a problem, updated to 4.0 and my 3g didnt work and wouldnt back up my data so i restored it and tried to load my old backup files but most of the items are lost like contacts, mms, and notes, pictures and music and videos i got it backed up to date but those contacts were more important any way i can do a full back up and get all my stuff back?

      @iN2K where you jailbroken before your upgrade, if you were, was it in a stack, hidden, docked on SBSettigs or in a category?

      I was seeing a very large affect to my battery on 3.1.2 from the jailbreak even when I wasn't using backgrounder and now on iOS 4 I'm seeing the same problem. Jailbroken on 4.0 might make it drain even faster for me. I'm on a third gen iPod Touch.
