  • HD Radio Coming to iPhones?

I'm old enough to remember when people thought AM-FM Walkmans were cool. Now Apple seems poised to take a step back to the future with a new patent that suggests HD radio tuners will be coming to future iPhone and iPod models. AppleInsider has details of the patent, and also notes an earlier report about Apple being in talks with iBiquity, the makers of the HD radio iPhone accessory.

The patent application, “Digital Radio Tagging Using an RF Tuner Accessory,” describes how IOS devices could scan through HD stations and organize them based on the quality of the broadcast and/or specific kinds of content. "Enhanced metadata" would allow users to select through available stations for the kind of music or other content available at that time and - since this is Apple - tag tracks for later purchase over iTunes, similar to how songs that play on the iPod nano's FM radio can be tagged. Ford's in-dash HD radio also has an iTunes-tagging capability.

iBiquity came out with an HD radio receiver for the iPhone last year, complete with an app to control it. The $80 uses the headphone wires as an antenna for the tuner, and purports to offer coverage where streaming services like Pandora cannot go. At that time, the Wall Street Journal claimed that Apple and iBiquity were in talks to incorporate their receiver in iPhones and iPods.

I really like the idea myself. Some stations only stream using a flash plug in...and we know where that's going. And for new buyers, it allows them to listen to the radio without burning up your precious data, not to mention you don't have to worry about buffering, or being out of range of those wonderful towers.

Why complain about more features? And look at it like this...if I'm listening to the radio via the FM tuner instead of streaming over AT&T's network, then I'm freeing up bandwidth for all you data sucking whores!

I don't think that many in the US realise that FM radio is pretty standard in most phones in Europe and Asia. Remember, the market for the Iphone is larger outside the US.
With the recent withdrawal of Unlimited data contracts, it becomes even more useful. HD radio or DAB "Digital Audio Broadcast" as is it is called outside the US is a natural progression from FM tuners. When I go jogging in the morning I like to listen to the radio and end up taking two devices.

I am lost as to why some of you didn't understand Sziklassy's post.

Like him, the only time I'm ever not in range for Internet radio is when I'm in a car on a road trip and am currently in the middle of nowhere. Was it really that tough to infer?

A HD Radio in the iphone would ROCK, everyone don`t live in the city, thank God. Out here, being able to pick up your local radio would be great when you out running or what ever.

Using the headphone wires for the antenna is not a good thing for A2DP users.
