  • Sold Out! July 2nd New iPhone 4 Ship Date

Fewer than twenty-four hours have passed since preordering began for the 4th generation iPhone. Already, the supply has been virtually decimated - a reality that, according to at least one published report, became evident as early as 1:30pm PST Tuesday.

And just imagine how many prospective buyers would have actually pulled the trigger on the new iPhone today if servers hadn't exploded and otherwise melted down at the moment of truth. Nonetheless, we at MMi hope for your sake that you managed to get your order in. Otherwise, all new orders will now be subject to a new ship date - July 2nd.

AT&T's response, as chronicled by our friends at BGR:

Because of the incredible interest in iPhone 4, today was the busiest online sales day in AT&T history. As of Tuesday afternoon, customers who preorder iPhone 4 moving forward will receive their device on June 25 or later, depending on when the order is placed. We’ll email customers with confirmation once their order is placed, and again when it ships. In addition, we will have devices available on a first-come, first-serve basis in our stores beginning on June 24.
If you're looking to preorder a white iPhone, you're really out of luck, as Apple has even asked Best Buy to stop accepting preorders for the white model.

As it stands, AT&T will notify customers via email with confirmations of order placement and eventual shipment. Unfortunately, AT&T will only have a limited number of new iPhones on hand come launch day (June 24th) on a first-come, first-serve basis. So serious are the supply issues at AT&T that the carrier has even temporarily blocked iPhone 4 pre-orders from employees. Nonetheless, it now appears that it will take some time for supply to catch up with the demand - overwhelming demand, that is.

Last week, we reported that Robert Lai, chairman of Asia Optical, revealed that his company has been turning out some massive shipments of VGA lens kits for the updated iPhone's front-facing video camera since last month - enough, in fact, to place a monthly production estimate at three million units. Despite what was believed to be a swollen inventory of new iPhones, the initial batch apparently wasn't sufficient.

And, as a result, getting the 4th generation iPhone could very well take longer than many of us had hoped.

I hear what you are saying. I just think that every year they have a greater and greater demand. So even when they up production, it still isn't enough to keep up with the demand. Apple also prefers to keep stock low and send the public into a frenzy trying to get their product.

It was only for the first 1,000? Wow I feel special because I got one!

Well if you compare the massive change from the 3GS - iPhone 4 to the 3G - 3GS, then you'd see why. Add that to the millions of early upgrade eligibility, a drop in the data plan price and you've got yourself massive sales.

Lol, apple wipes the floor with google every year with theyre release of an updated iphone. Google wishes they had production issues like apple every year because those issues or fails as you note them equate to $$$ (in lay mans' terms, Profits... sweet sweet ungodly unfathomable profits). Although apple, not ATT (att has nothing to do with the production side), has production issues for the new iphone isnt a cause for the Fail stamp because any company in the world would kill for this type of dilemma. Basically, these "Fails" should ALWAYS be expected for events such as these.

guess it depends on your definition of "right". i think selling out of a ton of iphones in less than a day says they did something right. i know i'm happy...put my order in early and have one on the way for the 24th. totally excited.

Got my order in around 4-5ish this morning, was up with the baby.
I just so happened to go to Att website and saw the new little text "pre order"
      yay!

I didn't really think it was up yet, but it was!
And after I ordered it, Att sent me a email saying that preorder could be placed now.

So I guess I beat the mass email to people/big rush to the ATT site

I would lean more towards Google is thinking about how the hell they can pull this off. Demand for the iPhone goes up each year. So it is hard to prepare when the bar keeps getting put higher.

At least this provides better showing of demand than Sprint did with Evo sales stats. Then got caught with their real totals.

No, he is just stirring the pot. There is no metallic version of the iPhone 4. "Dust Busta" is adding his $.02 since he wants to freak people out also. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.
