  • Are Hopes for a Durable iPhone 4 Shattered?

The new iPhone 4 isn't even available yet and already there are many blogger pundits pronouncing the updated Apple smartphone the "least durable" iPhone ever released. Within the last twenty-fours hours, photos have surfaced across the web depicting a shattered 4th generation iPhone. And if comments posted to many gadget blogs beneath the photos are true, a good number of prospective iPhone 4 buyers may not be so fast to purchase the new handset in fear of it being a veritable "shatter magnet."

But is that label for the new iPhone fitting or even deserved? Here's where the speculation was born. The fix-it gurus at "iFix your i," an increasingly well-known online presence that assists with Apple product repairs, claim to have obtained original iPhone 4 components. Got that? It isn't actually the new iPhone. It's a makeshift product using iPhone 4 "parts." Once fastened together - minus the circuit board, etc. - the team played a home-game version of Myth Busters and repeatedly dropped their creation in order to test how it handles impact.

The photo above shows the iPhone after three drops. It survived the first two without injury. The third strike (a drop from an elevation from 3.5 feet) proved sufficient to shatter the glass housing. This "evidence" seems to contradict the claim from Apple that the new iPhone is made from a chemically strengthened form of glass that is some "20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic." Naturally, the photos released by iFix your i have rattled some folks.

Even though the experiment is far from scientific, a mock iPhone 4 shattering so easily certainly isn't good news ahead of the product launch later this month. But we won't really know for sure how much of a glass-jaw, so to speak, the new iPhone has until the masses put some wear and tear on a device that Apple maintains is the most durable iPhone to date.

i have a crack in my bumper on my less than one year old car, sucks for me, but i should have been more careful on what snow i drove over this past winter. catch my drift.

My 2g 8GB iphone(soon to be retired for a 32GB iphone 4) is 3 years old now and always had it protected with a DLO rubber case protector(no screen protection) and so far it looks and works as good as the day I bought it from the apple store.....looks brand spanking new. But then again I'm a take good care of your stuff kind of guy.

why the hell can we invent a ceramic that can stop a bullet, but cant figure out how to design a shatter proof screen for electronic devices, just sayin...

Mmi i really like how you lure people in clicking on your articles by nice titles like these. People don't even bother to read that it wasn't even the iPhone but just a case. You put a huge paragraph and then the truth at the end. Way to go.

wasn't for my HP Elitebook Tablet.

fell from about 3.5 feet onto one of it's corners on a hardwood floor.

corner has a small dent, but everything works just fine.

      thanks, HP.

      Great Writers MMi

The glass parts are actual parts -- and they're the important ones to the test at hand. It's not as if they tried to conceal their methodology. It may not be 100% true to life as with the final model, but its still going to be relevant.

How could they? Oh, you mean they nought from an unreliable Chinese third part parts manufacturer?
So im SURE they also got the pcb board, a4 CPU, battery, etc that all ties the entire phone together didn't they?

Oh what? You say that all they did was get unreliable possibly same parts, slapped them together with some screws with some sights in to make it the same wieght as a real iPhone 4?

Ok then so go ahead and skip the iPhone. assume apple didn't consider build quality abd there will be one less person in line on June 24th

First of all, what did Gizmodo have to do with this? I found that confusing.

Second of all: Guys, when Apple says "magical" they don't mean it *literally*. It's not literally made of magic. It still follows the same rules of physics you've come to know and love, and that means that the glass still does indeed break. Being scratch resistant doesn't make it shatter proof.

Actually they said it was as "hard". Hardness dictates vulnerability to scratches, not shattering. A material can only be scratched by something harder than itself.

That said, it is only 1/4th as hard as Sapphire. A sapphire will scratch the **** out of your iPhone, I guarantee it. They lied or exaggerated or whatever. It wasn't the only time they did that, either.

but can crack and shatter really easily, much like a car window.
And this is indeed very similar to Gorilla glass which is an alkali aluminosilicate glass ceramic.

It's a strictly case design of the iPhone.
Whether it be real, or fake, take it for what it's worth and move on.

      Notice the makeshift components?
Wait until it comes out, and people are having hundreds of success stories of it dropping w/o cracking, and sob stories of them dropping it and it cracking.

      Bottom line-
Just buy a case if you're prone to drop it, if you're not prone at dropping it, don't worry about it..
I find your opinions to be reasonable -- and that makes me me angry.

Maybe the real deal absorbs shock a bit better with the internal layout being different. Maybe you have to drop it from a few feet higher up before it shatters. Who knows? The underlying fact, however, is that glass is still glass. The real iPhone screen *will* potentially break when you drop it. Apple has not invented or nor have they claimed to have invented a glass that is simultaneously shatter proof and thin enough for this phone. If you came away from the promo video thinking that this was a phone that you could safely drop and not worry about the glass potentially breaking, you were mislead or mistaken.

Adjust your expectations accordingly and prepare yourself with whatever accessories you may need depending on your level of butterfingeriness.

If you want to be anal about it fine.
Search for iPhone 4g and you get 27,000,000 hits.
I did delete all the language packs and launch demons, but something is eating up the memory even though there is only one active theme running in Winterboard.
SysInfo reports only 4 processes running.

It looks like a sales pitch for their repair service to me. They probably hit it with a hammer several times and claimed it was a drop on concrete. I have dropped my 3 GS several times, face first onto the pavement and never had it break. While working ambulance, I'll put my iphone in my lap and forget it and then step out of the ambulance and there it goes!

they're not using actual APPLE parts....you know those replacement parts are always generic parts with licensed trademark symbols on them. Like a bumper on a brand new factory mercedes will be more seemless and perfect that a generic mercedes bumper. Anyone grabs one sour note to hold onto an focus on it to shift negative attention towards the product. It's like the video that went viral to EVERY BLOGGER when Steve Jobs had a problem with the WIFI. They took that little piece and made it seem like it was the ATT network or the phone itself that messed up....but not the fact that 500+ people were live blogging every breath he took. Besides...if you drop your phone hard three times then get a friggin holster...what are we 6?

      2 things to say.
      FORENSICS anyone?
this phone was HIT not dropped.
With my few years of experience and the pictures posted, this phone has been hit hard with a sharp instrument, hit pretty hard with a dull instrument, and pressed very hard in the center to get the concentric wave breaks in the center.
      NEXT
CASE MATE made an awesome case that could be slightly modified AFTER purchase to fit the 4G (yes noodle boy, I did say 4th Generation) iphone and it is still available with CUSTOM artwork, curtesy of your KIDS.
      Recession iphone case anyone?
now quit laughing, and get back to work.

If you are laughing, hit thanks!
