  • O2 Announces iPhone 4 Early Upgrade Plan

Even though UK pricing hasn't been announced for the iPhone, O2 has followed AT&T in the US by cutting a deal for current customers who want to upgrade. The carrier is announcing a sort of grace period where customers can upgrade after paying a fee for each month remaining on their contract. The normal 14-day "change of mind" guarantee does not apply with this offer.

For the first month the iPhone 4 is available from O2 - starting June 24th and continuing through July 24th - the offer will allow current customers get out of their contracts by paying 20 for each month remaining. There is a separate arrangement for "Priority List" customers, who don't have the option to pay down contracts: "Platinum" customers can upgrade 6 months early, while "Silver" and "Blue" customers get moved up a whole month.

O2 customers can also get an upgrade by switching to a pay-as-you-go contract, but they'll have to pay off the rest of their contracts in full. There's an early upgrade calculator on the O2 website for anyone having trouble figuring out what in this complicated scheme they're eligible for. Expect Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile to offer their own upgrade deals, possibly with incentives for switchers. Must be nice to have actual competition...

And is it a case of just bunging a charged, restored iPhone in the bag? Or do they want the box with all of the accessories? I'd asume you send in the phone, they evaluate it, make sure it's working/not damaged etc, then send you a cheque or money into your bank.

I could be tempted to sell my 16GB 3G to that phonerecyclebank.com site. 205 is a damn good price for a 2 year well used phone. It would mean my 32GB iPhone4 would cost next to nothing!

I'd wager that the iphone4 prices will be very close to current 3GS prices. Once the iPhone 4 arrives, 3GS prices will drop to 3G prices and 3G will be no more...

O2 have just released their smartphone tarrifs. The data allowance is really low!

ok, so in my general / settings / usage I have sent 42mb and received 540mb...

is that in total or since my last charge? i updated to 3.1.3 recently so i'm worried that it is based on the past 2 weeks and that these data plans are ridiculous. I only use it for a bit of home pc streaming, youtube etc

Yup that's two weeks worth bud. When you upgrade firmware, it resets usage statistics etc.

500MB cap is rediculous. I'm probably going to get the 30 24month contract and get the extra 500MB 5 bolt on. Either that, or argue to stay on my current tarrif which is 500txts/600mins/unlimited data.

sheesh... i understand why they are doing this ( as evidenced by their press release: http://news.o2.co.uk/Press-Releases/...model-2a3.aspx ) and that "97% of users" only use half of this allowance... but it kills the point of an iphone and o2 especially when you can't even get on bloody 3g in the centre of the capital

In that case, I'm going to argue that "I'm part of the 3% that uses all of the allowance, so up mine back to unlimited you thieving beggars!"

OK, I'll admit, most of my data is MyWi tethering so I can't really argue my point very well with O2 haha

i wonder how many will jump ship or if this is all just momentary shock and awe...

60 youtube clips in a month sounds like loads, but in combination with all the crap that gets pushed to your phone, emails and general surfing it starts to look worrisome.

guess this means we won't be able to 3gUnrestrict our facetime calls

A lot. trouble, I can't see anywhere else doing any better. Orange offer "unlimited" but that's still only a 750MB fair use. Still, better than 500MB and what can they actually do if I download 1GB instead of 750 when it's advertised as unlimited?
    1. sunbeam83's Avatar

That's the conclusion i came to re: Orange tariff... they don't seem to list usage charges outside of your contract. So if you were to go over as you say, I don't know what the penalty would be.

Looking at my usage overall, I need a tariff that no one seems to offer. I use data above and beyond my minutes/text allowed. I've never once come close to my 600mins/month or 600 txts/month. Maybe in light of this I would be best on the cheapest of cheap tariffs with a 500m bolt on each month.

I feel like I want to leave o2 purely out of spite

I have unlimited data plan on o2 simplicity sim only, although they text me one month to say I was over my data quota and if I didn't reduce my usage they would cut off my data! When I spoke to customer support, the "Unlimited Plan" actual produces a warning text if you go over 250mb in a month, and if you exceed 500mb you get a written warning - if you then exceed 500mb in another month they will force you to upgrade to a 1gb plan for 15 per month extra.

So the Unlimited Data Plan has never been unlimited on o2.

I don't doubt that has happened to you, but looking at my usage for the past week I have used 312mb in just 3 days and 540mb since I restored 2 weeks ago.

Is there a chance that your sim only tariff is markedly different from my payM unlimited tariff?

Might pop out to my o2 shop to ask what's going on

I'm on 20 iphone simplicit. with 600 min, 1200 texts, unlimited Internet & wifi. I do use Internet a lot, so was annoyed when I saw the 500mb limit. The new tariff is unlimited texts, I don't want bloody unlimited texts, I don't use what I've got. :-(

Wtf, that data allowance is really low and the iPhone 4 is even more expensive than last year?

Hurry up and release the Payngo prices so I can preorder! However if iPhone 4 16GB is more than 550, I shall not be buying it, I think...

It means those are your data limits per month based on what tariff you are using. Cheaper 30pm tariffs give you 500mb data usage, 60pm tariffs give you 1gb data usage.

The CEO of o2 says this: "if you go over your data limit and don't buy a Bolt On then your data speed will gradually slow down. You won't be charged further."
