  • It's "iOS" Now

Calling it "the most advanced mobile operating system in the world," Steve Jobs announced at WWDC 10 today that the next revision of iPhone OS will be called "iOS 4." With a new name that reflects the spread of the operating system from the iPhone to the iPod touch and now the iPad, iOS 4 went Gold Master today with what Jobs said were 1,500 new features. The upgrade will be available for the iPhone 3G, 3GS, and the iPod touch on June 21 - free for the first time to iPod touch owners - and will be preloaded on the iPhone 4 when it ships three days later.

The marquee feature of the new OS remains multitasking, and Steve Jobs showed off Pandora streaming in the background as he checked his mail during the keynote address. Mail now has a unified inbox for multiple services, as well as the ability to show sequential messages with the same subject line as threads. Apps can now be organized into folders, which can be moved, renamed, or kept in the Dock. In a first for the iPhone, Microsoft Bing is now a search option along with Google and Yahoo, though Google remains the default - for now.

Jobs also spent a fair amount of time highlighting the new iAds mobile advertising network that Apple is launching with iOS 4. iAds, Jobs explained, combines "the emotion of TV with the interactivity of the web" and will let users "explore ads" (really?) without being hijacked out of their favorite apps."

iOS 4 will not be available for the first-generation iPod touch. And though it can run on the 3G, it will not support multitasking.

It'll prob be hell to run multitasking on the older devices since it'll eat the battery so quickly but yes indeed thank the jailbreak community.

no the upgrade is talkinga bout ios 4 not iphone 4 why would they do that? This quote is saying that only these devices will be able to upgrade their os from 3.x and for the ipod touch if its your first time upgrading i think then you get the upgrade for free, otherwise you have to pay for ios4

so is there no ipad os update?

Haha, the naivity of some people ceases to amaze me. Enabling multitaking on the 3G is not as fun it sounds. It eats up your battery, faster that a fat man at a pie contest..And as for performance, I can tell you, it's laggy as hell. You are better of using Backgrounder/ProSwitcher, it's got a better interface too!

Apple is updating their website as I write this. Maybe the iOS will be available to devs when they are done ;-)

Did he talk to Cisco before dubbing the new version 'iOS'?
Or is he just stealing that from them like he did the 'iPhone' name?

Apple licensed iOS with Cisco pre-emptively this time around I believe. Read it on engadget I think

If/when a jail break is released for the iOS 4 I will be upgrading to an iPhone 3G[S] and jail breaking it.

Any talk of a iOS 4 jb yet?

Well since the GM was released to devs today you can bet they are looking into it to see if current jailbreak methods work. The iOS4 (beta) has already been jailbroken. Now it is a matter of seeing if the GM has closed any holes from the previous beta builds.

EDIT: My main concern is if this time around we will see a smooth Cydia (and current jailbreak apps) transition from 3.x to iOS 4.x. Devs now have two weeks to get the main Cydia (jailbreak) apps working well on the GM iOS 4.x.

The ice has broken and we have release dates and not all devices are getting iOS4, so it would be nice if the unlock was available to the 3.1.3 locked iphones so they can be used.

Not everyone wants to or knows how to/about jailbreak.
