  • iPhone 4 Redefines "FaceTime"

Steve Jobs had "one more thing" for us all today at Apple's 2010 WWDC. As we all sort of expected but were thrilled to see confirmed nonetheless, the 4th generation iPhone will deliver video chat capabilities. Although the widely anticipated name - iChat - won't be utilized, "FaceTime" provides the same, much-anticipated functionality - the ability to place and receive video phone calls.

"The video and audio quality is great," said Jobs, demonstrating the impressive look and sound to the video chat function on the iPhone 4. Broadcasting to the live audience a Sam Mendes-directed commercial that will likely have millions in tears before it's all said and done, the video chat component is depicted helping a hearing-impaired man communicate with his family through the new iPhone. Punctuating the emotion of the video, Steve Jobs noted that "this is one of the moments that reminds us of why we do what we do."

Not surprisingly, however, with the burdensome data demands already incumbent upon the AT&T cellular network, FaceTime will first be available as WiFi-only. As it stands, expect this limitation to remain in effect for the duration of 2010. Jobs observed, to a response of audible chuckles from the crowd, that they have to “work a little bit” with carriers in order to get 3G video calling enabled. Luckily, there is no set-up and it appears both the front and backside cameras will be functional during chats.

Can we make it an automatic filter at least? And add iPhone HD to it as well.

Yeah I'm going to agree with Posiedon79 about the "iPhone 4G". it looks pretty ignorant when ppl still put that even after Apple just announced that it's the iPhone 4. No "G", just the number 4.

I'm going to go ahead and coin the nickname "el cuatro" and refer to it from now on as such.

That said, el cuatro is going to own.

I would not be surprised if Apple show us left and punch with the right. I mean a very hard jailbreak or new boot loader. I don't know I have a feeling that those guys who put effort in to jail-breaking the ios 4 may be disappointed along with us

For someone like Steve Jobs who is so against port on the iPhone, why in the hell would he put video chat. Hasn't he seen Chat Roulette?

Facetime really isn't a great feature if you have to call iPhone 4 to iPhone 4. I bet there is a large percentage of people who don't get that and will be mad when they don't have anyone to play with.

Skype is gonna be huge once it gets the video going.

What the iPhone 4 really needs is 4G! When the heck is that gonna happen on a widescale basis??

I agree with the iPhone 4 + unlimited data plan + 3G Unrestictor = good times. I bet ATT gets rid of unlimited data plans within 2 years

Lastly, I'm headed to South Africa tomorrow and won't be back til June 25. I give it a 25% chance the jailbreak will be out by then, if not by July 4 for sure, but what do I know. I'm just iPhone4 . . . . . idiots

AT&T got rid of unlimited data plans June 7th actually. Any new customer can no longer get it. It's not legal for them to take it away from existing customers so they are all "grandfathered" in. 4G for AT&T is a LONG way off.. and if you do some research top of the line 3G is faster in some cases than the current Spring 4G network so the advantages are null and most of it is a marketing ploy.

Really, that can't be true. What I'm saying is not that they take it away, but when it runs out they say sign the new contract or find a new carrier. That can't be illegal. Especially when they see stats like the top 2% of unlimited data plan users are taking up 25% of the bandwidth. Not sure what the numbers are, but I'm sure there are bandwidth hogs out there downloading things all day long on 3G.
