  • Was Your AT&T Upgrade Eligibility Moved Up?

I had been planning on waiting for my AT&T upgrade credit, due in August, before getting a next-generation iPhone (iPhone HD? iPhone 4G? iPhone 2010? iPhone IV: Afterlife?), even though I knew I'd want one at approximately 2pm Eastern Daylight Time on June 7, 2010. I'm getting a 64GB, and without credit those are going to be pricey. Plus there's the looming Early Termination Fee, which should be low based on the twenty-two months I've had my beat-up 3G, but who wants to spend more then they have to?

So I called AT&T on Saturday asking for the exact day my credit kicks in, so I can budget. They painfully-nice lady at Customer Service nicely informed me that I have upgrade credit now, today: two months earlier than anticipated. Sure enough, when I go to "myWireless" it tells me that "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." And the nice AT&T lady said they'd waive the upgrade fee... which is also what shows up when I call *639# from my phone. Sweet!

I chalked it up to the standard AT&T screw-up, just in my favor for once. However, according to posts at MacRumors and AppleInsider this morning, many customers are reporting the same thing. It's not clear yet whether it's a major screw-up, or a great deal AT&T is giving its customers but declining to publicize for some reason.

Perhaps we'll hear an announcement paired with the iPhone A4 unveiling later today. But if you're an AT&T customer, dial *639# and see what your upgrade eligibility is.

So, because I can upgrade this year, but my contract is so new, I should be able to get the phone on the 24th? I am still very new in the iPhone world, so I am a newbie in all of this. I've never bought a phone on launch date (or shortly thereafter). How long does it normally take for ATT to update their systems for those whose dates are changing? Is there a date where if things don't change for me they won't at all?

If you started your plan 6months or more, and you pay more than 70 for your primary line, you can get the iphone 4 for your primary line. Yes. I think thats what your asking.

p.s i thanked you for no other reason than trying to quote you

I only got one of my 5 lines upgraded early. So looks like I need to pay 200 more for each phone...

Does anyone know if I pre order it online on the 15th will it be shipped to me or will I have to pick it up in the store on the 24th?

Like lambs to the slaughter. Wake up and see the light, ATT wants to lock you in before the Iphone is made available on an alternative network.

Because ATT has pushed a lot of upgrades back for this. I think all customers with iPhones that are do for upgrades within 2010 get pushed back for the iPhone 4 release.

I am a good sport..... but I already contacted AT&T on facebook and this is what they said....

"We want to help customers upgrade to a new device as quickly as possible – exact timing can depend on several factors unique to each account (length of contract, payment history, etc.) For iPhone 4, existing iPhone customers who are upgrade eligible between today and the end of this year would qualify for our best pricing today.

      1. Been with AT&T since the iPhone
      2. NEVER been late on a payment
      3. My payments are over $150.00
      4. Can't think of any other reason that I could not upgrade.
      5. Was able to upgrade every year since the iPhone.

It worked last year maybe someone needs to make another facebook page like last year and petition this and then maybe they will let everyone that has had the iPhone since last year buy at the upgrade price.

As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee.

That's the message I get. Weird. I've only been a customer since November 09. So dies that mean I get the discount?

Normally for a single line or the primary line on a family plan, your monthly charges for YOUR LINE are greater than $70/month which would put you eligible in 2010, and as of today eligible immediately because of this advancement.

Standard upgrade rules have been (for charges on your line):

$99 or more on your line is usually upgrade every 12 months.

$69-$99 is usually upgrade at 18 months (if I'm not mistaken)

$69 or below is usually 21 months.

(above applies to iPhones, for other phones the discounts differ a bit.)

So I would assume you're on a family plan and you have a secondary line with total billing charges of about $40 per month FOR YOUR LINE. Am I right?

I'm in the same boat. My wife's line has the plan, the $30 unlimited family texting, and $30 data plan putting her line at about $120 making her eligible every 12 months.
My line is $9.99 + $30 data plan = $40 putting me at 21 months.

As a result, so far the only option I have is to pay the full 'no-commitment' (aka no subsidy) price of $599 (on a $199 iPhone).

Last year they did a 'early upgrade' discount for people in my situation giving me 1/2 the discount ($200 less than no-commitment/$200 more than the full discount.) But it seems this year they did something different which was to move up anyone in 2010 to full upgrade status now.

I'm hoping this is an oversight and over the next few days they'll extend some kind of discount to us not able to upgrade until 2/2011. Last year there was an outcry from customers that were confused by the situation and angry that they would have to pay $600, and AT&T adjusted it. This is another one of those confusing situations.

I don't believe anyone is 'entitled' to any kind of upgrade. But what they did with the 'early upgrade' seemed like it worked reasonable well for those left out in the cold and I hope they do it again.
I'm in that boat and here's the problem with it:

When you have a 2 line Family Plan you save 10 dollars a month over paying for 2x basic talk plan. You have pooled minutes, but you fewer combined minutes. So you lose a few minutes, but you save $120 dollars a year -- except now it turns out you end up spending an extra $200 dollars to upgrade both phones than if you just had 2 Separate account, so now that Family plan is costing you an extra $80 dollars. Whoops.

Thought you were gonna save some money? Well AT&T showed you.

But it's basically dumb the way they try to say one line is paying $90 a month and the other is paying $40 and so one earns its upgrade way faster. If they'd just split it up in a more logical way both would have upgrades.

So now, being in the same boat, I'm confused as to what to do? Call and raise a fuss? Split my family plan into two accounts and hope the dates change? Pay the ETF and start a new 2 year contract for full subsidy (ETF Is less than the extra $200 dollars it costs to upgrade -- which is also quite stupid)?

Yes, that's an option too, I suppose. I can pay AT&T ~$115 dollars to end my contract 1 year early and then buy new phones with full subsidy on a new contract($200 each) or I can keep the contract and get full subsidy on one, and pay 400 for the other. So it's like AT&T is paying me 85 dollars to end my contract? Ok, I guess you pay a $36 dollar activation fee instead of an $18 dollar upgrade fee, so maybe you only save $70 dollars. Still, the whole thing is *dumb*.

AT&T needs to do some rethinking.
