  • Was Your AT&T Upgrade Eligibility Moved Up?

I had been planning on waiting for my AT&T upgrade credit, due in August, before getting a next-generation iPhone (iPhone HD? iPhone 4G? iPhone 2010? iPhone IV: Afterlife?), even though I knew I'd want one at approximately 2pm Eastern Daylight Time on June 7, 2010. I'm getting a 64GB, and without credit those are going to be pricey. Plus there's the looming Early Termination Fee, which should be low based on the twenty-two months I've had my beat-up 3G, but who wants to spend more then they have to?

So I called AT&T on Saturday asking for the exact day my credit kicks in, so I can budget. They painfully-nice lady at Customer Service nicely informed me that I have upgrade credit now, today: two months earlier than anticipated. Sure enough, when I go to "myWireless" it tells me that "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." And the nice AT&T lady said they'd waive the upgrade fee... which is also what shows up when I call *639# from my phone. Sweet!

I chalked it up to the standard AT&T screw-up, just in my favor for once. However, according to posts at MacRumors and AppleInsider this morning, many customers are reporting the same thing. It's not clear yet whether it's a major screw-up, or a great deal AT&T is giving its customers but declining to publicize for some reason.

Perhaps we'll hear an announcement paired with the iPhone A4 unveiling later today. But if you're an AT&T customer, dial *639# and see what your upgrade eligibility is.

y does everyone feel so entitled to an early upgrade? you all signed 2 year contracts pretty much knowing a new iphone would come out a year later. I have 1 line thats eligible early and 1 line thats not. I think its a pretty good deal for 399 anyways. Sell your 3gs and you will probably break even if not make money.

Many feel they are entitled for a early upgrade because many have bought iPhones and nine months later they got the upgrade, some at twelve months and some at six months. Why shouldn't everyone feel they are entitled when people with accounts like this are getting the early upgrades? AT&T has not been consistent with their upgrade policies.

And its $499.00 as anyone that will have to pay for the upgrade will probably get the 32 GB not the 16GB.

Does anyone have any information on the unlocks for 3.1.3?

I have tried the *639# call about 100 times now and I keep getting the same response:

We're sorry. Requested information is currently unavailable. Please try again later.

Anyone get the same information? Am I just hosed? I have a 3G.

I don't think they are done with whatever they need to do (They being Apple, right?) to change people's upgrade dates. I've also been checking mine at least 10 times a day. I kept getting the message saying I had to wait until July. Sometime last night, the date changed to now. I did get some times where I got the same message as you did. Could so many people be checking things out that it's causing a problem?

I just started with at&t jan 2010 with 3gs single line. I am not eligible at the nice upgrade or new pricing for the iphone 4. Can I add a new line to my existing plan for the iphone 4, then when the phone arrives switch it to my existing unlimited data line and number and switch my 3gs onto the new line, then cancel the new line?
I also got my 3GS in January but I am eligible. It's because of the way AT&T does eligibility, I am on a family plan combines bill and for wireless I pay about 222 dollars.... AT&T calculates based on how much you pay, how many lines, and your contract.... If you add another line and get an iPhone 4 and switch the sim after cutting it down you could do it... But if you try to cancel the line im guessing they'll take the iPhone 4 back too unless you pay 599 or just do an early upgrade for 399 without all the trouble.... Actually wait till like the day before launch and see your eligibility.... Maybe

People complaining that they "hate att sooooo much!" Realize, your not entitled to the super cheap pricing...secondly, att is doing everyone a favor (to themselves as well but...") to give early upgrades, otherwise you all would not be getting the pricing so stfu!

Lastly, this iphone isn't so great. If you have a 3gs the only difference is a better screen, a bit faster, and a makeover. That is it. Alot of the "new" things is coming on the ios4 which when jb on a 3gs you can do just as much. So unless you whining about having another useless camera that you will pay 400 for...you shouldn't be handling money in the first place.

Theres another iphone coming next year to, so if you can grab your d!ck and hold out for a year, youll have an iphone upgrade that will actually be very different.

This is exactly what people were talking about iphone 3GS when it out came out last year.
      "The 3GS isn't so great compared to the 3G - it's just a bit faster - a bit make over" and bla ... bla ... bla ...

so if we are elegible for the partial discount, is the 16gig then 399.00? I may end up just paying that and selling my 3gs online
    1. aimetti's Avatar

any current customer ( dont even think it has to be a an iphone user ) can upgrade for the partial discount as long as you extend your contract for 2 years. And yes 16 gb is 399 at that price.

I just sold my 2G on ebay for $200. My 16GB 3Gs is also up for sale, currently sitting at $250 with a day to go. I've seen 16gb 3gs's recently go for $350-550 on ebay. Hopefully mine will go up a bit but at least I have my $399 i4 covered now! Now I need it to go up a bit more to cover a new case and screen protector!

@rubberneck: Just last Thursday, I put my slightly used 16GB 3G on eBay with a "Buy it Now" only price of $350 and it sold within 8 hours. Just shipped it out today. It was on 3.1.2 unlocked from AT&T and jailbroken. It even had some light scratching on the chrome bezel (which I very clearly explained and photographed). I'm gonna hang on to my 32GB 3GS until next year and sell it on eBay for $350 to pay/help pay (depending on my upgrade price) for the next iPhone. Besides, I'm used to having two iPhones at all times just to be able to play multiplayer games with friends/family members that don't have an iDevice.

Just found out my eligibility was moved up and i bought a 3gs a couple weeks after its release. I have a 3g 16gb with a chrome red case that's essentially brand new and a 32gb 3gs thats used but in excellent condition.

Im waiting for ios4 and its unlock/jb to sell it to get more money. Both come with a ton of extras like cases, screenprotectors, etc. Anyone know what i can expect to get for them on ebay?

Ive seen lately cause the new iphone prices have dropped but how dramatically? Im looking to get ~700 for both, is that too much or maybe i can get more? Anyone else sell their devices lately that can shed some light? Thanks.
