  • Was Your AT&T Upgrade Eligibility Moved Up?

I had been planning on waiting for my AT&T upgrade credit, due in August, before getting a next-generation iPhone (iPhone HD? iPhone 4G? iPhone 2010? iPhone IV: Afterlife?), even though I knew I'd want one at approximately 2pm Eastern Daylight Time on June 7, 2010. I'm getting a 64GB, and without credit those are going to be pricey. Plus there's the looming Early Termination Fee, which should be low based on the twenty-two months I've had my beat-up 3G, but who wants to spend more then they have to?

So I called AT&T on Saturday asking for the exact day my credit kicks in, so I can budget. They painfully-nice lady at Customer Service nicely informed me that I have upgrade credit now, today: two months earlier than anticipated. Sure enough, when I go to "myWireless" it tells me that "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." And the nice AT&T lady said they'd waive the upgrade fee... which is also what shows up when I call *639# from my phone. Sweet!

I chalked it up to the standard AT&T screw-up, just in my favor for once. However, according to posts at MacRumors and AppleInsider this morning, many customers are reporting the same thing. It's not clear yet whether it's a major screw-up, or a great deal AT&T is giving its customers but declining to publicize for some reason.

Perhaps we'll hear an announcement paired with the iPhone A4 unveiling later today. But if you're an AT&T customer, dial *639# and see what your upgrade eligibility is.

I just started with at&t jan 2010 with 3gs single line. I am not eligible at the nice upgrade or new pricing for the iphone 4. Can I add a new line to my existing plan for the iphone 4, then when the phone arrives switch it to my existing unlimited data line and number and switch my 3gs onto the new line, then cancel the new line?
You can open a new line and get the full commitment price on the iphone 4 and you can then cancel your plan and put the phone on your old plan however you will be paying a $350 ETF. Add that to the cost of the phone $200 as well as the activation fee $18 and you really aren't saving any money. A jan 2010 account should qualify for a partial upgrade(if you plan costs enough) and partial pricing for a 16g is $400.

well Here's my situation and what ATT said when I called to bitxh tonight:

      Been with ATT since 98
Family Plan - iPhone not primary
      Corp Disc.
      Purchased 3GS July 09
      Eligible for upgrade on 3/18/11
      Bill is $156 a month

I called to see if they could move up my eligibility to get the 199/299 pricing. Rep tod me now that I culd get the early upgrade for 399. I said no get a manager on the phone. He tells me the exact same thing that there are over 150 different criteria for the eligibility to be moved up. I said so me being a customer since 98 and spending over 150 a month doesn't help me out and he said no. He told me there was no way for them to alter my date in their system, I think this is BS and will call a friend in Vegas tomorrow who is a mgr at an ATT cust. service center. The mgr did say that I should recheck my upgrade eligibility on the pre-order date and on launch date to see if it gets moved up. You guys think they will deploy more accts early eligibility?

OK Update to my post above. This is a question posed by CNET to an ATT rep, my situation exactly and probably some of you out there as well.

Let's say that I have an iPhone 3GS. I'm not eligible for an upgrade, but my husband who is on my family plan and has an LG flip phone is eligible for an upgrade. Can I use his upgrade to get a new iPhone 4 for $199 or $299 for myself?
This is tricky. Technically, the answer is no. The upgrade is only for the subscriber whose contract is expiring. But a way to get around this is to "replace" the old LG phone with the iPhone 4. Then you can switch the phone numbers and continue to use the LG phone and reduce the service on that line.

So I'll try to do this and then I can give the wife my 3GS and I can get the 15$ data plans on both lines and my bill will remain the same. This way we're both happy

I had also been told from ATT that they can't manually change a date in their system. I also wonder whether more people each day are having their dates changed up until and through the 15th. I don't want to get my hopes up because I don't want the particular one I want (32GB white probably) to be temporarily out of stock when I can current upgrade on July 2nd, just 8 days after the release date.

Has anyone had any luck getting their dates changed by talking to a rep? This is rediculous. I wish i had stayed on my own account bymyself, now im under the family plan

Your upgrade elegibility has to do with more than your contract expiration. It has to also do with how many lines, how much you spend every month (because it would pay off the unsubsidized price faster) AND your contract. So if you have 1 year left to your contract and spend $65 a month your less likely to get it than the person who spends more, even if they have more contract left.

That's the message I get. Weird. I've only been a customer since November 09. So dies that mean I get the discount?
this is what I want to know, I get the same message does this mean I can get a 32GB iPhone 4 for $299?

      any help would be appreciated

this has nothing to do with it. I spend 300 each month, 5 lines, 4 years with AT&T and they only gave me my primary line to be upgraded. I have tried it all, If I didnt want my unlimited data I would have cancelled being military and had the fees waived then resigned but they finally got me with the data cap

Did you do the online tech support for that? Because my upgrade circumstances are different from most other users, I would love to try the chat out, too, but it did say tech support only.

Ok just left the ATT store along about my situation I posted earlier. I can use my wifes upgrade(primary line) but he said that it would hbe to ne upgrading from and iPhone to the new iPhone. My wifes line is not an iPhone so I won't get the 199/299! This is rediculous! He'll I'd sign a new 3 yr with them to get the best pricing, wish that was an option....

who cares about an 18.00 dollar fee, thats nothing! all we want is the discounted price. God i HATE ATT with a passion. I wish tmobile or verizon carried the iphone. I would love to see ATT loose 50% or more of their business for being the jerk offs they are

That will work since the friend wants an iphone instead of keeping his Blackberry.

If people are thinking they can use a family members or friends upgrade eligibility to get an iphone4 for themselves, they need to understand that the "friends" line will have to be upgraded to an iphone data plan.

For example, my wife is eligible for an upgrade but is currently on a Blackberry. I cannot upgrade her account and get a discounted i4 unless she switches to my 3Gs and picks up a iphone data plan. Which she isn't going to do
