  • Was Your AT&T Upgrade Eligibility Moved Up?

I had been planning on waiting for my AT&T upgrade credit, due in August, before getting a next-generation iPhone (iPhone HD? iPhone 4G? iPhone 2010? iPhone IV: Afterlife?), even though I knew I'd want one at approximately 2pm Eastern Daylight Time on June 7, 2010. I'm getting a 64GB, and without credit those are going to be pricey. Plus there's the looming Early Termination Fee, which should be low based on the twenty-two months I've had my beat-up 3G, but who wants to spend more then they have to?

So I called AT&T on Saturday asking for the exact day my credit kicks in, so I can budget. They painfully-nice lady at Customer Service nicely informed me that I have upgrade credit now, today: two months earlier than anticipated. Sure enough, when I go to "myWireless" it tells me that "As a valued customer, we can offer you an upgrade with a new 2-year commitment and an $18 upgrade fee." And the nice AT&T lady said they'd waive the upgrade fee... which is also what shows up when I call *639# from my phone. Sweet!

I chalked it up to the standard AT&T screw-up, just in my favor for once. However, according to posts at MacRumors and AppleInsider this morning, many customers are reporting the same thing. It's not clear yet whether it's a major screw-up, or a great deal AT&T is giving its customers but declining to publicize for some reason.

Perhaps we'll hear an announcement paired with the iPhone A4 unveiling later today. But if you're an AT&T customer, dial *639# and see what your upgrade eligibility is.

So far, my date is still July 2nd. I'm going to give it until tomorrow morning and if it hasn't changed yet, I will talk to someone in a retail store. It's only about 10 days so I am hoping it can be changed.

Im out of the country but want to know if im eligible.

I know other lines on our family plan are eligible for an upgrade, but can i use that upgrade to get the iphone without buying another iphone plan since i will be using it on the line with the plan already? Will att allow that? If so count me in, if not I got my 3gs around its release time, would i qualify?

Any help to those who can log onto their account on att would be appreciated. Idk my password so i cant log onto my account myself, nor go to att store since im in africa =/

Maybe they're offering it since there will be additional news regarding new carriers? Lock in as many contracts possible before the bomb is dropped?!?

Mine was thankfully pushed up too even though I bought a 32gb 3GS at launch. I would've bought this phone anyway even at the sorta discounted upgrade price! I have to have this iPhone!

I should also add that I've been a happy AT&T customer for nearly 15 years now. They'll pretty much do whatever I want whenever I call and ask.

@Norcal I preordered from AT&T last year and got my phone on my front step on launch day so I'll be doing the same this year. Just order online. And preferably the same day preordering starts to make sure you get one on launch day! These may sell out faster than any iPhone before it.

thanks Cory, I appreciate it, this will be my first iphone and im stoked.. so the 15th it will pop up on att to pre order?

The 18$ upgrade fee goes for anytime you buy a new phone with the upgrade price. IT could be a iPhone or a dummy phone it is added. Being nice to a store person can waive it most the time. I talked to the ATT guy today because I went in to get the new data plan. He said my account is not eligable for the upgrade discount of 199/299 till Jan, 2011. But he said to come in shortly after the release and he will try to move it up for me. Otherwise I will have to pay 299/399.

I laughed cause when I walked into the ATT store today the guy came out of the back and saw me and said "What do you want now? We weren't expecting you till the 24th." Think I go there to often. He showed me some of the other phones that are coming out today and tomorrow that they just got in.

The "Everyone gets to upgrade" thing that they announced today is only for people who would have been eligible for an upgrade before Dec 31, 2010. I know they also implied that anyone who got one at launch last year would also be eligible. But I think they left out the details.

Normally for a single line or the primary line on a family plan, your monthly charges for YOUR LINE are greater than $70/month which would put you eligible in 2010, and as of today eligible immediately because of this advancement.

Standard upgrade rules have been (for charges on your line):

$99 or more on your line is usually upgrade every 12 months.

$69-$99 is usually upgrade at 18 months (if I'm not mistaken)

$69 or below is usually 21 months.

(above applies to iPhones, for other phones the discounts differ a bit.)

So I would assume you're on a family plan and you have a secondary line with total billing charges of about $40 per month FOR YOUR LINE. Am I right?

I'm in the same boat. My wife's line has the plan, the $30 unlimited family texting, and $30 data plan putting her line at about $120 making her eligible every 12 months.
My line is $9.99 + $30 data plan = $40 putting me at 21 months.

As a result, so far the only option I have is to pay the full 'no-commitment' (aka no subsidy) price of $599 (on a $199 iPhone).

Last year they did a 'early upgrade' discount for people in my situation giving me 1/2 the discount ($200 less than no-commitment/$200 more than the full discount.) But it seems this year they did something different which was to move up anyone in 2010 to full upgrade status now.

I'm hoping this is an oversight and over the next few days they'll extend some kind of discount to us not able to upgrade until 2/2011. Last year there was an outcry from customers that were confused by the situation and angry that they would have to pay $600, and AT&T adjusted it. This is another one of those confusing situations.

I don't believe anyone is 'entitled' to any kind of upgrade. But what they did with the 'early upgrade' seemed like it worked reasonable well for those left out in the cold and I hope they do it again.

yea im gona call and complain about this. Its not fair that people that got the 3gs months after the release are elegible for upgrades

Shockster, I think the early upgrade is for those whose contract ends in 2010, rather than someone who is eligible to upgrade this year. Normally I would say that is the same thing, but in my case, it's not. I just went postpaid in March, but had 15 months of Pick Your Plan prepaid with ATT before then. My contract is only 3 months old, but I can upgrade on July 2 (18 months and one day after I started PYP). It's looking as if my date won't change. I'm not happy about that - it's only 9 days. What's the big deal?

You need to realize that ATT's "Cherry picking" is based on not only when you last upgraded but other things such as customer loyalty.

I got my 3gs day of and am technically not eligible, but since i have 5 lines (iphone not primary) and spend about 300 a month and have been with ATT since it started day one with cingular and pay m bill on time every month etc. The head of the branch near me put me in the 12 month upgrade field to get the iphone 4.

Complaining wont get you anywhere. But calling to find out if your are eligible or not is ok. If not explain the above reasons (if they apply) and you should get some leeway in their decision.

If your eligible to upgrade before 1/1/11 or contract ends before 1/1/11 then you are eligible for the upgrade pricing as well

      has any one noticed this,

my main account is eligible for an early upgrade now. My wifes still says 5/4/11. However all the prices listed on the upgrade page reflect full discounted prices?

Looks like both my lines are eligible?

Then your primary one is up for an upgrade every 12 months and the rest every 21 months. Im sure one may be due for upgrade unless they are all 3gs...in which case those n your evo you must have some cash so stop whining

Anyhoo, talk to a rep and see if they can bump you like they did me. Im sure your bills more than 300 so if worst comes to worst you threaten to leave costing them almost 5k a year, if still no go, then to hell with at&t get them unlocked n go to tmobile.
