  • How Much Will The 4th Generation iPhone Cost?

A prominent industry analyst is taking a swing at what the new iPhone will cost when Apple formally introduces the 4th generation version of the popular handset at the company's 2010 WWDC in early June. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is predicting that Apple will roll out a 32GB model of the 4th gen iPhone at $199 and a 64GB model for $299.

While few other industry analysts have formally weighed in on the estimated cost of the new device, these estimates (which are on par with the current prices of the 16GB and 32GB models of the iPhone 3GS) are certainly in line with most Apple fans and prospective 4th gen iPhone buyers are expecting.

Munster also sees in his crystal ball that the new iPhone will hit the marketplace shortly after its June 7th introduction and possibly be available by the end of next month. Although the Piper Jaffray analyst will likely be close to his target estimates with both the pricing and release information for the new handset, Munster isn't necessarily proposing any suggestions that haven't already been floating about the rumor mill.

Overall, since the infamous lost/stolen iPhone fiasco earlier this year, few secrets have remained about the attributes the 4th generation iPhone will boast. But notwithstanding the lack of mystery, hype remains greater than ever for the updated iPhone's big reveal, likely on tap for Apple CEO Steve Jobs' keynote address at the World Wide Developer Conference, scheduled to begin June 7th in San Francisco.

I don't think anyone is saying that. We are saying we want a comparable discount, at the very least. If a phone is $600 retail (in theory) and a 2yr contract brings it down to $300, it would make sense for ATT to throw their (loyal) customers a bone and offer a $600 (retail) phone to a customer who has had their "old" iPhone for a year for $450. As high as the cheapest lans are for the iPhone, ATT is still making tons of profit AND they are supposed to be upping the ETA fee. I view it as smart business. Why alienate your clientele, especially when a large percentage think the service is crap? (for the record I am not one of those, and I think most of such complaints are unwarranted, especially comparing apples to apples, but they exists nonetheless.

I'm telling you there will be 3 models of the 4g....a 16gb, 32gb and 64gb. They need to keep the 16gb on sale at a lower price for the "older" folks that only keep the beatles greatest hits and stuff on their phones. 32GB will be the most popular and 64GB will be for the nerds....like myself.

Hey you try to cycle your 32gb 3Gs every week to make space for new songs and movies....

when the 3g went from 8gb / 16gb to the 3gs 16 gb / 32gb respectively the price stayed the same. Most would expect the same now.

not to mention the ipod touch already has 64 gb, not a huge deal here.
That's the same flawed logic this "analyst" is using. No. This time there is more than a simple CPU speed and memory bump. In addition to the second camera, flash, better battery, etc, there will likely be a DL speed increase too (AT&T's "3.5G" HSPA+). All of iPhone OS 4's features will not be accessible to iPhone and iPhone 3G, so there are even more potential upgraders, especially due to aging batteries. Mark my words: 16GB, $199, 32GB, $299, 64GB is only possible in the future and/or at a higher price.

Neither you nor the analyst seem to account for the fact that an "in the wild" 4th gen iPhone HD was already seen with only 16GB. That's pretty damning evidence right there and it just so happens to fit my reasoning.

according to many outlets, Toshiba 64GB Nand chip was announced in Dec 09, appears to be in HVM and ready for delivery.
Toshiba Set to Roll Out 2Xnm-node 64Gb NAND Flash Memory -- Tech-On!

In the past readings, many articles have pointed out that the iphone/ipod touch have enough room for 2 large non system chips.
iphone uses 1 for storage and the other for telcom
ipod touch can use both for storage.

My wife lost her ipod touch today. It maybe cheaper in the long run to upgrade my phone to the 4G and hand down my 32GB 3Gs to her than buy a new ipod touch.

I hope Steve's promises that the 4G will be a huge product intro will stand true.
After all the 3Gs wasn't really that big of an upgrade, unless the device was jailbroken with themes running.

Well I think if you hang around certain bars long enough you'll find one of the iPhones and get it for free, but you MIGHT have to give it back...

How do I get a job stating the obvious? Yes, every year the base amount of memory doubles. We went from 4 -> 8 -> 16 so 32 seems pretty obvious. Moreover, we went from 16 gigs as the top end on 3g, to 32 gigs top end. If 32 becomes the bottom end, it seems pretty obvious we'll see that pattern also continue with a 64 gigabyte version for the top end.

And we've also seen in previous years that the price remains the same for base/top-end models despite having their memory doubled.

The only obvious thing that the analyst forgot to mention was that the 16 gigabyte 3gs would probably be dropped down to only $99 while the 3g would be phased out entirely.
