Other Shoe Drops: Wal-Mart 16GB 3GS for $97
According to CNN and other sources, giant US discount retailer Wal-Mart Stores will cut $100 off the price of the 16GB iPhone 3GS starting tomorrow. (UPDATED: The phones at this price apparently are only available as in-store purchases, not online - thx random tipster!)
With a two-year contract, Wal-Mart buyers can now get a 3GS for the same price as an 8GB 3G: $97 - two bucks cheaper than AT&T charges for the 3G 8GB.
CNNMoney reported on a statement
by Mehrdad Akbar, Wal-Mart's senior category director for wireless, that the cut was made because "it is our commitment to always lead on price." There's no hard data indicating a fall-off in purchases of iPhones ahead of the expected June rollout of the fourth-generation model. However, Apple alleged as part of its complaint against Gizmodo that the website's revelation of the new model would hurt sales.
Wal-Mart began selling the iPhone in late 2008, and sold the low-end 3GB and 16GB 3G models for $2 less than AT&T and other retailers like Radio Shack. There's no word yet on whether the other retailers will drop their prices, but it's likely only a matter of time.
