  • iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4 Arrives

Two weeks after iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 3, developers will be busy digging through Apple's new release of iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4. On a rather consistent track record, Apple has been dishing out updates lately, the bi-weekly update comes as no surprise. Apple also sneaked out a Ma OS X 10.6.4 for Developers along side this release as well.

And of course to no surprise, there are no documented changes that come along with this, so we'll have to wait for developers to leak out any changes they find along the way.

Gizmodo has noted that this update seems to begin to take advantage of the folders and uses them by default now. The clock, calculator, compass, and voice memo apps are now sitting in a folder called Utilities. Makes sense, I kinda like that. Unfortunately I don't have access to the beta, so I will depend on you guys to dig further into the new update.

iPhone OS 4.0 should be available "this summer", and one can only assume that a jailbreak will follow a few days/weeks afterward. Older devices will unfortunately not be compatible for the update, but there has already been rumors of people porting the OS over for backwards compatibility. Nonetheless, this still even means the old and some new devices, will not be able to use all the new features added.

Any of you guys who have access to the Beta, please let us know if it's getting more stable.

Umm from the looks of the screenshots on the first post they appear to be stock mac wallpapers just sized for iphone. And they are pictures for crying out loud.. I love how uptight yall are about this kind of stuff when we are jailbreaking iphones and unlocking them left and right...

I know Apple prob won't put it in but you can already rotate home screen and it looks iFine sb rotator will allow you to rotate your summerboard. To fix the "look" it has an option to shrink icons when rotated. You can set it to rotate your wallpaper but I dx that function.

I would love for this to happen just like it works on the iPad.

lol sometimes it's a necessity. And I usually only do it while at a stop light or something. And don't think i get distracted, im almost always the first one moving as soon as the light changes. I've never had a wreck and only one speeding ticket. SO yes a little texting in driving isnt that bad. At least im not texting, putting on make up, playing with the radio, and going 15 below the speed limit like half the women on the road..
Doing anything that takes your eyes off the road for .5 of a second or more is wrong. Just because other people (women putting on makeup) do it, doesn't make it okay. I hate to be preachy ('cause i don't like that either) But risking your life (and everyone on the road around you) is just plain retarded. Every year it seems there are more idiots killing themselves and others for doing everything but driving behind the wheel... Just don't do it in a public place that can put me or my family in danger. I don't mind dodging mortars or gunfire, but I DO mind me or my family getting killed by someone who couldn't wait to respond to a text while driving. /rant off/

They REALLY need to build at least a quick reply into the SMS popup, if not go a step further and make a quick send also.

With the advent of multitasking, I suspect Apple would argue there is no need for this anymore since the state of your current app will now be saved when you switch to the messages app.

If that's the only improvement you desire upon 4.0 then you sir are completely under utilizing your phone!

YES! By far my most missed part of jailbreaking.

That is not the same at all. Running backgrounder on a 3GS does not compensate for not using quick reply/send, especially the sending part of it.

This looks so sick and I want access so badly, but I prob can't get help from anyone. xD
Can any one confirm this working on iTouch 2G? Im guessing most of the buggy stuff as been fixed from the previous beta.

not the same.. you still have to switch to the other. Or do something with the notification.. One thing i wish apple would take from android and make their own of.. Quick Reply would make my iphone the best gadget. Unless it can dispense beer

gizmodo has an article on the changes.. not much other than teathering, group messaging, the 3 second pause when answering a call is fixed, maps is a little snappier, and the new wallpaper.

Do not post links to beta firmware. Infractions will be issued. It has been mentioned many times in this thread so far.

I didn't say I thought it was the same. I said that Apple probably thinks it's the same. I highly doubt they will put a quick reply feature in the OS. Oh well, only a month until official 4.0 and jailbreak!

I would LOVE for it to mean that but I bet it just means the ability to invoke SMS from within an app. Maybe someone can creatively make a quick reply app using this API and multi-tasking.
