  • 960x640 Screen, 512MB RAM in iPhone HD?

    According to reports out today, Apple has placed a big order for next-generation iPhones that could live up to their rumored name of "iPhone HD." The sometimes-on-target-sometimes-off Taiwanese trade publication DigiTimes claims that the phone will have a 960640 touchscreen, and doubled RAM capacity to 512MB, as well as a larger battery. The report says that Foxconn, the same company which builds the current iPhone, received an order for 24 million devices to be shipped starting in June.

    Ming-Chi Kuo of "DigiTimes Research" says that the high resolution screen will use in-plane switching (IPS), the same technology used in the iPad as well as the 27-inch iMac to improve the screen's visibility when viewed at an angle. The screen (reportedly from LG Display and Prime View International, the company behind E Ink "electronic paper") also features fringe-field switching (FFS) for better readability in sunlight, emphasizing Apple's new focus on its mobile devices as e-readers. The screen in supposed to be 33% thinner than existing iPhone displays, in order to make room for larger battery modules supplied by Simplo Technology and Dynapack International Technology. The teardown of the Gizmodo phone showed a battery 16% larger than the one on the iPhone 3GS.

    Kuo also reports the new phone will use the same A4 system-on-a-chip, rather than the multicore Cortex A9, and that RAM will be increased to 512MB. The Gizmodo phone, by contrast, had 256MB of RAM, as did the phone revealed on a Vietnamese website last week.

      Since when is 960X480 considered "HD"?

      Looks like a great phone, but let's not start redefining standards.
      Since 720 is HD, nobody is redefining standards but you may want to actually KNOW them.

      Maybe it's really 480x960!

      I would have to agree, it is not really HD but then again it wouldnt really make any sense to have a screen that has 720 lines of resolution which is that small. Also consider that if this holds to be true a 960x640 screen would be the highest resolution screen on a mobile device to date so if you have ever used an HTC HD2 or a motorola droid or nexus one, the iphones screen is going to be sharper than all of them by a large amount, the HD2 the nexus are 800x480 and the droid is 854x480 so we are talking as compared to the former 2 devices the iphoen will have 160 more vertical lines of resolution and 160 more horizontal as well

      1280x720 is 720p, folks.. which is the lowest resolution considered "HD".

      Highly doubt we'll be seeing that in a phone.

      Lol apple had no choice but to double the ram if they want a multi tasking iPhone to compete with the newest android phones, any jailbroken iPhone user will tell u that when they use backgrounder after 4 or 5 apps even the 3gs starts to get sluggish sometimes less then that many apps the a4 CPU and memory bump will fix that

      which is close enough to 720p... your eyes wouldn't even make the difference on a big screen so it's even less relevant on a 3.5 inch screen.
      My bad on the typo, but 960X680 is still not even close to any HD specification.

      The closest is 1280X720. So this phone is missing 320 pixels in one direction and 40 in the other. That's 12,800 missing pixels compared to the lowest resolution HD specification.

      I don't care if my eyes can or cannot make out the difference, the fact remains that this does not "live up to the rumored name of iPhone HD" (as stated in the first sentence of this article).

      So you're basically ranting about a 1% pixel difference. *sigh*

      Lol and Zune HD is 480 x 272 and microsoft called it HD.

      What are you kidding? On my 3GS I can run around 10-15 apps in the background without any lag. On my Nexus One (Has 512MB of RAM) I can do 20-40 without lag.

      512MB of RAM is more than enough.

      Yeah, sorry, looks like I had another typo.

      1280X720 = 921,600

      960X680 = 652,800

      The next iPhone is missing 268,800 pixels, or 29.2% of the 720p resolution.

      So it's really not close. But like you said, I'm sure Steve Jobs wants to follow Microsoft's lead, right?

      technically 480p is considered an hd video format, that is why sometimes you see websites saying 480p is hd. most people dont know it but hd is not just 720p and up, but it is resolustion 960*480 and above. so therefore iphone hd would be appopriate :-)
