  • Apple Cries Itself a River Over iPhone Leak

If you haven't already determined from the fallout from the 4th gen iPhone leak and subsequent legal fiasco, Apple is more than just angry about "Gizmodo-gate." Apple is also "injured" and still reeling from "huge" losses incurred from the iPhone debacle. As my MMI colleague Paul covered in great detail on Friday, a San Mateo judge has unsealed documents connected to the lost/stolen prototype iPhone. And apart from the case details chronicled in the documents, many noticed something else in the papers and discussed it widely across the blogosphere this weekend: Apple complains a lot.

"Whine, whine, whine" is what some perceive Apple to be doing on a perpetual basis in the wake of the leak. In the documents, Apple uses strong language to assert how "immensely damaging" the fiasco proved to be for the company. A representative for Apple was quoted saying the following:

"By publishing details about the phone and its features, sales of current Apple products are hurt wherein people that [sic] would have otherwise purchased a currently existing Apple product would wait for the next item to be released, thereby hurting overall sales and negatively effecting [sic] Apple's earnings."
Hurt Apple's earnings? It's an argument that's difficult for some to swallow, particularly given the daily barrage of headlines in recent days about how the iPhone has steadily overtaken the great majority of its competitors and effectively squashed their chances of becoming the "iPhone killer." In fact, a great many industry analysts even argue that the scandal was "helpful" to Apple because of the awareness and hype it has generated in current and future iPhone models. And if you've read anything about Apple's earnings in recent quarters, does it look like Cupertino is poised to suffer any real damages to the runaway train that is Apple's revenue express?

Strangely enough, of all the things Apple has done that could understandably rub people the wrong way, these "complaints" have apparently done more to annoy some Apple fans than just about anything else Cupertino has done lately.

Even when it comes to the tech giants among us, nobody likes a whiner.

It does remind me of IBM.
Is spreading FUD such a bad thing from Apple's point of view? How many people are now holding off from buying an Android phone in anticipation of the next iPhone?

Apple created the product, and THEY should be the one's to reveal it when they want to... not Gizmodo or some 21 year-old thief. This "whining" has less to do with the current situation, and much more about setting a precedent for future journalists who'd entertain the idea of buying stolen merchandise and revealing trade secrets.

Apple has been successful with their "secretive" business practice... so why shouldn't they whine when someone illegally wants to mess with it?

If so secretative why would apple allow AT&T to publish such a statement.
I will be upgrading the 3gs if the wifi is significantly better on the 4g. If not I will be looking at something else.
The iPhone isn't really anything special to me. I use maybe 30 minutes on the phone. The rest is web, music and video via dtunes or a stream. Apps, probably under utilizing all the tip calculators, cheesy games, and other things.
Don't get me wrong it's a great device jailbroken but vanilla it's ok.
We shall see if all this hype for the 4g delivers unlike the 3g to 3gs sales pitch.
Oh one last thing, previos post has a tad nit of sarcasm.

If it has EVER been a secret to you that next year a new iPhone is going to come out for around the same, if not the exact same price as whatever current generation iPhone is out...then you must be slow. Roughly 1 year from the 4g will come the 5g and it will be better. This is not a secret at all. Sure the features (or lack of) might be a secret until closer to release, but that doesn't mean that people don't know a new phone is coming that will be better. I am not trying to fight anyone I just want people to realize that EVERY apple iproduct will be upgraded in one year.

the figures speak for them selves look here
Although I agree with you that it's not hurting Apple sales, your report would not prove that since it's dated April 20th, only days after the leak was reported

yeah I got it wrong, still they have higher profits that will cover any loss from this

I say loss but I don't think it will effect them people buy Appl£s products no matter what, even in the financial down turn

Sounds to me like someone in your family works for Apple and you're hoping for a free phone and cheap popularity from them!
kids like you need to grow a brain in place of a hollow cranium, get an education and be properly informed before blabbing in public!!
Time to change your daipers...they're soiled!!

Everybody understands what trade secrets are, and the need to protect them. There's no other company involved in such matters that robs people blind!

Nokia who originally developed the technology which Apple is now using (without paying royalty like everyone else) did not try to rip consumers off but instead allowed everyone else to use it and develop it further with the intention that the whole world would benefit from the tecnological innovation!! I still recall my last nokia phone doing things which Apple is only just introducing and it's not like the technology isn't there already....

Apple on the other hand are creaming out as much as possible, and that is what's wrong with it all. :thumbs down:

I'm really glad this leak came out! Why is this company always trying to screw people? I learned my lesson a long time ago when I paid $250 for an iPod and 1 month later a cheaper and better iPod came out.

It really annoys me when most other companies start to discount old products and old technology, apple still wants to charge full price for something that came out 11 months ago.

I have to agree with various things said here. Steve Jobs complains more then anyone I have ever seen. He gives a little more each version Iphone he puts out. There are things on the new version that are not available on any of the older phones. It is a good practice for making a lot of money. The thing is there hasn't been any serious competition from any other smartphone so he has been able to pretty much do what he wants to at least up to this point. I am really tired of his complaining and propriatery equipment. He sues everybody that in his mind is stealing his techology. He reminds me of a little child that has never grown up. Because of all his ridiculous antics I am changing to the HTC droid incredible from verizon. It has a lot of great features which at this point in time surpass the 3GS iphone. There is something that is competing against the iphone so watch out STeve Jobs your not the only smartphone out there.

so its there own fault they lost the device and now they complain that they are loosing, next time put your dumb *** employees on a tighter leash.(no offense to those that do abide by the rules at Apple inc. or w/e. But i mean, now they know not to trust drunk *** alcoholics with their prototypes.
