  • Upgrade Eligibility Dates Begin Rolling Back With AT&T
Ok guys and gals we all know that Apple will be releasing the new iPhone soon right? Last year lots of people were angry that they could not take advantage of upgrade pricing for the new iPhone. But it looks like AT&T is trying to avoid that fury this year and allow many more people to upgrade.

And their right on the ball this year as they have started to roll back eligibility dates some have reported. I don't know if the roll back will be for everyone or if that date is only for certain customers and not all at this time. While there are multiple reports of this from AT&T customers, it could be they are only rolling back the dates for customers over a certain service level.

One of the readers at Mobilecrunch.com stated...

Not sure if anyone [..] has noticed this same thing, but my Upgrade Eligibility date on my AT&T account switched from 11/21 to 6/21 in the last day or so. I bought a 3GS on launch day last year, and my upgrade date read 11/21 since then. A few other folks in my office have noticed the same changes happening to their accounts as well.

6/21? Could this be the day they release the new iPhones?

Mobilecrunch: We’ve since confirmed that this isn’t an isolated incident, but it’s definitely not showing up for everyone. AT&T could be rolling this out across their database slowly. Another possibility: they may not have intended for anyone to see this yet, and just borked the query for a handful of people.

Well I checked my account out tonight and mine has not changed yet... But hoping it does!

Apple could announce the fourth gen iPhone at:

    1. WWDC (where they’ve announced every other iPhone), which begins on June 7th this year.
    2. Yerba Buena Arts Center, which Apple has purportedly locked down for June 22nd (one day after the upgrade eligibility date).

    What do you think?

Check your account out and see if they rolled your eligibility date back yet. If they have not yet keep your eye on your account.

As far as I am aware and understand it this is how I understand the AT&T upgrade process for those of you a little confused.

Yes, you sign up for a 2 year contract. However, typically you can upgrade fully after 18 months if your account is clean (don't be late on those payments). With the iPhones, if you currently have an iPhone with a data plan (almost everyone with an iPhone would have a data plan as it is a requirement) AT&T will probably bumped down the wait period from 18 months to between 12 and 14 month. Thats what they did with the 3Gs (after A LOT of complaining from iPhone users). In the end I don't think this indicates at all the date when the iPhone 4G/HD will come out. I think this is AT&Ts way of selling out their remaining inventory (hoping people will now buy the 3Gs instead of waiting for the 4G which IMO is pretty dumb.)

This recent change of upgrade-ability seems to only effect current iPhone accounts. I have two phone on my account, both bought at the same time. The iPhone is now available for upgrade. The Motorola is still locked in for November (which is 18 months from when I bought it).

      i got my 3G on 7/21/08
an upgrade every two years would be 7/21/10

but my upgrade date says 2/18/11 which is 2.5 years.........

they better change my date to qualify at the correct 2 year date

i bought my 3GS for fullprice last year..

UPDATE: I found mine. For Premier customers, you must go to the upgrade page and select a phone (I simply selected the iPhone 3GS).

      Mine says the following:

"You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price on 11/20/2010"

      and

"As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade to an iPhone at a discounted price on 11/20/2010"

I purchased my 3GS on launch day and would really like to upgrade to the 4G as soon as it's available. Hopefully I can pull off the discount, somehow...

Rescuer... I would certainly contact AT&T about that. With a clean account you should have full upgrade options right now. A half year after your contract expires sounds very dicey. I know AT&T will snap your upgrade date back into oblivion for being even once late on a bill, but I've never heard of them pushing it beyond contract termination.

another EASY Way to check upgrade eligibility is to go to

      http://www.att.com/iphone

see the spot in the middle that says "CURRENT AT&T CUSTOMER? > CHECK UPGRADE ELIGIBILITY"

Rescuer- did you change your plan in any way since you 1st got your iPhone? Add more minutes? Unlimited text? I know that Sprint made you sign a new 2 year if you did something like that mid- contract. Not sure about AT&T.

I just checked my account, i have 5 lines on a family plan, and for my line which used to show the upgrade eligibility date a few days ago as 12/10/10 is now showing a new date of 07/22/10.

I will definitely be picking up the new gen iphone....and sooner than I thought
