  • Upgrade Eligibility Dates Begin Rolling Back With AT&T
Ok guys and gals we all know that Apple will be releasing the new iPhone soon right? Last year lots of people were angry that they could not take advantage of upgrade pricing for the new iPhone. But it looks like AT&T is trying to avoid that fury this year and allow many more people to upgrade.

And their right on the ball this year as they have started to roll back eligibility dates some have reported. I don't know if the roll back will be for everyone or if that date is only for certain customers and not all at this time. While there are multiple reports of this from AT&T customers, it could be they are only rolling back the dates for customers over a certain service level.

One of the readers at Mobilecrunch.com stated...

Not sure if anyone [..] has noticed this same thing, but my Upgrade Eligibility date on my AT&T account switched from 11/21 to 6/21 in the last day or so. I bought a 3GS on launch day last year, and my upgrade date read 11/21 since then. A few other folks in my office have noticed the same changes happening to their accounts as well.

6/21? Could this be the day they release the new iPhones?

Mobilecrunch: We’ve since confirmed that this isn’t an isolated incident, but it’s definitely not showing up for everyone. AT&T could be rolling this out across their database slowly. Another possibility: they may not have intended for anyone to see this yet, and just borked the query for a handful of people.

Well I checked my account out tonight and mine has not changed yet... But hoping it does!

Apple could announce the fourth gen iPhone at:

    1. WWDC (where they’ve announced every other iPhone), which begins on June 7th this year.
    2. Yerba Buena Arts Center, which Apple has purportedly locked down for June 22nd (one day after the upgrade eligibility date).

    What do you think?

Check your account out and see if they rolled your eligibility date back yet. If they have not yet keep your eye on your account.

Mine says 03/2011 but I am going to call them and complain if they don't change it. I just went without my iPhone for over six months because of iPhone and Att problems and I sure hope they are kind enough to upgrade me.... they have been wonderful to me so far...

      Any idea about this?

"As a valued AT&T customer, you may be eligible for an upgrade on this line, with no-commit equipment pricing and without signing a 2-year commitment. Click 'Upgrade Eligibility' to view your upgrade options."

That's it. I got the iPhone on launch day, 3G on launch day and 3Gs on launch day. That is all I have under upgrade eligibility. Nothing about an iPhone upgrade and no dates. Am I eligible for a full no frills upgrade?

[[edit]] Never mind. I clicked through to upgrade, found the iPhone and it shows "You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price on 11/20/2010"

ya i bought mine on sept 09 , my update shows as sept 2010.
my wifes is may 2011 .

Correct me if im wrong but if I update on sept for the discounted price , my wife can buy one at the 399/499 price (if its the same price as the current 3GS) rather than the 599/699 full price.

The day I activated my 3GS, It showed I was eligible on June 19, 2010. Then when everyone started complaining about having to wait, because the 3GS was released earlier than the 3G was. AT&T started fixing accounts. Mine got changed to July 15th 2010 for some reason. I've been trying to get it changed back ever since with no luck.
It amazes me how many AT&T employee's claim they have never heard of an early upgrade.

If you spend 100.00 or more a month on a line, keep your account in good standings, you get a early upgrade. That is why your line is eligible in July, and your wife's isn't. My wife and I are the same way. The wife got the 3G 45 days before the 3GS came out. So when I upgrade this time she is getting my 3GS, then next year we both will upgrade.
I've been paying at least $100/month (excluding those months with $100-200 overcharges T_T) and still have 12/04/10 date. I hate AT&T!

I used to work for At&t Wireless. Usually you cannot upgrade unless you have at least completed 21 months of your contract. Of course there are exceptions. What some posters here say is true. They look at how much that line pays. Not i repeat not how much you pay on all the lines. We are talking about the line that you upgrade. If you have a family plan and you are upgrading the main line on the account, they can, not guaranteed, but they can allow an early upgrade, if they choose to. If you have an added line, even with an iphone internet package on there. They will probably tell you no. If you are lucky you can get the partial discount, if you sign a new contract. But that doesnt make sense, if you can afford full price, it would make more sense to shell out the additional money and buy the phone at no commited price if you could afford to. Alot really depends on how much that line spends per month, any non payments, how long you been with the company for that line specifically etc. The mistake most ppl make is they look at how much they spend total with all their lines. With wireless companies, before they even say yes or no to an early upgrade, they look at the situation, and the amount that line brings in. Hope that helps with any confusion as to why some arent eligible and some are.

isnt the iphone upgrade usually different then the norm?

For instance , if i log into my account right now I can buy a new 3gs for a subsidized price of 399 rather than the 599 full price.

Obviously it would extend my contract 2 years though.

to be brief it seems that the following holds true.

main line can upgrade every year for standard full discount price.
secondary lines have to wait 18 months
any iphone plan can upgrade at any point for a small subsidized price rather than the full retail price

hopefully a 13 year customer should be able to fix it with zero negativity from the customer service person

      *edit
just noticed my account also says Valued customer since 01/27/2005
*sigh not sure what changover they did to mess that one up too. it should be 1997
I am replying to the party you put about 2005. The valued customer might be either when that particular line was added to the account, or when Cingular changed from At&t. Alot of the accounts in the computer would say they would be a valued customer based on when that line, not the account was first done. Or also, around the time Cingular changed to At&t.

I havent worked there in about a year or so. There is a difference between upgrading to a regular phone, or an iphone. I know you could get a partial discount after one year of fulfilling your contract for an iphone. That usually equated to paying about $400 instead of $600. But it would mean that you needed to sign a new contract. Which is why i said that makes no sense, if you can afford to pay the no contract price just do that. Unless all you can afford is the $400 and are forced to sign a new contract. When i was there, iphones were always treated different. If you said you wanted an early upgrade to any other phone, you would probably be turned down. If you said iphone specifically, they usually are good at seeing what they can do for that line. Alot depended on the manager also. Because we always had the tag line of there isnt anything we can do for you on that line. In reality the manager could allow for an early upgrade to an iphone, or for that matter any phone. They would just override it in the system, and note the account as to why that line was allowed to upgrade early. Alot has changed though, from what i hear At&t is becoming stricter on what they allow in the store vs. before when i worked there. I do know they are more flexible if the actually line is bringing in alot of revenue, vs. say an added line at ten bucks.

I see what you mean about the upgrade price. Might as well pay full price and have same contract.

However bout the upgrade price after a year, I have had att since sept 09 and I can already buy another 3gs for 399. Well before the year mark.

Here's what they say about my account. I've been a "valued customer since 6/30/2009" when I got the 3GS.

You can take advantage of our no commitment pricing Our records indicate that you will be eligible for an upgrade at a discounted price on 03/01/2011

As a valued AT&T customer, we can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at a reduced discount, along with a 2-year commitment. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 03/01/2011
      So confusing.

Sucks to be me. Hopefully, they are slowly offering this to everyone.

Began services with AT&T in Oct. 2009 and I have this...

      iPhone Upgrade
You currently have a past due balance. Pay your past due balance and take advantage of our no commitment pricing for an iPhone at a participating retail sales location. Use Online Account Manager to check and pay your balance now. You may qualify for a full discount on a standard iPhone upgrade on 10/14/2010

Guess annual upgrades do exist with AT&T as they do with Verizon Wireless. Off to pay the bill through myWireless on my iPhizzy.

I called AT&T and they told me that the primary number gets an upgrade every 12 months while the secondary numbers get upgrades every 18 months. So my wife and I will be waiting to upgrade until next June so we can upgrade together.

I called just to see if theres a way to change my date, i'm the main phone on a family plan - my dates 11/25/2010 and my wifes is 12/11/2010.
The lady said that she can't move my date but iphone upgrades are handled differently and allow early upgrades reduced by 200 or so. Anything is better than full price.... and waiting until november.
