  • Upgrade Eligibility Dates Begin Rolling Back With AT&T
Ok guys and gals we all know that Apple will be releasing the new iPhone soon right? Last year lots of people were angry that they could not take advantage of upgrade pricing for the new iPhone. But it looks like AT&T is trying to avoid that fury this year and allow many more people to upgrade.

And their right on the ball this year as they have started to roll back eligibility dates some have reported. I don't know if the roll back will be for everyone or if that date is only for certain customers and not all at this time. While there are multiple reports of this from AT&T customers, it could be they are only rolling back the dates for customers over a certain service level.

One of the readers at Mobilecrunch.com stated...

Not sure if anyone [..] has noticed this same thing, but my Upgrade Eligibility date on my AT&T account switched from 11/21 to 6/21 in the last day or so. I bought a 3GS on launch day last year, and my upgrade date read 11/21 since then. A few other folks in my office have noticed the same changes happening to their accounts as well.

6/21? Could this be the day they release the new iPhones?

Mobilecrunch: We’ve since confirmed that this isn’t an isolated incident, but it’s definitely not showing up for everyone. AT&T could be rolling this out across their database slowly. Another possibility: they may not have intended for anyone to see this yet, and just borked the query for a handful of people.

Well I checked my account out tonight and mine has not changed yet... But hoping it does!

Apple could announce the fourth gen iPhone at:

    1. WWDC (where they’ve announced every other iPhone), which begins on June 7th this year.
    2. Yerba Buena Arts Center, which Apple has purportedly locked down for June 22nd (one day after the upgrade eligibility date).

    What do you think?

Check your account out and see if they rolled your eligibility date back yet. If they have not yet keep your eye on your account.

Not bad. I got the 1st gen for $599 then received the $100 rebate, sold it for $280 last year, then purchased the 3GS for $399.

Hmm, 4 iPhones on our account, only one, mine (hehehe), shows upgrade availablility on 6/20/2010. 3 of the 4 were bought on launch day last year. The 4th is a 3g and was bought a couple months earlier after I thought I'd lost my 2g, which was later found and no longer has any contract. I will be watching the other 3, but it seems weird that only one has the change for the same account.

My date is still 7/2/2010. I'm not too disappointed the date hasn't changed yet. I've only been on contract for a couple of months, but was a Pick Your Plan customer since 11/2008, so I guess I am good. Of course, once something is announced, I will call AT&T and see if they can adjust the date if I sign a new contract.

To a prior poster having the 2.5 year upgrade eligibility... Gotta watch out, sometimes making changes to the account like rate plan changes will essentially renew the clock on the contract - extending it out. It's a shady maneuver they do - so you might want to think when the last time you made a change to the account (not adding lines) - that's likely when they extended the contract. Of course, that should not be applied to the upgrade eligibility, since the phones amortized from the initial contract date. They probably coded something wrong...

After a year and a half on my 2 year contract I will finally be able to upgrade from my 3G . I knew I could hold out from buying into the 3GS hype . Plus I cant believe some people are getting the upgrade earlier (1 year). Bring on the 4G baby!

Sweet. I could get a new iPhone when it comes out (if I really feel the need). Though my wife's line shows 03/04/2011 when it was purchased on the same day and is on the same FamilyPlan. We'll probably wait until the next one anyways.

Well mine hasn't changed and it should. I got my 3GS on June 19th (release day).
The day I activated my 3GS, It showed I was eligible on June 19, 2010. Then when everyone started complaining about having to wait, because the 3GS was released earlier than the 3G was. AT&T started fixing accounts. Mine got changed to July 15th 2010 for some reason. I've been trying to get it changed back ever since with no luck.
It amazes me how many AT&T employee's claim they have never heard of an early upgrade.

If you spend 100.00 or more a month on a line, keep your account in good standings, you get a early upgrade. That is why your line is eligible in July, and your wife's isn't. My wife and I are the same way. The wife got the 3G 45 days before the 3GS came out. So when I upgrade this time she is getting my 3GS, then next year we both will upgrade.

i've had the same plan for as long as i can remember. never changed a thing.

obviously i'm going to call them to see why my date change since there is no reason for it at all.

hopefully a 13 year customer should be able to fix it with zero negativity from the customer service person

      *edit
just noticed my account also says Valued customer since 01/27/2005
*sigh not sure what changover they did to mess that one up too. it should be 1997

Just like Poseidon, i don't have an upgrade date. It just says i can upgrade.
As a valued AT&T customer, this line qualifies for discounted equipment pricing when you sign a new 2-year commitment.

We can offer you an additional discount up to $50.00 off regular 2-year commitment pricing and a waived upgrade fee on most devices. Additional discounts do not apply to iPhone.

Plus, i think i'm going to tell them i want 68 bucks off my plan

To Rescuer, mine says 04/05/2005, and i know i've had service since before that. i kinda wonder if 05 is when AT&T took it back over from Cingular.
