  • Appsidy Shuts Down

Appsidy, the in-Cydia payment system alternative to the Cydia Store, is shutting down.

Opened a little before Christmas 2009, less than half a year later marks the close of the Appsidy store. Recent Cydia updates addressing privacy (Appsidy used the UUID of your device to verify sales, as does the Cydia Store) broke Appsidy's ability to function well within Cydia, and after discussing the situation, they've decided to toss in the towel.

Users who have purchased items through Appsidy will still be able to access those packages, either through Rock.app, or the Cydia Store should the developers/artists of those packages choose to move to Cydia Store. My inbox is flooded with folks asking to do so.

In an email sent earlier today, Appsidy had this to say about previous purchases:

There will be two options for users to obtain their previous purchases:

    1) Rock Store: Users using Google account/rock id -- These users will be able to login to Rock and simply install their package from there (assuming your package is available in the Rock Store).
    2) Cydia Store: Developers who migrate their packages into Cydia Store -- the Cydia Store will perform a lookup against our database and those who have purchased in the past will retain their license.
So no one should lose anything.

Rock.app is still around doing it's thing, but Appsidy is no more.

Just sign into rock.app and under manage there is a tab called liscence. And then you just redownload it

i dunno, i really don't see anything wrong paying a buck or two for 3rd party apps..... would definitely help devs stay interested in creating more useful and cool apps.... and nobody would be taken for granted...and software too.... like the spirit or blackrain or sn0wbreeze..etc etc???? i mean really.... you gotta be nuts if you wouldn't mind paying a couple of bucks for that!!!!

      Yes I own apple products.
If android was an option everyone would be on it already. Everyone I know myself included would rather polish toilet seats than write apps for android.

And I'm not a fan boy so don't bother. I actually own a droid and writing apps for android is a mess.

*EDIT: Nevermind, I'm gonna keep my comments to myself on this one... too much politics going on with the battle of the Jailbreak stores.*

      Long live the Cydia Store
Why is Rock to you, is considered money hungry pigs? It can't be because they offer several apps for sale since Cydia does the same thing. Sooo...why are they money hungry pigs?

The reason AppSidy was great, I say from a developing perspective, is that I'm honestly having a hard time finding out how to set up for the Cydia Store. AppSidy had a portal with a couple forms and I was good to go. In contrast: I've spent days e-mailing people and googling variants on "join Cydia store" with no luck. I'm sure I'm being stupid. I MUST be missing something obvious; there's no rational way a sales system should be as difficult to join as Cydia seems to be. Try as I may, though, I can't find the "join" link, I get no replies from Saurik... so I'll miss the AppSidy team, they were professional and courteous and always responded fast to their e-mail.

(Nothing ill meant towards Saurik of course; the man does good work, he keeps well busy, he must not have a support team on staff to help...)

I have tried downloading both ways and still am unable to obtain my purchase of less than a month ago and this despite the email from appsity staing this would all be cleared up in a few days, going belly up is all cleared up, WOW!
I sent another eail today requesting a refund, fat chance that's going to happen, I am going to file a claim with paypal which will probably be denied.
SO I lost ten bucks so at least one person got beat!

I agree. I hope people realize that saurik gets a healthy percentage of cydia store sales (+/- 30%). Saurik gives bigger sales percentages to devs who stay exclusive to the cydia store and refuse to go to rock. I don't have a problem with this at all but calling rock money hungry is laughable.

Huh, what about devs who freakin' LIE to people after putting out some lame little video recorder example and then dress up their website, saying ooooooh, look. I've got the very first iPhone video recorder app almost ready to go. Lots of us oldtimers gave you money f$cktard in the beginning of the jailbreak game. You promised the world and delivered nothing.

Excuse me. You did take some pretty pix of a Mac conference that we financed. Yeah this was two years ago, but I don't forget screwjobs.

You can joke about the Kanye West of programming thing, but drunknbass, you just flat out committed theft by fraud.

You owe me $25.00. [email protected] on Paypal

      Cough it up.

I think the point he was trying to make was that writing apps for the iphone existed long before the appstore was invented. If your scenario comes to play, the only apps we won't likely see are apps made by large companies. The private sector will still make apps regardless of the situation. Plenty of great Apps were free and now cost money simply because they CAN. I am NOT backing piracy, but piracy should be written into the business model as losses much like theft of physical merchandise is written into business models of department stores. It is a fact of life, and frankly there are far worse things that happen on a day to day basis on this earth to be worried about the people who own certain things only because piracy exists and if it didn't they wouldn't buy those things in the first place.
