  • Nintendo Declares War on Apple

Having defeated Sony, Nintendo is now setting its sights on Apple. According to a report in the Times Online, company president Satoru Iwata told his staff that the war with Sony is over and that Apple is the “enemy of the future.” The Japanese manufacturer is still making money, but has seen profits fall in the slow economy and intends to market more family-oriented games, which is seen as an Apple stronghold.

Nintendo has some justification to be smug about its position compared with Sony, as they sold almost twice as many Wiis as the number of PlayStation 3s that Sony sold during the 2009 holiday season. However, Nintendo's sales were 21% less in the first quarter of this year than they were in the same period last year. Nintendo's DS, though still the top-selling mobile game machine, is seeing its sales pinched by the rising popularity of iPhone OS-based devices. In trying to expand the Ds's appeal beyond the traditional market of primarily young, primarily male gamers, Nintendo is squarely in competition with the iPhone and iPod touch, which are attractive to a wider demographic range.

The company's hopes are largely pinned on the new Nintendo 3DS console, which is to be officially launched next month at the E3 Expo. Nintendo claims that the device will be able to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses." Company president Iwata was interviewed by the Asahi Shimbun news paper and stated that the 3DS will have "highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," though the company later said he had been misquoted. Reportedly, the three-dimensional effects will be able to be switched off in response to health concerns about long-term 3D use.

Nintendo has been in gaming since 1889. Don't think they are going anywhere. I think the only thing that hurt them along the way was dropping Sony in the first place. If they never would have done that there would be no playstation, well not under Sony's command. I think that was the biggest mistake that Nintendo ever did.

How fitting that Apple should go up again Nintendo, the one company in the world whose policies I despise as much as Apple's (not counting Microsoft, who are still in a league of their own). Actually, Nintendo are pretty much the Apple of video games; they have the same ridiculously over-the-top secretive development model, the same way of trying to push smaller companies around, the same nightmarish way of handling licensing and IP, even the same notorious censorship policies when it comes to games on their systems. Even the Wii's design reeked of Apple's typical "futuristic" design style.

Don't get me wrong, they make good games, much like Apple make good phones, but both companies have a LONG way to go in terms of customer service.

nintendos future depends on how the 3ds turns out and how god their next console is. unless they can get a larger crowd, nintendo is not going to do well over the next year or two.

Don't quiet think so. Nintendo has been making a killing in all of their products since launch till now. They are aimed at a massive audience of families that play games. I don't think 3Ds will not make a difference in their overall view. I mean look at VirtualBoy. It came in and was all hyped. It failed and they moved on to still rock the market with their other lineups.

I think Nintendo is upset because they know that games are - is - going to be the selling thing for the iPad and they feel threatened?

Now settle down with the fanboyism.

LoL.... for fsp I like my computer, for sports games I like my Xbox 360 and for hand held gaming PSP ftw. Sorry but no way in hell an iphone app can compete with the psp r/t user interface and over all fun factor IMHO. Now if I'm sitting on the pot or am bored at work, iPhone games are fine.

bwahahahahah wow that was a good one. Sorry but dollar for dollar Macs just can't compete with a PC when it comes to gaming. I know you're drunk on the kool-aid steve is giving you but just because stevie says it doesn't make it true. Nice one though.... I needed a little comedy break in my night.

Nintendo didnt defeat anyone, thats the joke statement of the year. Wii has its perks, but cant compeat with PS3 and 360 graphics and over all multimedia. Therefor the 3DS, or whatever they call it, cant compeat with the iPhone. You always have your phone with you. Nintendo cant make a device that is more convenient then iPhone. Nintendo is getting out of there league, stay in elementary schools.

      No offense bro

And there is no sense at all arguing which console is better, as it in the end comes down to the individual and his decision which one is more suitable for him.

Alot of people here may not be into nintendo anymore because everyone is older but look at the console sales number. Nintendo tops ps3 and xbox month after month. Ps3 and xbox are dropping prices just to compete with nintendo buyers. Ps3 and xbox are lossing money for every console they sell when nintendo are making profits.

Nintendo have seen a slight drop in profit compared to the last few years....um...maybe cos everyone and their mother has a DS & Wii at this stage. The Wii is coming up to 4 years old and the DS is nearly 6 years old. You cant expect growth in sales to continue forever.

I thought Nintendo would have more sense than the "fear" Apple's "gaming" side of things. At the end of the day, to play alot of games and play them well, you need physical buttons.

I'd sit down for up to a few hours playing a DS, but iDevices games are only good to pass the time in a waiting room and if your bored in class.

And you could buy a Wii & a DS & a 360 for the price of 1 iPad. Apple's devices are only ever going to be supplementary to a persons dedicated gaming device. And those that dont have consoles already are not buying iDevices for its games.

So take a chill pill Nintendo, you have nothing to worry about, you'll be #1 for many more years to come
