  • Android on the iPhone 3G - Progress Report

planetbeing recently let us know he had Android dual booting on the iPhone 2G (the original). He has now posted a picture showing progress on the 3G. The image shows an iPhone 3G booting into a BusyBox / Buildroot shell, and shows WiFi working.

BusyBox is a tiny binary which combines small optimized versions of many common UNIX utilities into one package, which let's the developer interact with the device without having a full GUI environment operating.

He's able to talk to the baseband, although only through the debugging channel at the moment. This means calls can be made.

The to-do list is small now:
I'd still like to get the WM8991 codec working for it in openiboot (shouldn't be much trouble since there's a datasheet), just so we can iron out any quirks before testing it inside the kernel. We also need a new multi-touch driver (they've upgraded from Zephyr to Zephyr2). After that, we'll have a working port of Android.

OTOH, even though android is much more open and less restricted, I can't help but feel it is just a fancy phone. OK, I now the iPhone (duh) is a fancy phone, but it feels more like an all in one device with a phone as one of the many features. I just don't like the look of android, but I will without a doubt be dual booting it onto my 3G when this comes out so I can have a proper play around with it!
The Android OS is very customizable, so if you don't like the look you can change it to your specifications. And I know I might have to wait longer for updates, but that Sense UI is SEXY.

There once was a regime that operated like Apple. I think they called themselves Nazi or something like that.

Now only if it was possible on the iPad. Dual Boot Android and iPhoneOS? So much win.

I personally have owned and used a 2G iphone since Jan of 2008. Last September I purchased an Android phone, used it for 3 months without using my iPhone. It was hard to get used to, but once I started adding all the modifications (like I have on my iPhone) it couldn't handle it and crashed constantly. I got fed up and went back to my 2G iPhone.

Android does have some things going for it, but as for me and my prefs, I'm iPhone all the way. There are plenty of apps and mods to make the iphone allow for more customization if that's what you're into. The Droid is the best Android phone out there to date. I've used it and don't like it... and that's after using the Android system solely for 3 months.

So you are saying your iPhone 2G could handle more features with less memory than a Droid could?

      (Not being snarky, just wondering)

But I do give the guy credit for hacking another software onto a device that does not support it. I didnt think that was even possible so Kudos to planetbeing for making it possible! But the thing that sucks is for all those ppl out there that are waiting on this to download, in 4.0 this hack for the 3G will most likely be disabled now that apple is aware of what has been done. but since their is no 4.0 for iPhone 2G users, u guys have something to look forward to!
its not about if you think the os is "ugly" or not, its that we have options. personally i get bored easy and have a new theme just about every day..and the fact that all the people bragging about having android os on and android phone can kiss my butt because now we can have both in one beautiful iphone

Hack that Phone - Installing Android on the 1st generation iPhone

Can someone help me? I'm on step 3 and it says to "decompress" this file. I clicked on the link and all I got was the firmware-extractor.c file (no firware-extractor.zip file as in the illustration)

      What am I missing here?

I love my iPhone, but I highly dislike Apple. Tell me, how many times has Microsoft busted down a blogger's door when he wasn't home because he had leaked some info on the next Windows OS?

When I first got my iPhone, I was an Apple fanboy. Now, ever since they've been making the leash shorter and shorter, its been suffocating.

To be honest, I'm waiting 'til AT&T releases a subsidized version of either the Google Nexus One or the HTC Desire (not everyone can afford the unsubsidized version). The hardware specs stomps on Apple's iPhones, and Google's "Developer Freedom" sounds very appealing to both developers and tech savvy consumers like myself.

So in the meantime, I plan on porting to Android as soon as possible, atleast until I can have the N1/Desire.

As for anyone that has a problem with this - this is merely my opinion. To each his own. LoL remember the war between Berry users and iUsers!?!
I don't dislike Apple, just the ***holes running it!

By the way I just bought a iphone with dual boot android which I pick up tomorrow!
