  • Opera Mini Approved for App Store; Already Available in Some Countries

Many of us never thought we'd see the day when a third-party web browser would hit the App Store, especially considering Apple's previous app rejections due to "duplicating functionality" already on the phone. However, Apple finally approved the app today, and it already seems to be hitting UK App Stores and should be in the US store in a matter of hours.

The Opera Mini browser for iPhone has been anticipated for quite a while now, and for good reason: in terms of speed, Opera is the clear-cut winner. When you request a site with Opera on your phone, Opera's very own servers get the request to go to the site, download it, compress it, then send it to your iPhone, both lessening the bandwidth used as well as making the loading of the site much (up to 5x!) quicker. However, the browser does not ship with some well-known Apple-established flourishes, like pinch-to-zoom, and it also appears that Opera hand-coded their very own UI view, as there is no rubberbanding, and the scroll bar on the side acts a little differently. Also, you may notice iPhone-formatted (mobile) sites rendering slightly differently than they should, but considering it is only day 1, some of these things are bound to be worked out.

Maybe someday we'll see a MobileSubstrate extension to set Opera as the default web browser!

UPDATE: It's in the US store now, go grab it.

I love it!!!! R.I.P. Safari, if only you were fast, saved pages for instant back-button, had a sleek homescreen, and find-in-page...

Is anyone else getting an inch wide white gap to the right when you put it in landscape?

Nevermind, its gone. But I do like the browser very much. Super fast, I'm in it for speed anyway.

Another edit, seems like you cant watch NBC videos.

I'm glad the App got accepted, it's fast, but it's also missing those features that make iPhone browsing so great. Hopefully they'll get those going soon.

so whats the better protocol, http or socket?
also did some small test and Opera is easily 5x faster just like they said and it also reduces the download bandwidth by over half, possibly more

I don't know about you guys, but pinch-to-zoom works for me. It's not as fluid as Apple's pinch-to-zoom, but it does work.

      EDIT: Confirmed via AppleInsider:
Opera Mini supports both double tap to zoom in as well as pinch to zoom, although with the pinch gesture, you can only zoom into tho one set level of zoom available; when you pinch again, you're zoomed back out. This is confusing and awkward. On Safari, you can smoothly pinch to zoom into any level up to the maximum zoom. You only zoom out if you do a reverse pinch gesture.

Is there a way to import your bookmarks to it? If there is, I assume it's a jailbroken technique. The thing I really dislike about 3rd party iPhone web browsers is that they don't have access to my synced Safari bookmarks.

It's great, but I do miss the "pinch to zoom" function...
