  • iChat Features Hidden Within iPhone OS 4.0

Numerous sources are now confirming that there are some hidden iChat features and commands found inside of iPhone OS 4.0 that could be a clear sign that we may see a iPhone/iPod iChat app from Apple.

By watching some of the processes running on the new firmware, an process by the name of iChatAgent was found running in the background along with some additional iChat code. Could this be video calling? Or will it only come with iPhone 4G? Both the code and a separate tip to 9to5Mac have also referenced an Apple-run site that, along with three internal sites, are likely being used to host and test video on the iPhone. An unconfirmed but thorough insider maintained that the site is waiting for a "jingle" from the iChat app itself to initialize the feature; without information about the app's presence and connection quality it won't do anything.

9 to 5 Mac has also shown references within the SDK to features such as moderators, chat rooms, encrypted video conferences, and more. Digging even further, the same notification noises that the desktop iChat application uses, can actually be found in the SDK as well.

They even found what they believe to be an Apple iPhone Video Chat server at the following address:

    https://17.254.3.138/WebObjects/VCInit.woa/wa/

Trying to connect to it will however not get you anything since it would be meant to work with iChat on the iPhone.

Of course, we saw some similar video chat hints from good ol iPhone 3.2 which were soon pulled from Apple. So who knows, this could all just be a misunderstanding form the devs and Apple's inability to inform developers of what they have to work with. Or it could be the real thing. We'll find out soon enough I'm sure.

On another note, you might be asking "Big Deal! Who Uses iChat Anyways?". While iChat does require a mobile me account, Apple has recently announced that it is now adding "Aliases" to MobileMe user accounts. This means that a MobileMe user can create up to 5 different email accounts. This should open the door for more users starting to use iChat. iChat works incredibly well on the Mac, so I'd love to see it on the iPhone OS.

Well that's pretty cool. I've been hoping for a forward facing camera with iChat for a couple of iPhone generations now. It'd be great to see it become a reality.

I just hope that the 3GS owners can get some sort of a discount on the 4G. With how things have gone in the past though, it seems kind of doubtful.

I doubt this would work with the current models of the iphone. You wouldn't be able to see who you are chatting with at all. Either that, or they wouldn't be able to see you. This does feel promising to a front facing camera on the next model though. Plenty say they wouldn't use it. I know I have skype video chats at least weekly on the laptop. Would be so convenient to just do it on my phone.

They will probably do the same thing they did last year. There was some sort of discount so long as you have had the previous phone for about a year (I think 10 months was the minimum). Even so, it comes out cheaper (slightly) to just cancel your contract, pay the ETF, and sign a new one.

Just becoming aware of what apple is capable of, if there is an iChat feature implemented on the new 4.0 firmware, you'll probably have to buy the new iPhone top use it. Peoplelike me with the iPhone 3GS will probably be outta luck…

Sweet! My fiance will get the new iPhone when it comes out, but since I already got the 3GS back in September, I'll probably have to sit this update out... WHACK! If this iChat feature does work, maybe I can convince her to let me get it...

You can use iChat with an aim account too. Not just MobileMe.

This could very well be a limitation of the hardware in this case. We currently do not have a front facing camera. Not sure how you want to use iChat without one...

Yes because the front facing camera wont be the best for taking picture and prob will be vga or 1.3, 2 but the back has to be more

And blkeagle1 is right you can use aim, gmail, and other things not just mobile me i use ichat and skype all the time....

I bet the front camera is 2 megapixel, minimum 1.3, and the back goes to around 5 megapixel like the 4G phone that came out, forgot who made it though. Still, I'm going to buy this for sure, so it's going to be awesome.

Have any of you streamed video for more than 10 mins on an iphone?
obviously not because you'd all be here complaining about how it overheats, and how the battery life is DRASTICALLY reduced, now just imagine a constant stream both ways, I have no idea how this will work in a real world environment...

hey! more useless speculation! that pic was created as a rumor for the 3gs.

The value of this isn't only on the go. I wouldn't mind using these features while plugged in and charging. I am probably not going to be walking down the street while having a video conference anyway... Yes, they do get warm when recording, but not unbearable. I have pushed my 3gs to the limits streaming radio over 3G, recording video, etc. simultaneously backgrounding. It is much warmer than as it sits idle, but not unbearable.

The image itself is there simply for there to be something to look at. The news isn't at all about the image, but rather what was found in the iPhone OS 4.0 regarding iChat. I agree that a lot of these "news" articles are crappy, but you should actually read them before you bash them since you are bashing a picture here that is there simply to add some color to the article.

This has been said dozens of times all over. Do people not realize that if this means we get a front facing camera we will probably have skype alter their App to be able to use it?
