  • Circuitous : Your New Favorite App Switcher

Although I had mentioned this app in our Weekly App Update, I felt it deserved a little more attention and a breakdown of what it does. We've seen a few multi-tasking management apps such as Pro Switcher and MultiFl0w, and now up to the plate is Circuitous. Circuitous is an custom app switcher that shows currently open applications in a handy dock on the right side of the iPhone or iPod screen where you can launch or terminate apps.

Of course, like the current Multitasking apps, this one will also allow you to switch between them. Using the Activator methods as usual, you can set up "previous" and "next" controls for the app switching.

I particularly like the Dock feature for current apps open. Just seems very "appleish" to me. The whole app is very smooth and clean. A+ in my books.

With a recent update since our last post, brings a few additional features.

    New in v.1.1:
New Features: Tap and hold icon to reorder, or slide out until the icon dims to quit that app, shows free memory on the bottom of the dock, double tap dock to free up more memory, options for badges, icon labels, app animation, left and right handed, become homescreen, the x on the icons, and ability to launch from lockscreen. Also moved down the dock to more in the middle.
    • Badges On Icons
    • More Options in Settings
    • Tap and hold an icon to reorder apps
    • Tap and hold an icon and then slide out until the icon dims to quit the app
    • When dock is up slide to left or right on the screen to cycle through open apps
    • Tap and hold outside of dock when initiated until the top apps icon pops up, then drag the icon to the dock to background that app

After installing, load the settings app and configure your preferred dock activation method.

Best of all, this app is FREE. You can download it with Rock or Cydia.

yes. you need backgrounder. try re-springing your phone. i had to before it worked. if that doesnt work: re-boot.

      ^ ??

...anyway..@ Rhekt...you're right, this does seem snappier than PS and it does appear to use less memory.

I've uninstalled PS in favour of giving this with backgrounder a trial.
Quite impressed so far...& it's FREE! Much appreciated

I wonder if both this and PS will play nicely with the upcoming Springboard Rotator.

For one reason or another this app is killing my battery. Odd? When I uninstall it my battery use is back to normal. I tested it out 4 times with/without it and it is definitely not my imagination and it sucks because this app is sweet. I am going to rejailbreak my 3GS and hope it makes a difference.

Seems to work as well as Kirikae.

Memory for my iPhone 3G with this running ranges from 40-50MB with the Phone app running constantly and nothing else.

*You can select how to open the dock from springboard and lockscreen.
*You can also select how to cycle through already running apps (forwards or backwards) using gestures without reopening the dock.
*You can close apps within the dock.
*You can view the dock ANYWHERE (inside running apps).
*You can view badges (notification and backgrounder).
*The dock size seems locked but you can scroll through running apps much like Categories/Infiniboard/Infinidock but you only get one column.

One negative is that I don't see a setting to view the Springboard dock. So when you have this dock open, you can't select a docked Springboard app unless you have one running in the background.

All in all I think I will be using this and removing Kirikae. Even with themes for Kirikae this app looks a little better and has the same functionality (minus being able to utilize the springboard dock too). ProSwitcher (while cool) just takes too much memory for those of us on old hardware like iPhone 3G. I will have to use it a while to see if I notice a drastic change in my battery life. I only use these backgrounding apps sparingly though, power users might notice more of a battery drain than me.

Do I uninstall activator too? I think it installed with the Circuitous package, but I am not sure.

Activator is used in conjunction with other Cydia apps. You can set within Activator how you want to open certain apps that were designed to be compatible with it (using gestures, shake device, home button, status bar etc.). I know LastApp, LockInfo, LockInfo - InfoShade and Snappy use it.

the easiest thing to do is toggle apps on/off with SBSettings/more/Mobile Substrate Addons

Kirikae is a lot more stable than both ps and cicuitious or whatever. 6 apps open and 130 mb of ram left over yum

Cool. I will just leave it be then even though I don't have any of those apps.

What would be great is if SBSettings would act as an app launcher and then we could have 1 program to RULE THEM ALL!

Its already there - just open Processes and instead of tapping the "-" to close a program... just tap the program to switch to it. Simple easy to the point.

Wow, the free memory in circuitous is very good. Double tapping on the free memory numbers on the dock frees mem.

Free more than once and it frees quite a lot. I freed 2-3 times and my free mem went to 185MB, never before achieved via sbsettings free memory

Amazing app -- and free! No memory leak, very responsive, and with 1.1 some settings options -- don't know why anyone would stick with ProSwitcher now.

Best thing about Circuitous is that you can view the dock on your lockscreen and open directly to a running app. like phone favorites....saves a step or two. Very nice!!!
