  • Apple Stops Signing iPhone OS 3.1.2

Okay folks. We said it a few days ago. And we're going to say it again. It's quite clear that iPhone OS 3.1.3 is nothing but trouble. We saw a release of a new redsn0w that allowed 3.1.3 but it is NOT recommended. Even from the Dev Team. It's for experimental purposes only!

To top it all off, BigBoss is reporting that Apple has stopped signing the iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware, meaning that you can no longer use iTunes to install a custom firmware of 3.1.2. This also means that if your on 3.1.3 you cannot downgrade, but if you've been following along, you should know that already. YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE! If you've saved your SHSH's on Cydia or Rock, you may be in luck for downgrading, but its not guaranteed to even work.

Now from what I understand, even if you have not upgraded to 3.1.3, if you haven't saved your SHSH's with Cydia or Rock, if fails or something goes wrong with your phone causing you to need to restore, you will NOT be able to install your Custom 3.1.2 firmware. I reapeat, AS OF RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL STOCK FIRMWARE FOR 3.1.2 THROUGH ITUNES! No matter if your on 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 or lower.

This information seems to be highly aimed towards the new iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G. From the sounds of things, the iPhone 3G and 2G are in the clear. How that works, I have no idea, the information is very vague at this point.

If anyone can shed some light on how this works, and how iTunes can magically stop signing firmware (I was unware it even signed anything when installing custom firmware... if this is all the problem was, why didnt Apple do this a long time ago?), or maybe some motivated hacker will find a way to trick iTunes into signing a package that will let you install a custom firmware other than 3.1.3.

All in all, this appears to be a big attack by Apple on the Jailbreakers out there. Is this just the beginning of their crackdown on Jailbreaking? I sure hope not. Jailbreaking has brought their products to new levels. In my opinion they need to secretly let jailbreakers do their thing, as it really only benefits their products and store.

News of this comes from BigBoss, but I gotta say, there isn't much solid information there.

ok if we did the Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik) once before but have since updated iTunes, do I have to do it again?

If you have an issue restoring 3.1.2, it's a NAND issues with formatting. Just do the restore process again. This is explained on sauriks site.

You do not need to upgrade to 3.1.3 first, either.

iTunes does not touch the hosts file. If you upgrade iTunes and you've modded the hosts file as directed, you do not have to do it again.

Geez, everytime I think I'm figuring this out something comes up I have no clue about. I jailbroke with PwnageTool using custom ipsw file. I then unlocked with ultrasnow and am running 3.1.2 (7D11) with carrier 5.5 and baseband 04.26.08.

Somehow this is the first time I've read anything about SHSH blobs. Is this something I need to do, is too late for me to do or something I don't need to worry about.

Hoping the light bulb goes on one day

So I think the loss figure would be much higher than solely those who "need" the unlock. But I'm done ranting this to Apple. They just don't get it.
I agree.. I have att now but if I could not jailbreak anymore id be gone asap... Especially with the new android phone that will be like the htc hd2 except android instead of windows... I mean why not leave if you have a stock iphone and pay 100+ a month I mean i could go to sprint and pay 70 dollars for unlimited everything basically with that new plan where u can call any cell phone free.. Apple ur F***ing up!!

      I'm following Saurik's instructions and opening etc/hosts in a browser window, the file pops up, i open in it in text edit and it shows;

      ##
      # Host Database
      #
      # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
      # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.

When i add 74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com to the bottom and then try to save, it won't let me (probably a good thing as I'm probably wrong).
      I've checked read/write permissions and they're open!
Any help, even a link to another thread, would be appreciated.

      Ta.
I had to take ownership of the file. You can do this by right-clicking on the file, properties/ security, and give yourself permissions (you have to be on an admin account, I believe.

Or you can just get a tool like this: Add "Take Ownership" to Explorer Right-Click Menu in Win 7 or Vista - the How-To Geek

Only if you have SHSH files on Cydia. Someone posted a pic on how to check, it's on the first page when you open Cydia. You'll need to follow directions another member posted on page 2 I believe to trick iTunes into talking to Cydia's Server instead of Apple's so the firmware can be "Signed" by Cydia.

      Hope that helps.

      Edit:

OK...Here's the pic. Open up cydia and look at the top for this

Now, if you have an SHSH on file for 3.1.2 then follow the instructions cmdshft was nice enough to post for everyone

      Hope you understand now.

This is old news, since the 3.1 firmware apple has stopped signing earlier firmwares for iPhone 3GS...

I saved my SHSH's on file with cydia(when it was the time) just in case I have to restore my iPhone when a new firmware is out. I learned the hard way when I had to restore my 3.0 jailbroken iPhone that had crashed and couldn't go back to 3.0 and had to restore to 3.1. Thank god Geohot came with a jailbreak after.

After reading this thread I decided to post THE FACTS so people stop asking redundant questions....

      (1) This only affects the iPhone 3Gs and iPod Touch 3G & iPod Touch 2G with a Serial # starting with MC

      (2) Do NOT upgrade under any circumstances if you need an unlock. Wait for PwnageTool to create a custom FW without the baseband upgrade

      (3) If you are the owner of the 3 devices mentioned in (1) then please open Cydia and look at the top to see if you have SHSH's on file

Example (Thank hollow0 for providing the picture) You can thank him in this post

      (4) If you do have an SHSH on file with Cydia for 3.x.x and need to do a restore please follow instructions in this post by cmdshft and be sure to thank him.

      I hope this helps everyone

you can only restore from 3.1.2 if 3.1.3 has not been releced from apple
if iTunes ASKES you if you wood like to upgrade to 3.1.3 this upgrade WILL STOP YOU FROM RESTOREING TO 3.1.2 NO MATTER WHAT KEY YOU HOLD DOWN

      OK GUYS

This post is wrong on so many points, leaving aside the appalling spelling, grammar and shouting.

Upgrading to 3.13 has nothing to do with it, even if you have not updated to 3.13 you can no longer restore to 3.12 if you do not have your files stored on Cydia if you have one of the affected devices.

It has no relevance whatsoever to the 2G or 3G iPhones or all iPod Touch with a model number starting MB which can still be restored to whichever version they are on or downgraded - apart from the BB which, again is irrelevant to the 2G or Touches.

To make broad, sweeping statements as though they apply to all devices is misleading to put it mildly.
