  • Apple Stops Signing iPhone OS 3.1.2

Okay folks. We said it a few days ago. And we're going to say it again. It's quite clear that iPhone OS 3.1.3 is nothing but trouble. We saw a release of a new redsn0w that allowed 3.1.3 but it is NOT recommended. Even from the Dev Team. It's for experimental purposes only!

To top it all off, BigBoss is reporting that Apple has stopped signing the iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware, meaning that you can no longer use iTunes to install a custom firmware of 3.1.2. This also means that if your on 3.1.3 you cannot downgrade, but if you've been following along, you should know that already. YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE! If you've saved your SHSH's on Cydia or Rock, you may be in luck for downgrading, but its not guaranteed to even work.

Now from what I understand, even if you have not upgraded to 3.1.3, if you haven't saved your SHSH's with Cydia or Rock, if fails or something goes wrong with your phone causing you to need to restore, you will NOT be able to install your Custom 3.1.2 firmware. I reapeat, AS OF RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL STOCK FIRMWARE FOR 3.1.2 THROUGH ITUNES! No matter if your on 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 or lower.

This information seems to be highly aimed towards the new iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G. From the sounds of things, the iPhone 3G and 2G are in the clear. How that works, I have no idea, the information is very vague at this point.

If anyone can shed some light on how this works, and how iTunes can magically stop signing firmware (I was unware it even signed anything when installing custom firmware... if this is all the problem was, why didnt Apple do this a long time ago?), or maybe some motivated hacker will find a way to trick iTunes into signing a package that will let you install a custom firmware other than 3.1.3.

All in all, this appears to be a big attack by Apple on the Jailbreakers out there. Is this just the beginning of their crackdown on Jailbreaking? I sure hope not. Jailbreaking has brought their products to new levels. In my opinion they need to secretly let jailbreakers do their thing, as it really only benefits their products and store.

News of this comes from BigBoss, but I gotta say, there isn't much solid information there.

So .... i literally just got my 3gs yesterday. Since it's one of the "older ones" (week 38), it was running 3.1 out of box. I couldn't upgrade to 3.1.2 because of the signature issue and I don't currently have an SHSH blob on file since I only got it yesterday.

Is there any way I can get 3.1.2 on my device right now without the blob?

Also, my MMS isn't working out of box. Could it be due to the signature issue as well since I'm not on 3.1.2?

For MMS you'll need the AT&T carrier profile updated to at least 5.5 or 6.0. Once you plug your iPhone into iTunes it should let you know that there is an updated carrier profile for your phone. Just select yes to install and then restart your phone.

As for the firmware..if i were you i would not do anything to it and stay on it for as a long as you can unless you don't care about unlock and only want jailbreak. You can still jailbreak but it is not recommended.

And no there's no other way of getting the shsh blob on file unless you manually do it yourself which is very risky. You're for the most part out of luck :/ But like i said don't upgrade unless you have to or don't care for unlock.

If you had upgraded yesterday you could have Jailbroken and got your blobs on file but they stopped signing this morning so you're out of luck

you know.. i'd say about a good 15% of iphone users are people who jailbreak it and unlock it just for the purpose of using it on T-mobile, etc.
If apple stops jailbreaking, then they lost that 15% of people.
      Smart going apple...

So me and the wife are both jbed with 3.1.2 i was trying to figureout last night how to get my keys over to cydia because i dont think im on the server. So what your telling me know is if im not already on it i cant get on it until the jb 3.1.3. By the way it would be nice if some one could put up a screen shot to show what it looks like if your keys are signed by cydia.

Hopefully this helps. It's right above the "Welcome to Cydia" title.

Why? It does not affect 3G owners at all.

I'd have to say that even users who don't unlock need jailbreaking. The iPhone is just lame without it. No customizing, widgets, tweaks, etc. Many people who are on AT&T would not have the iPhone if it wasn't for jailreaking. So I think the loss figure would be much higher than solely those who "need" the unlock. But I'm done ranting this to Apple. They just don't get it.

      Thanks, Hollow.

The thing about my MMS is that i DID tell it to update my carrier profile and it appeared to do it, but still no MMS
I've rebooted and all that and no camera icon.

Any idea what the issue is? is it related to me being on an older firmware?

also, no worries, i will not be upgrading to anything higher than 3.1.2. i just know that 3.1.2 has a bug fix for exchange sync that i need.

that said, i read that if i use an older version of itunes, i can restore to an older firmware? is that so for the 3gs?

I'm leaving my 3G at 3.1. The next time it gets an upgrade it will be called a Nexus One. They've finally pushed me over the edge. I'm sick of trying to stay one step ahead with a crippled phone. Oh and Steve Jobs, it's not Google that's trying to destroy the iPhone, it's Apple.

I dont blame the guy for trying to make some money off of his product but this is starting to get a little ridiculous. Especially when alot of the new apps are coming from jb founded software ideas. Kind of retarded some of these apps should just be free. Kind of gets old, after every new firmware you feel like you have to rebuild your phone from the ground up with new jb apps.

You're welcome. lol i like how you said you'd make it rain and do a jig But yes it sucks and i'm worried too. Because last time Apple did this i was on 3.0 and my phone for some reason stopped working it just shut off and never powered back on so i had to go to the Apple store and i got a phone with 3.1 but luckily i didn't have one of the late models. So no tethered jailbreak. I've learned my lesson and added my files to Cydia. Hold your iPhones dearly people lol and protect them!

It shouldn't be because you are 3.1 because that is when MMS was enabled for the iPhone. All we had to do was update the carrier settings and it worked. Maybe a different version would be good for you. I can't remember the link but stealthbravo had a link for carrier 6.0. That is the one i'm currently using. And i don't think you can downgrade iTunes to restore the firmware. iTunes itself contacts a server to verify and once it sees that fw version it will not be approved. If i can find stealbravo's link i'll post it on here. It also, involves changing iTunes to allow carrier profile changes because Apple took that option out. I shall be back.

ok here's the link for the guide: Keep in mind it says 3.0 But you can still use the same process for 3.1
