  • Apple Stops Signing iPhone OS 3.1.2

Okay folks. We said it a few days ago. And we're going to say it again. It's quite clear that iPhone OS 3.1.3 is nothing but trouble. We saw a release of a new redsn0w that allowed 3.1.3 but it is NOT recommended. Even from the Dev Team. It's for experimental purposes only!

To top it all off, BigBoss is reporting that Apple has stopped signing the iPhone OS 3.1.2 firmware, meaning that you can no longer use iTunes to install a custom firmware of 3.1.2. This also means that if your on 3.1.3 you cannot downgrade, but if you've been following along, you should know that already. YOU CANNOT DOWNGRADE! If you've saved your SHSH's on Cydia or Rock, you may be in luck for downgrading, but its not guaranteed to even work.

Now from what I understand, even if you have not upgraded to 3.1.3, if you haven't saved your SHSH's with Cydia or Rock, if fails or something goes wrong with your phone causing you to need to restore, you will NOT be able to install your Custom 3.1.2 firmware. I reapeat, AS OF RIGHT NOW, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO INSTALL STOCK FIRMWARE FOR 3.1.2 THROUGH ITUNES! No matter if your on 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 or lower.

This information seems to be highly aimed towards the new iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G. From the sounds of things, the iPhone 3G and 2G are in the clear. How that works, I have no idea, the information is very vague at this point.

If anyone can shed some light on how this works, and how iTunes can magically stop signing firmware (I was unware it even signed anything when installing custom firmware... if this is all the problem was, why didnt Apple do this a long time ago?), or maybe some motivated hacker will find a way to trick iTunes into signing a package that will let you install a custom firmware other than 3.1.3.

All in all, this appears to be a big attack by Apple on the Jailbreakers out there. Is this just the beginning of their crackdown on Jailbreaking? I sure hope not. Jailbreaking has brought their products to new levels. In my opinion they need to secretly let jailbreakers do their thing, as it really only benefits their products and store.

News of this comes from BigBoss, but I gotta say, there isn't much solid information there.

      Firmware: 3.1.2
      Baseband: 05.11.07
      Jailbraked with: blackra1n

A couple of months ago, I've stored my SHSH in Saurik server with Cydia's "Make my life easier" stuff, and a couple of weeks before I received the message that my SHSH was stored.
Now, after trying to fix some installations problems with aptitude, I crashed my iPhone. After booting with blackra1n, it loops forever trying to start Springboard. I have SSH on USB access for 10 minutes and after that, the iPhone turns off. During these periods of 10 minutes, I tried a lot of things but I couldn't do anything to fix it. (If someone know how to fix this problem, PLEASE! let me know)

So, I guess that my ONLY solution is to restore it.

In order to do that, I followed the tutorials on how to restore 3.1.2 with SHSH stored in Saurik's server, changing the .....etchosts file with Saurik's server IP address, etc.... I tried to restore 3.1.2 but I couldn't. I get the "This device isn't eligible for the requested build" error, so I can't do the restoration.

I've been investigating at the Saurik's website. They recently changed the IP address from 74.208.105.171 to 74.208.10.249.
I explored both sites. 74.208.105.171 has an XML file (no SHSH files), and 74.208.10.249 root was yesterday:

      ../
      TTS/
      TTS_/
      (both subdirectories empty)

      but today it changed to:

      ../
      cydia/
      cydia-3.7/
      debs/
      dists/
      misc/
      paid/
      test/
      xmpl/

I can't see SHSH files there.
Does anybody know if the IP address of the SHSH caching server is still one of them? And besides that, how can I know if a particular SHSH (for example, mine...) is there?

      thank you very much
What firmware were the SHSH's stored on Saurik's server?

Do you mean that Saurik's server IP is wrong and that they may fix it... some day...?
About my cellphone line, a friend of mine gave my iPhone as a gift and it was locked to another country company. So I've no choice but unlock.

      area51crypto:

3.1.2 firmware the same one I'm trying to restore.

      Have you tried this:

      ok.
I've 3.1.2 (broken) and I want to restore to 3.1.2.
Nevertheless, I tried the tutorial you sent a couple of hours ago (several times and with different versions of Umbrella), but Umbrella doesn't work.

Not trying to be smart but I just want to know if we are on the same page!

First I have both PC and Mac! I have used both versions on Umbrella on the PC running Windows 7, I have not used the Mac version so I cannot comment on it!

I have used Umbrella to store my SHSH's on my computer just in case if I ever need to use and for some reason Saurik's server was down!

I have sucessfully saved 3.0,3.0.1,3.1.2, and 3.1.3 on my computer from Saurik's server so I know his server was working when I saved mine!

Only one thing I would like to ask you is that when you used Umbrella you put in your ECID then choose your firmware version and then where it says SHSH Repository did you choose Saurik Cydia from the drop down box!

Again I am not trying to piss you off just trying to see what the problem is!

PS: I just tried Umbrella and my ECID choose 3.1.2 firmware and Saurik Cydia server and it saved for me!

      Yes, I tried.
I just can't find my SHSH file on Cydia server. I tried today with AutoSHSH. I saved locally a "3.1.3" SHSH blobs (my firmware is 3.1.2 but TinyTSS said it loaded a 3.1.3 SHSH), used TinyTSS to publish locally my SHSH and iTunes verified the signature. But after a while, I got a "1600 unknown error".
I'm not sure if AutoSHSH extracted the correct SHSH from my 3.1.2 iPhone because it's designed for 3.1.3.
The fact is that I saved some months ago my SHSH on Saurik's server, and now I can't find it.
I'll take ProfessorJack advise and I will ask Saurik himself.

      Thank you!

Ok when you choose Make My Life Easier when you first open Cydia at sometime later whe you open Cydia you should have seen a screen like the attached one!

Question is what firmware did it say is had stored?

The reason is Apple quit signing firmware 3.1.2 sometime ago!

No matter what firmware you have on you Iphone the SHSH's saved on Saurik's Server would be the firmware being signed at the time!

For some time now and at this moment the only firmware being signe is 3.1.3!

Try running umbrella and choose firmware 3.1.3 and Saurik's Server and see if it works!

Probality what you have stored on Saurik's Server is 3.1.3

Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik) tells you everything you need to know.
Try it and see what error you get (if any).
Saurik has many millions of records on file and he can't answer all the messages he gets on Twitter.
If you requested your SHSH after Apple stopped signing 3.12 then you will only have your 3.13 SHSH on file.

Ok when you used Umbrella and put in your ECID and choose 3.1.2 firmware and choose Saurik's Server from the Dropdown arrow then choose Submit did the program indicate that the file was saved?

One other thing when I say choose Saurik's Server you are choosing it from the dropdown arrow on the right side where it says SHSH Repository?

Here is a screen pic of what I am talking about! You need to select Saurik-Cydia
