  • iPhone OS 4.0 Features Leaked. Update to Support Multitasking Apps.

Last week we talked about iPhone OS 4.0 on the verge of release. Today we talked the possibility of iPhone OS 4.0 being announced next week at the godly Apple event along with the supposed tablet mac. Today we get word from Boy Genius about some leaked iPhone OS 4.0 features, the most promising, in my mind, is the ability to multitask. BG also claims that features may include multi-touch support OS-wide, UI changes, and some new contact and calendar sync options.

    • There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
    • “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
    • Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
    • The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
    • The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.
We are all well aware of other smartphones having the ability to multitask. We are also aware of various options on the jailbreak front that provide the ability to multitask as well. So this feature isn't particularly a new idea, but nonetheless, I would love to have to have apple supported multitasking. Hopefully such ability will bring a plethora of options such as instant notifications from apps running that aren't on the screen, push notifications that still run while an app is open, etc.

However, I will also admit, that it's sad seeing some of these updates come to the iPhone after all the work that developers have put in to bring these features to use before Apple could wrap their head around it. As with the 3.0 update, I can see many apps being obsolete due to new features.

It's been rumored that iPhone OS 4.0 would also be what they use to run the tablet, but dear god, I hope that's not the case. I might have to cry a little bit. I for one, don't want a super-sized iPhone.

Of course, with the trends Apple has recently been following, Boy Genius says that the update won't be available to first generation users. This I can believe as Apple seems to have finally stopped committing to supporting all their products. Nonetheless, I for one am excited for next week. How about you?

Would be good, so now i wouldnt have to jailbreak to run many apps. One thing i am looking for is the ability to Reply to SMS Messages without leaving another app. Such as QuickReply for SMS, does for JailBroken iPhones. This is probably the main reason i Jailbreak, so i dont have to close an app and restart it just to reply to a message.

That picture is totally fake, go to this web page on your iphone, view that picture in a new tab, and zoom in and you can see the edited boxes around all the numbers on the right side of the screen. plus if you save it and view it in the camera roll it doesnt quit match up with the screen like a normal screenshot should.

We know it is fake, Boy Genius said he made it for the article. Read through the thread and you would have known that already....

I'm not ready to turn my back on my original

They already screwed my iMac G4 over with Snow Leopard. Damn you Apple, these products are capable!

Couple of words.......Springboard widgets, User Springboard Wallpaper, and Springboard Speed dial. All available via jailbreak but would love Apple approved OS integration... I can keep wishing right...

Without jailbreak, I know I would not have the iPhone anymore and im sure a lot of you here wouldn't either.

      With that, bring on 4.0!!!!
Why do you find it strange? The jailbreaking community is the perfect litmus test for integrating new features into the iPhone. Thousands and thousands of users working out the bugs without Apple having to hear about the incompatibilities and quirks. Without us it would have taken them longer to have the firmwares they have today.

Hopefully 4.0 has all features that make jailbreaking worthwhile so there would be no need to jailbreak.

Soo I have new iboot 3gs so I can't full jailbreak. I can't wait for 4.0 because I miss my backgrounder. I hope they add the ability to respond to text within other apps. I seriously doubt I'll jailbreak if 4.0 is as good as it's being hyped. Can't wait

im pretty sure apple knows how to produce all of this without the help of these sidejob developers in cydia...were talking about apple here. im sure what they develope doesnt reflect anything produced in cydia. apple knows what we want in the phone. there using strategy to keep us on the hook. duh

A stable GUI overhaul is about the only thing that could really make 4.0 worth using over jailbroken 3.1. The rest is pretty much all old news in the JB world. Gotta wait (impatiently) for the 4.0 Jailbreak I guess...

The reason that won't work is because the applications on the 3GS are compiled for armv7, and the 3G is an armv6. If they were compiled for the same target, it would be simple to copy the voice control stuff over.

yeah, I Agree, i've been thinking the same for a while now. but im still excited to see what apple can do with the new GUI, since after all, they are the ones who made the original, and if jailbreakers can make cool themes and GUIs, then i reckon apple can do better.

reply to devin_deville : yeah obvioous, but everyone can do that just ssh into your iphone and change the preferences info.plist to say whatever version you want.

yeah its obvious, but you can just ssh into your iphone and make it say 4.0 (2b11) or whatever. i did it on 3.0 in a youtube video before 3.1.2 jailbreak was available.
