  • Longitude Keeps You Connected to Google Latitude: RealTime GPS Tracking

    What is Google Latitude?
Google Latitude is a location-aware mobile app currently available as a WebApp only. A Mobile Phone user can use Google Latitude to allow specific people access to their current location via Google Maps. Privacy controls are available for the users to select whether contacts can see their exact location, enter an address manually, or turn it off all together. In order to use this service, a user must load the webapp every time they want to update their location via Safari or another mobile based browser.

What Does Longitude Do and Why Should I Use It?
Longitude is an App developed by Technivations, designed to work along side Google Latitude, that provides a more logical way of using Google Latitude. Longitude provides the ability to automatically update Google Latitude with your iPhone's location on a set interval. Your Google information is sent securely, and will NOT be sent to any third party servers. The program runs in the background, so as usual, this app is only available to Jailbroken users.

This feature is only available with Longitude. Currently in order for Google Latitude to update your location, you need to remember to open Safari, pop in the address, wait for it to connect and update, etc. This tweak offers a solution provided nowhere else. Just make sure you don't invite anyone to view your location that you don't really want to know where you are!

    Features include:
    - Auto Update your location via GPS to Google Lattitude
    - Share your location with friends via Lattitude
    - Find your iPhone if it gets lost!
    - Login securely using Google Account info
The app is available for $1.99 on the RockApp Store

UPDATE: Will be released on Cydia sometime next week.

Yes, I'm aware. It was quite obvious. I can't say I'd recommend installing Rock and Cydia on a phone at the same time anyways. They just don't play well together.

Ugh, wading through several pages of Rock vs. Cydia stuff to read about the initial purpose of this thread is irritating.

Anyhow, great job on this app. I've been waiting for something like this for quite some time and at $2, I'm more than happy to purchase it. However, I am seeing a huge drain on the battery of both my 3Gs and my wife's 3G after running it. I've cut back the updates to 30 minutes but it's still draining the battery on both phones about twice as fast as I've experienced before the install. Do you have any suggestions on anything to check on the phones to improve battery life running this app?

      TIA

We're doing extensive testing to determine battery usage and researching improvements we can make. Thanks for your input

Yes; very nice app indeed. The only issue that I have encountered is that it works just fine on my phone, but it does not work at all on my wife's phone. The test for log in credentials comes back okay, it just won't update at all...

And, +1 to bring it to the Cydia store.

Same thing was happening to me. Just uninstall and re-install. Should work like a champ after.

Any word on when this will be on Cydia? I really don't want to uninstall Cydia to try this out via RYI (I wouldn't even know how to uninstall Cydia). I think this Rock vs Cydia stuff is awful. I have no recent experience with Rock, just a terrible one a while back. So I wouldn't mind giving Rock another chance. But if it is true that it's either Rock or Cydia, I'm afraid that Rock will not make it onto my device. Can Rock try and make itself compatible with Cydia?

I can second the battery drain. Even when I disable location updates, it feels like the battery is draining much faster then before I installed the app. Other then that though, it does its job and it does it well. I hope that a future update tackles two things:

      1: Better battery performance
2: SBSettings toggle so I can enable/disable updates without having to open the app.

I'm not sure on the battery drain, but would def love the SBSettings toggle too!

Question: do you have to keep the app running in the background for it to update at the set intervals? Or can I just close it after I've set everything up?

Yes, it has to stay running in the background in order for it to update.

You don't have to do anything. This is a built in function of the app. Hence why it can only be run on jailbroken phones.

Okay. I got it working. I was wondering if I needed to use "backgrounder" to keep it running, but I figured it out. I just needed to delete and reinstall. Now it's working great.

      Thanks.

A couple of us had to do that myself included.

Where did the dev go? Lots of posts and tweets in the first couple of days after release, then a brief mention of an impending update (along with a review of multiple reports of battery problems), then utter silence for a week. Surely there was time for a quick update while standing in line for Avatar, right?

sorry. we found a couple other bugs that needed to be fixed, as well as the need for a licensing library so that it can be posted on the Cydia Store. we're currently in the testing phase and will release shortly. thanks for your patience.

No prob; thanks for the quick turnaround. Hope the update will come in a no-Rock flavor, too.
